Chapter 313: Welcome to My Land
Chapter 313: Welcome to My Land
A small glass emerged in Xion’s hand. Without hesitation, he raised it to his lips and gulped it down.
Warmth exploded in his chest, slowly traveling to his nearly frozen limbs. Even the trembling in his legs ceased.
His heart, which had been fluttering like a caged bird, steadied into a regular rhythm.
He drew a long, slow breath, feeling the oxygen fill his lungs to the brim.
Then, in full view of the congregation, he pulled back the hood from his head.
From each corner of the hall, heavy gasps erupted, like cracks splitting through ice.
And like a predator spotting prey, Talia’s golden eyes lit up the moment she saw him.
Then came that familiar smile—radiant, and yet poisonous.
With an elegant wave of her hand, she gestured toward the guards. "Bring him forward."
Before the guards could even move a step, Xion waved his hand in the air, dismissing them as one would to the lowly servant.
The guards halted. No matter how courageous they were when dealing with ordinary people, they didn’t dare to touch His Grace’s person.
As for why someone who should have been celebrating his wedding night, was standing with the sinners, they could only look to Talia for guidance.
Xion glimpsed at the slight crack in Talia’s expression and the corner of his lips raised higher. He began walking calmly toward the statue.
While he passed the stunned faces of the assembly, they instinctively parted to let him through.
The moment Talia’s golden eyes flicked down to his feet, the smile vanished completely from her face.
How? How was he walking?
She had confirmed the effects of the poison herself. She had also felt it settle into Xion’s veins at the inn.
That dose should have kept him paralyzed for days if not for hours at the least. But even then he wouldn’t be able to stand on his own.
So, how?
Unless... he had healed himself. Was he truly that gifted?
Instead of anger or hate, sheer excitement bloomed in her chest. If he was powerful enough to resist that kind of toxins, then... her dream—no, her divine purpose—might still be within reach!
Ah, it truly was the wisest decision to use Xion as a sacrifice!
As if oblivious to the whispers, Xion stepped onto the podium. Then, under the watchful eyes of the onlookers, he hopped on the altar and sat there facing the crowd.
With his feet dangling in the air, he waved at the crowd with a sweet smile on his face. "Hello there. Welcome to ... my land. I expect to give you all the freedom you wished for."
His gentle voice, like a stream of clear water, softly swished into the ears of the people. As if some magic had been broken, the haziness in their eyes vanished.
It took them barely a few seconds to come to their senses. Wait did they hear it right? This person said ’my land’, right?
The realization hit them and in an instant, they all bowed to him in unison. "Long live the lord! Long live the lord!"
Even guards couldn’t resist bowing down.
Amidst all the noise, Her Holiness was staring at the young man in front of her.
Suddenly her flat lips twitched upward, and she laughed. "Oh, my goodness. Your Grace," she emphasized the title as she continued, "you need to cleanse your soul first before you can grant them their... freedom."
Those impossibly blue eyes widened in bewilderment. "What is my sin, though? How come I don’t recall doing anything bad?"
Civilians, who had just watched an old man bleed out without flinching, were now glancing at each other with clear confusion and uneasiness.
Their eyes flicked back to the lifeless body recalling how mercilessly the guard had shoved the corpse down the altar.
Just moments ago, they truly believed he deserved death. After all, he was only saying that it was his son he had saved and not the confession that ’he shouldn’t have done that’.
But now... didn’t they understand? Wouldn’t they have done the same?
One mother clasped her hands tightly in her lap.
Was it truly a sin... to protect your own child?
Fear gripped them all.
That was exactly what Xion was waiting for. The spell had started cracking.
After recalling their every encounter, Xion realized it. Talia’s magic, or whatever it was, didn’t seem to have much effect on him.
When he was kidnapped, Talia had cast a spell to force the truth out of him. At first, it had worked perfectly.
But when she asked if he could read ’Twinkle twinkle little star’ from the holy paper, he had easily managed to lie.
This time it was still the same. He too was affected by the spell. The fear in his heart had made his legs numb, and his brain seemed to stop working too.
However, now wasn’t the same. It was as if the invisible strings that were binding him had shattered, leaving him free to move on his own accord.
Although he had no clue how or why this was happening, as long as he could bring these people to their senses, he was glad.
And he was even more delighted when he thought about the next plan.
Talia had called him a sinner, right? Then he should first remove that dirt from his name.
"The holy book says, the sin of a sinner should not be borne by the innocent. If someone is guilty... then they, and they alone, must bear the weight of it."
Talia’s lips pressed into a hard line.
"So why should these innocent people bear the harm? Ain’t that a sin too? Your Ho-li-ness." The more Xion dragged his words, the more his lips turned upward.
Talia wasn’t even trying to maintain her smile anymore.
With a storm raging in her eyes, she lifted her chin haughtily, "You harbor the intent to nurture the Devil. That is sin enough."
The word Devil rippled through the crowd like thunder. In an instant, the onlookers, who were looking at Xion with starry eyes, changed their expressions.
That one line was all it took for their fear to shift again.
Xion... laughed. Not a harsh bark or a deranged cackle, but a bright, amused giggle, that sounded light and almost innocent.
So, this is how she was doing it!
[Host! Can you tell me too? Why are you keeping me in suspense?!] The poor system complained, but ultimately, it was ignored.
Xion was busy staring at the slight shift in Talia’s demeanor. Interesting. Really, interesting...
