Chapter 71: The Bloody Conquest of Bell Blooms

Chapter 71: The Bloody Conquest of Bell Blooms

Xion glanced at the tender green sprouts lining the path to the high ground. The screen lit up, displaying names, types, ages, and other basic details about the entities.

The upgrade certainly had its perks. He no longer needed to climb to the other side of the mountain to see what was there. He could simply scroll through the map and voilà! Everything was right before his eyes.

With a small smirk, he headed to the left. His destination was the ancient Withania somnifera. A very rare herb that could only be found at some particular places.

In this world, it was generally known as Bell Blooms due to its delicate yellow flowers, which hung like tiny bells. However, not many people knew about it.

In his previous modern world, it was renowned for its ability to reduce stress. It also possessed properties that enhanced vitality, mental clarity, and spiritual power.

But in this world, it had another use, one Xion would have never known if not for the books he had obtained from the system.

It could be used to regulate mana flow!

Would that not be a wonderful thing? If he could stabilize Rael’s mana, then he would no longer have to worry about it going awry and causing him further harm.

Imagining the possibilities, Xion ventured deeper into the woods. He could hear the many different kinds of noises, the chirping, rattling, slithering, and even distant roars.

But all of the dangerous animals were far from his location. So, without any worry, he boldly took in the sight.

"Brother, Noxian, I’m looking for a specific plant. Can you help me find it?"

It would be strange if he went straight to pick the herb without searching first, and besides, three pairs of eyes were better than one.

Hence, Xion asked, and to his satisfaction, both nodded in agreement.

"Okay, this is what the plant looks like." Xion picked up a twig and began drawing on the ground.

"It has oval, dark green leaves. Keep in mind that the leaves are covered in fine hairs," he added, smoothly moving the twig like a painter’s brush.

He had been drawing diagrams for years and now his drawing skills had indeed improved a lot.

Despite it being drawn on uneven ground, it was clean enough for the duo to see the details. The tiny segments like the shape of the flower, or the thick, fleshy root.

"The fruit is red when mature, and it’s enclosed in a..." Xion paused, trying to find the right words. "Paper-like casing."

It was the best comparison he could think of. "It kind of looks like a lantern. Got it?"

He looked up, hoping that if his description was lacking, the drawing would at least make up for it for Allen and Noxian.

"I will make sure to find it as soon as possible," Allen bowed slightly.

A little habit of alchemist whenever he tried to show his respect.

Noxian, not to be outdone, puffed his chest and declared, "I will bring it to you faster!"

The child grinned sweetly, and Xion felt his fatherly love overflow. "Okay then, if baby does that, I’ll give baby a present. How about it?"

He raised a brow in question, watching as Noxian eagerly bobbed his head with all his might.

Really cute...

Xion was brought back to his senses when Allen coughed lightly. "How about including me?"

If Xion hadn’t been standing so close, he might have missed it entirely. In fact, for a moment, he thought he had misheard.

But the serious expression on the alchemist’s face, paired with the faint redness creeping up his ears beneath his brown hair, told him otherwise.

This grown man, taller than even Ray, was actually competing with a ten-year-old for a favor. How amusing.

Xion tried to suppress both his smile and the urge to tease Allen.

However, his prolonged silence only made the two gazes fixed on him, one a striking sunset orange, the other a deep, brooding purple, even more intense.

"Yeah, sure." Xion chuckled lightly, his words making Allen’s lips twitch ever so slightly.

Was he trying to smile? Or maybe not. Xion could not quite tell.

One thing he did know, however, was that he had truly gotten lucky when he joined Rael’s entourage.

Where else would he have met such amazing people?

Noxian was very familiar with plants. Allen, being the alchemist, was even more so. Ironically, it was Xion, the least knowledgeable of them all, who found the rarest plants first.

Although it was not the Bell Blooms he was looking for, the dark reddish roots had different uses.

A system notification chimed in his mind. The more he gained, the more excited he became.

"I will look over there," he pointed the direction to both Allen and Noxian. It would do no good if he lost himself in the middle of the forest. At least now, Allen would know where to find him.

"Don’t go too far." Allen reminded while inspecting a small snake climbing on the tall tree.

Taking a cautious step forward, Xion pushed the vines aside, the leaves rustling faintly as they shifted. The vines were so thick that he couldn’t help but wonder if they were truly vines at all.

The thick curtain of greenery cast the area into an eerie darkness, making it feel as though he had stepped from daylight into an unnatural night.

Only the flickering golden light filtering through the cracks between the towering trees allowed him to make out his surroundings, providing just enough visibility to navigate through the dense foliage.

The surroundings somehow felt heavy. The ground was softer, the air seemed funny and even the silence felt weirdly loud.

It was not until he went deeper that he finally noticed what was wrong. It was too silent. There was no chirping, no distant howls.

His feet sank into the soft ground once again. Something broke under his feet and in an instant, a heavy metallic stench rushed to his senses.

He shuddered as the sickening realization dawned on him. Beneath him lay a carpet of bodies. Twisted, and torn flesh was scattered all over the ground. The red painted the soil, and now even his shoes.

He silently covered his mouth as the rusty iron got heavier in the air. Something clawed at his throat, and Xion knew he had to run away.

Just as he was about to turn around, he felt a vague shadow twisting far away. A low growl echoed, forcing his heart to beat faster. His legs trembled as the fear crept up his spine.

Xion directly sank to the ground. He discovered another fact about the Map setting. It did not show the presence of Orcs!
