Chapter 65: His...Mate?

"Last I remember, you used to be quite into me, Evelyn. Makes me wonder if it’s no longer the case."

"Valerio, that was in the past, and I don’t think you should be—"

"I wouldn’t say no," Valerio cut her off, stepping into her space until he could whisper. "I’m at the top of the world now, completely worthy of you. I wouldn’t say no, sweetheart."

Eyes fell on her so dreamily, she almost wanted to step back. "I know that I completely rejected you back then even though I knew you were into me. But the thing is...I wasn’t where I wanted to be then. I wasn’t good enough for you. Now though, I am. And that’s why I took this opportunity to come. So...what do you say? Would you give me a chance?"

What the...

How does he randomly come to this event just to drop this sort of bomb and ask her this...?

Does he think she was waiting on him all this time?

After how he’d shut her down? Did he have any idea how humiliating she’d felt back then, even locking herself up in her own room until her father had to drag her out himself? He’d told her that he wasn’t into her and that she wasn’t...his type.

So what the hell was all this crap now?

Evelyn shoved suddenly at his chest, breaking off the dance and stepping back a bit. "Don’t do that, please. We’re at a public event. I don’t want scandals."

"Scandals?" He smirked. "Like what? Being seen with Valerio Barcini? Or is it me asking you out? C’mon Evelyn, this is what you’ve always wanted. You and I."

"Valerio—"

"I’ve always been what you want, Evelyn," his voice was barely audible, enough that only she could hear.

But was she really the only one hearing?

"I know you still love me. I know you want me, because if you don’t, why are you still the same?"

"M-meaning what?"

"Have you been able to love any other man except me?" he asked. "I’ve always been on your mind. Me and me alone, Evelyn and here I am for you, I don’t—"

"Stop it," Evelyn interrupted him, hands balled by her side.

She bit out, "If this is why you’re here, leave. I don’t have time for this and I don’t want you hovering around me just to say stuff like that. You don’t know anything about me, so please, a little bit of decency would be nice."

"I see." Valerio cocked his brow in scrutinization for a moment. He stepped closer and closer until he could stand in her space, saying, "Then tell me you don’t love me anymore."

"Valerio, stop it. People are looking."

"That you no longer love..."

A shadow loomed over Evelyn, causing his words to trail off. He creased his brow.

Evelyn quickly turned around to bump into Zayne who’d lowered his gaze to her, that strange intoxicating scent that always came from him filling the room. "Zayne. This, it’s not—"

His hand came suddenly at the back of her head, keeping her steady. He was staring at Valerio like a wolf hunting, fingers curling into her hair.

"Zayne—"

He leaned in fast, their lips crashed together, forcing her to swallow the rest of her words.

Heat erupted in the pit of Evelyn’s stomach and she went still, any will to resist melting as quickly as it came.

What the...

But she kissed him back. How could she not, when he drew her mad with the taste of him?

There was a demand in the way their mouths moved against each other. And it felt as if the longer they kissed, the more potent that scent of his seemed to grow.

Zayne growled deep in her mouth like a man starved, biting down on her lip. And it only made her shudder, heart skipping a quick beat.

A pant slipped from his lips as a quiet moan fell from hers. The sound around them faded into nothing as she stared up at him with her neck craned, throat working in a rapid swallow.

Her chest was rising and falling in a quick rhythm, but she couldn’t utter a word, stuck on him. Not even realizing how quiet the entire hall had gone.

Everyone was gaping and that did not exclude Brandon, Lyra, and Preston.

Caesar and Adeline were gazing with their jaws dropped. Adeline mumbled, "What an interesting event..."

"I told you it would be interesting. Roman is not going to believe this," Caesar responded with a chuckle.

She nudged his shoulder, deliberately stepping on his foot. "Stop being such a gossip."

"Ouch," he hissed, smiling.

Alessio on the other hand was standing next to his brother, Dario, staring as well. He muttered, "Whoa..."

"Who’s that human?" Dario asked.

"His...mate," Alessio responded.

"A human?" Dario carved a brow. "What the heck?"

Alessio didn’t respond. No, something else had caught his attention. It was the woman standing next to them. Siena, Zayne’s personal doctor. She’d insisted on coming, and he’d had no problem bringing her along.

Zayne hadn’t seemed to mind either when he saw her earlier at the event.

But now...she stood beside him, biting down rapidly on her fingernails. She held this angry look on her face, glaring towards Evelyn whom Zayne was of course devouring in the name of a kiss.

"Siena."

No response.

"Siena!" he nudged her.

Snarling, Siena shot her gaze over to him, leveling him with a murderous look. "What?!"

"What is going on with you? Why are you—-"

"Leave me alone." She stormed off, shoulders bouncing in suffocating rhythm.

Alessio shook his head incredulously. "You’ve got to be kidding me. Everyone’s gone mad."

Meanwhile, Valerio, who was in the face of all these, blinked, unable to move, unsure what to say or what to even do. He was just dumbfounded, having no power but to watch this scenario unfold before him.

What the hell was he playing at?

"Zayne Mancini..." he uttered.
