Betrothed To An Alpha? I Don't Think So!
Chapter 38: I’m Not Yours

Chapter 38: I’m Not Yours

Evelyn drew her head, taken aback. "Oh?"

Then she smiled dryly to herself, fingers coming up to drag through her hair. "Who cares...? Right. No one does. But do you know how many times I called, and you never answered? You didn’t tell me anything and just left. I was worried! Okay! Yes, I was concerned, because I had no idea where the hell you were and no matter how many times I called, no matter who I asked or how hard I tried to reach, I couldn’t figure out where you were or—"

"Worry about yourself first, Evelyn," Zayne said, breaking his silence. "You’re the one with a hit on your back, not me."

Her back stiffened. She stared, watching him pop open the buttons of his vest.

"Right. Yes, I am. I’m the one with a hit on my back, not you. And you want to know something?"

Zayne ran his fingers through his hair. He wouldn’t like what she was going to say next. She was angry and he hadn’t even meant to make her mad. Maybe he’d thought this was better than having to hear whatever she’d have to say about what he’d done at the company.

His stomach knotted regardless of his nonchalant approach to it. Bile burned the back of his throat and—

"Unlike you, I found a way to keep myself safe. To get the stupid hits off my back," she spat.

He twisted his head to look at her. "A way that you didn’t tell me about. You did all that and kept it from me. You put me in that will without even letting me know. Why? Didn’t trust me enough to tell me, is that it?"

"No, of course not." She scowled at him. "Why would that ever be the reason? I’ve never said that I didn’t trust you. None of that is the reason at—"

"If this helps you, then so be it. You can choose to keep to yourself, fine by me. Like I said—"

"Zayne!"

"—I’d protect you."

"You’d protect me? Really? You know, at this point, someone else might just do a better—"

He was in her face in the blink of an eye, so quick, Evelyn jolted, stepping back rapidly until her body hit the wall behind.

The man slammed both hands on either side of her head against the wall. There was a glare on his face, eyes a shade from blue to golden. "What did you just say?"

The anger in his tone. The vibration of his voice.

Evelyn’s pupils stayed dilated. She was unmoving, staring at him. "Your...eyes..."

"What did you just say, Evelyn?" he questioned again, snarling this time around. "Answer me!"

"What is wrong with you?"

"You think someone else will do a better job than me? You think you’d be safer with someone else? Valerio? Is that who?"

She went frozen, eyes growing wide. She swallowed. "How do you—"

"You think I’m a monster now, don’t you? That’s why you think whatever damned human you have can protect you better than I can."

"Zayne."

"What is he? Your lover?"

Her mouth fell apart. "What?"

The man scoffed and pulled away, turning to have his back on her. He rubbed his temple and went back to undoing his tie.

Evelyn stared at him. "How do you know...Valerio?"

No response.

"Zayne—" She grabbed his hand.

"Don’t." His eyes, back to their normal blue, were just as cold. "I don’t need you to tell me. I’d rather not hear it."

"You think he’s my lover?" Her tone grew dim, the look on her face changing. "What are you talking about? Do you even know who Valerio is?"

Zayne snapped his face dangerously close to hers, growling, "Tell me then? Who is he to you that you’d even speak his name in your sleep? Go ahead, Evelyn. Fucking tell me!"

"None of your business," she spat. "It’s none of your business who he is, Zayne."

"Of course it’s not." He laughed humorlessly at the ridiculousness of the situation. "Go ahead and find him then. Aren’t you just the damsel in distress?"

"Go to hell!" Evelyn grabbed the nearest book on the little shelf and it sailed across the room, slamming right into the back of his head.

He paused at the sting. Then he slowly turned to find her smaller frame blowing up and down in heavy furious breathing.

"My lover? Really?" Evelyn smiled crossly, seeming rather irritated. "So what if he is? What if he’s my lover? What business of yours is that?"

"It is my damn business."

"Because we’re living together?" She shook her head at him. "No. No, it’s none of your business and you don’t—"

Zayne took quick steps towards her until he was right in her face, body hunched and head tilted to the side. "Listen here, you little monster, I couldn’t care less about us living together. It is my business, because you’re my betrothed. You’re mine, and no one will ever have you. Ever."

She gazed at him with pure shock on her face. Then all of a sudden, she chuckled in disbelief, amused.

This time, she was the one who tramped into his space, cocking her head to the opposite of his, their eyes locked onto each other.

She said, "I’m not yours, Zayne and I will never be. You want to know why? Because like I told you, I will win this game, and when I do, I won’t even speak to you ever again." She grasped his collar, yanking him, her breath brushing against his face. "You can also leave this house for however long you please, see if I care. I wouldn’t even waste my precious time calling."

Her nose twitched, and she scrunched her expression. "You went to drink. That’s why you didn’t answer your phone. I can bet there were women all over you. After all, everyone tends to never be able to keep their eyes off you even at work. It must make you feel good, doesn’t it? Did you have fun?"

"Evelyn!" Zayne gritted her name with clenched teeth, proceeding to straighten up. She, however, pulled him down again, glaring daggers at him.
