Betrothed To An Alpha? I Don't Think So!
Chapter 20: I’m Scared…

Chapter 20: I’m Scared...

The bullet pierced through the air at lightning speed towards Evelyn who’d just scoffed, reaching for the phone inside her pocket.

"What now? So he’s mad at me?"

The phone slipped off to the floor and the very second she bent to pick it up, the bullet slammed through the window, lodging into the wall on the other side.

It was loud, so much, that she froze where she bent, body trembling rapidly.

"What...wh-what was..."

She forced her head to the side, only to fall on her butt on instinct, crawling back frantically, while a series of other bullets poured in, lodging into the wall and only missing her by a small mark.

The windows were completely shattered.

Whoever was doing this wanted to kill her at all costs.

"ZAYNE! ZAYNE!"

Evelyn didn’t stall, getting up and running while crotched to get to the elevator. Zayne was downstairs, and if she could get there fast enou—

"Evelyn!"

Of course, he had heard the gunshot and he’d been up to the second floor as quick as he could.

Marcus reloaded the rifle.

"Are you kidding me?" he snapped, biting in frustration. "What is she? A cat with nine lives?"

How could someone be this lucky?

He aimed through the scope, cursing under his breath at Zayne Mancini. While he believed none of the crap that his boss had said, he honestly wanted to finish this job without Mancini’s involvement.

But now, he’d missed his target many times, giving him a chance to head to the second floor.

He’d been here since morning, waiting for an opportunity. The problem was that this girl stuck to Mancini like gum. Everywhere he was, you’d see her.

Now he’d been made to seem like some nonsense amateur sniper.

But who cares that Zayne Mancini is there? As the boss said, his only target was the girl.

Marcus aimed one more time, pulling the trigger. But right before his eyes, he’d seen Mancini move, so quickly his figure was almost a blur, grabbing the girl and getting her across the hall into one of the rooms.

He said some words to her—ones he couldn’t make out then shut the door.

Marcus furrowed his brow.

He watched Zayne walk right back to the first window where he’d made his shot. He stood as still as a statue, hands balled into fists, and he wondered, what in the world he was doing.

Zayne bent and picked up one of the broken glass. He looked up, eyes directly meeting him.

Marcus jumped back before his brain could even register the situation. He staggered backward, chest pounding like it’d never done before. He was hyperventilating—couldn’t breathe properly.

"What the fuck? What the fuck? What the fuck?"

His throat worked in a thick swallow. Maybe this was all in his head, yeah? After all, his boss had filled him with this crap.

Marcus crawled back to the sniper and the second he looked through, all he saw was the bright blue of his eyes and then, Zayne threw the piece of glass.

It wheezed through the air, fast and sharp.

Marcus’s body froze. All he felt right after was the glass grazing his face, enough to make him bleed, but not enough to cause serious harm. It was almost...deliberate.

He knew he was here.

Zayne Mancini could directly see him all the way up here.

Marcus flickered his eyes, short for words. He began laughing hysterically, falling back to the floor with his gaze fixed on the gloomy sky.

"You’re not crazy, boss..." He cackled as if he were losing his mind. "Zayne Mancini is a monster. He’s anything but human!"

.....

Evelyn paced back and forth in the living room, chest-thumping. Her breath was loud and quick, teeth digging into her nails over and over again.

When it was just outside of the building, it was tolerable. But now, even this house couldn’t protect her? She wasn’t safe inside or outside. They were coming for her at all costs.

"Evelyn." Zayne stopped short on his steps. It was as if she couldn’t even hear him calling, stuck in her spiraling thoughts. "Evelyn!" He approached, grasping her by the shoulders.

That was enough to snap her out of her trance, pupils dilated at him.

"Z-zayne."

"Calm down. You’re panicking."

"C-calm down?" She crumpled her forehead at him, growing pissed. "You’re asking me to calm down?"

She shoved at him, stepping back. "You saw it. I could have died. It was so close. If I hadn’t bent down to pick up my phone, that shot would have gotten me and I would be dead, bleeding out on the floor by now. And you’re asking me to calm down?!"

"But you’re not dead."

"Today, yes! But what about tomorrow, huh? Do you think they’re going to stop at this? That they won’t come after me again?"

Zayne stared at her and lifted his hand to touch her head. "Then what do you want to do? Panic and cry? There’s nothing wrong with that, but it’s not going to fix anything. Nothing will happen to you. I agreed that I’ll protect you and that I’ll—"

"Protect me?" She laughed nervously, slapping his hand off. "I could’ve died there and guess what, you weren’t around. If I hadn’t been lucky, I’d be dead by now, Zayne. So tell me how? How are you going to protect me, huh? Your home is not even safe enough for me. What should I do? What more should I do? Run, hide? But they will find me. Preston will keep finding me and it doesn’t matter where I run to or where I go!"

"You are not going to run and you are not going to hide from anyone," he said to her, fingers pinching between his brows. "You’re with me and while I may not have been on alert today, it won’t repeat itself. You’re mine to protect and if you’ll just calm down, I’ll keep to it."

Evelyn’s lashes fluttered and she lowered her gaze to the floor, the wetness that had built in her eyes from fear, breaking and dropping down her face. "I can’t calm down."

She shook her head at him. "Zayne, I can’t calm down even if I want to. I’m scared. I don’t want anyone to look down on me or feel that they have finally stepped all over me, but I’m scared. I don’t want to disappoint my father even in his death, but I’m scared. I don’t want to be a coward, but I’m so scared I feel like I’m going to faint."

"I’m scared..."
