Betrothed To An Alpha? I Don't Think So!
Chapter 41: The Dark Hair, The Green Eyes

Chapter 41: The Dark Hair, The Green Eyes

Zayne sat, settled into his office leather chair. His legs were crossed, head thrown back as he listened to his brother.

"What happened to your hand?" Alessio asked.

"This?" Zayne glanced at the red on his hand. "Ah. She bit me."

Alessio blinked. "Huh...?" What sort of weird relationship did these two have?

His face constricted, but he shook his head, diverting the conversation. "Concerning that number you gave me, I was able to trace it. And although I’m not a hundred percent sure, I think I also sort of figured out who Valerio is. The man you’re looking for."

That made Zayne pause and he lifted his gaze to his brother, expecting more.

Alessio moved closer, pulling out the opposite chair to sit down. "Apparently there is a man who worked with Sage Darkwood before you even did. The name should ring a bell."

"Who?" Zayne scowled.

"Who is the only man you know who goes by the name Valerio?"

He narrowed his eyes, pondering, to recall. Has he ever met such a man? He didn’t think so. If he had, he would’ve remembered the very second he heard the name fall from Evelyn’s mouth.

Alessio rolled his eyes, proceeding to explain himself, "Valerio Lucchesi! Don’t you know him?"

The expressions on Zayne’s face vanished and he straightened up in his seat.

"Lucchesi?" he asked. "What does Lucchesi have to do with Evelyn?"

Alessio said, "I don’t know. I don’t even know if he’s the right Valerio we’re looking for, but it has to be him. Why? Valerio worked with Sage Darkwood a lot. Your mate must’ve known him and could have possibly fallen in love with him or something. But maybe it didn’t work out and now..."

The rest of his words died in his throat at the look on Zayne’s face. He held no expression actually, but Alessio knew him too well. Whenever he went blank and cold like that, he was internally losing it—

The fountain pen Zayne held broke in two, jolting him.

"Whoa...Zayne." He chuckled cautiously. "Valerio Lucchesi is not here right now, you know. So if you could...calm down, that would be really nice. I only did what you asked me to. Found the man you wanted."

Zayne smiled dryly at him, keeping the fountain pen aside. He picked out his pocket handkerchief and proceeded to wipe off the ink that was spreading. "Where is he now?"

"Huh?"

"Valerio Lucchesi."

"Oh, from what I gathered, he hasn’t been in Italy for a year now. He’s shifting his business out of Italy."

"Ah." Zayne nodded. "I see. He’s a lucky man."

Alessio blinked, eyes thinned with suspicion. "Zayne, what do you mean by ’he’s a lucky man’?"

The man shrugged and tossed aside the stained clothing. "What about the number you traced? Did you find out who was trying to contact her?"

Alessio eyed him for a long while. But he nodded, answering, "I did."

"And?"

"There is something very strange."

"How do you mean?" Zayne lifted a brow.

Alessio shifted closer. "Lincoln in the Darkwood family is the same Lincoln we know, right?"

"Yes. Why?"

"What is his relationship with Evelyn? I need to make sure I’m not wrong."

A crease formed between Zayne’s brows. "Why are you asking these questions?"

"Just tell me."

"Lincoln stands with Preston. You can guess the rest."

"This is weird," Alessio muttered. "I don’t get it."

"What are you talking about?"

It took a few seconds of pondering, but he said, "When I traced the number, the owner was...Lincoln Darkwood."

"What?"

"Yes. All the information I found on that number belonged to Lincoln. And that’s what I don’t understand. If the relationship between those two is strained, why would he call her phone?"

Zayne frowned.

And the more he thought, the deeper his frown grew.

"What did he say when he called her?" Alessio asked.

"Nothing."

"Huh?"

"Nothing at all." Zayne shook his head. "She said he didn’t say a word after she answered."

"Why did he call her then?"

"I’m not...sure."

Alessio leaned back against his seat, arms folded. They were both silent for a long while before he hissed. "Honestly, I’ve been wondering something whenever I see Lincoln."

"What do you mean?" Zayne probed.

"Don’t you think it’s odd?" Alessio asked.

"What’s odd?"

"The resemblance between the two?" The man shrugged. "Of course, I’m not saying your mate looks exactly like him, but you realize she looks more like Lincoln than she does Sage."

"Alessio—"

"Oh common. Look at them." Alessio pointed out, "The green eyes. Doesn’t it tell you something?"

"Alessio, people can sometimes inherit things from their relatives. It’s not always the parents."

"I know that. But this makes sense, doesn’t it? What if—"

"Are you crazy?"

"It’s not entirely out of the question."

Zayne smoothed his hair back, brows crinkling. "Are you trying to say that Lincoln could be Evelyn’s father?"

"I’ve always wondered whenever I saw him and her." Alessio gave a careless roll of his shoulder. "Evelyn looks nothing like Sage. Preston, Lyra, and Brandon have a bit of resemblance to that man, here and there. Like Lyra who has his blonde hair, Brandon with his gray eyes, and of course Preston who has his face. Evelyn on the other hand...nothing. Her hair is black and her eyes are green, just like Lincoln’s. If I’m correct, her mother was blonde. So..."

"You think her mother had an affair?" Zayne pressed him with a look.

"I don’t know."

Alessio shook his head.

"I just think... You know what? Never mind. This is none of my business."

"Alessio!—"

"Zayne, if you want to find out, go ahead, she’s your mate," Alessio said, pausing. "As for me, this is none of my business. I’m not getting involved in the Darkwood’s drama, not unless it’s necessary. I’ve got to head to your house for the security check."

He opened the door and left, shutting it before Zayne could utter another word.

The man leaned against his office chair, craning his head back to stare at the ceiling.

Lincoln, Evelyn’s father?

That was impossible.

If he were, why would Sage give the corporation to Evelyn and not to his own kids? What man would do that? It’s not as if he loved Evelyn that much.

He loved her, that was for sure even if Evelyn may think otherwise, but Sage loved the others more.

Although, now, he wasn’t even so sure about that. Unless Alessio was completely wrong and Evelyn really is Sage Darkwood’s biological daughter.
