Chapter 35: Kill Me

Evelyn rose to her feet. "In case you’ve forgotten, this is no longer a family matter at this point. Every decision here involves every single one of you and that does not exclude my Fiancé. In fact, his words hold more importance within this room than any of your words do."

"Now, I can see that a lot of you do not agree with this decision," she said. "Would you like to give me a reason? Just a single one."

They glanced at each other.

Lincoln pinched between his brows, drawing a deep breath.

Roman said, "If anyone should rightfully own TDG if anything were to happen to you, it should be Preston."

"Why?" she asked.

"Because he’s your family. Your brother—"

"And Zayne Mancini is my fiancé. What is your point?" She intently gazed at him. "It’s up to me to decide if I want to give the cooperation to my brother, but seeing as I have my fiancé whom I love, why would I choose my brother? Personally, I don’t think TDG will be in safe hands with him."

"Spare me that bullshit!" Preston took a shuddering furious breath, fuming. "You don’t think TDG will be in safe hands with me? What the hell do you mean by that? Do you realize I’ve been trained to run this corporation since I was what? Twelve? Thirteen? And you stand there, thinking you have the right to question credibility?"

"This is not me questioning your credibility, Preston," Evelyn said, half smiling. "I’m simply saying that I personally don’t think you’ll be good enough. Father seemed to have had the very same idea as I. Zayne Mancini is more than experienced, the most successful businessman as of currently. Don’t you think it’s a bit rude of you to think you have what it takes more than he does?"

She glanced around at everyone within the room. "Don’t you all think so? I mean, if anything possibly happens to me, do you really think Preston will be more capable of handling this corporation than Zayne Mancini?"

Not one of them could answer her.

Bradon shook his head. "I don’t accept this!"

"Me neither," Lyra refused. "You can’t do this!" She glared at Evelyn.

Evelyn said, "I knew this was going to happen, and I don’t mind. When I wrote the will in the first place, I wasn’t expecting any of you to accept it. Like I said before, I own more than fifty percent shares of this company, and the majority of my words carry weight. This decision benefits this company, after all, no one can predict death, right? Just like my father, I am prepared to have this place in order even in my death. And there is no one more fit than Zayne Mancini to succeed me if I do unfortunately die, though I doubt that would be happening anytime soon."

"This meeting is over." She bowed, straightening up with a smile on her face and leaving the meeting room with Amber.

Zayne roughly ran his fingers through his hair. He pinched between his brows and when he opened his shut eyes, there was something unreadable in them—glints akin to calm displeasure.

The man rattled his chair back and stood to his feet, tramping out of the room.

Preston glared at every single person within the room. He questioned, "You’re not going to support this bullshit, are you?"

"Of course not!’ Marcella spat with a frown. "This is unacceptable."

Roman and two others agreed with her. "Zayne Mancini? That can’t be."

"I understand he’s a great businessman, one we can’t compare to. Even Sage Darkwood held great respect for him. But still..."

"We can’t just accept this." Lyra shook her head.

Preston paced back and forth in the room. All of a sudden, he paused and stormed off towards the door.

He didn’t stop walking, halting only when he passed one of the employees working in the company. "Where is she?"

"Ye?" The worker was confused. "I’m not sure...what you mean, sir?"

"Where is my sister?"

"Oh, you mean the CEO." The woman smiled. "She’s in her office—"

"Shut your fucking trap!" he snapped so suddenly, she flinched, confused.

What had she done wrong?

Preston stalked off, a silent rage boiling in his eyes. When he arrived at the office, he didn’t even bother knocking, slamming the door open.

Evelyn lifted her head and Amber, whom she was talking to, turned, bemused.

"Get out," he demanded, glaring at Amber.

Amber looked at Evelyn.

Evelyn nodded in response, dismissing her.

"Will you be okay?" Amber asked.

She nodded at her. "I’ll be fine. Don’t worry about me."

Amber was a bit reluctant, but she did smile, turning around and leaving. When she passed by Preston, she narrowed her eyes into slits as if warning him.

Preston, however, couldn’t care about a threat from a nobody like her. He instead stormed towards the table, slamming his hands down on it. "What the fuck do you think you’re doing, Evelyn?"

"What are you talking about?" Evelyn asked with a straight face. "Elaborate if you will. If not, please step out, I have a stack of papers to go through and sign."

Preston laughed. "A will? Really?"

"Yes. Do you have a problem with it?"

"What exactly do you think you’re playing at?"

Evelyn stepped out from behind the desk, her heels loud against the marble tiles. She sat at the edge of the desk, arms folded.

"Preston, you know, you have a lot to say for someone who uses underhanded means to take what is mine from me. I didn’t ask our father to give this corporation to me. He wanted to, and you’re attacking me for what?"

She shook her head. "Will you really be happy if you manage to kill me?"

"You—"

"Do you really think that you can just kill me and get this company?" she asked, amused. "Preston, you’re not as smart as you think. You placed a hit on me and thought I wouldn’t fight back? That I’ll just let you kill me?"

She stood to her feet. "Go ahead then, kill me."
