Betrothed To An Alpha? I Don't Think So!
Chapter 18: Her And Only Her

Chapter 18: Her And Only Her

"Who is that?" Evelyn asked, gripping the shopping bags.

Zayne introduced, "That’s my personal driver, Enzo. He’ll drive you home."

She furrowed her brows, rather more confused when the said driver walked up to her and collected the bags from her. He proceeded to load them into the car.

"Wait wait." She glanced at Zayne. "Aren’t you coming home with me?"

"No. I have an important meeting to attend," Zayne said.

"B-but you can’t do that."

"What do you mean?"

She approached closer to him, grabbing his hand. "Zayne, what if I die?"

"You’re heading home straight. No one will hurt you—"

"But they could?" She begged with her gaze. "I may not know how to fight or even use a gun, but I don’t have the survival instincts of a cookie! Someone’s been watching us since morning, even you could tell. Why are you asking me to go home alone now?"

"I have a meeting to attend—"

"Let me come with you then."

"You cannot come with me," he said through tight lips. "This is a personal meeting with a business partner. Go, get in the car. Enzo will keep you safe. I’ll meet you later."

"I don’t trust anyone. You never know—"

Zayne turned around and began to walk off, taking his phone out of his pocket to make a call. "I’m on my way. Keep him there. I have no need for a rescheduled mee—"

Someone sprung on him from behind, arms coming around his neck and legs locked around his waist.

He froze.

’Did she just jump on me?’

"You little!"

He twisted his head to meet her gaze. "What are you doing?"

"You either take me with you or come home with me," Evelyn whispered, tightening her grip with no sole intention of getting off him.

His jaw clenched. "I told you to go with Enzo. He will—"

"I’m not handing my life over to someone I don’t even know. Are you listening to yourself? You know my brother has placed a hit on me, and you’re just taking it lightly. Seriously? You’re going to entrust my life to just about anyone?"

Her features twisted into a mask of anger so quickly it surprised him.

"You promised. It was part of the deal. You said you’d protect me."

"Does that mean you’d gum yourself to me twenty-four seven?"

"I will if I have to!"

"You’re driving me nuts," he growled, taking a shuddering breath.

Evelyn gripped at his suit jacket. "I don’t trust anyone. No one in my shoes should, not unless they’re stupid."

"But you trust me?"

"Yes. And without a doubt. A man willing to take a bullet for me... I don’t see what there’s not to trust." She narrowed her eyes at him.

His gaze traveled the length of her face like a physical caress.

"What?" Goosebumps broke out along her arms. It took everything not to get off him and rub them away. The sparks, again, they were breaking all over inside of her. Pinching like the tip of a pin.

Was this all in her head?

"Fine," Zayne relented. "I’ll take you home myself. But get off. People are watching."

She looked around at the eyes on them, shrugging. "Who cares?"

"Evelyn." He breathed out her name.

"What? Why are you calling my name?"

He didn’t make a response but proceeded on with a call. "Yes, please, cancel the meeting. Reschedule for tomorrow. I have something important to take care of."

[Yes, sir]

The call ended.

Evelyn got off him. She ate up the distance between them to stand in front of him.

Zayne tilted his head with curiosity. "What’s wrong?"

"I have a question."

She scratched the back of her neck, clearing her throat.

"Do you like, I don’t know, feel some type of spark when I touch you?"

His brows dipped. He stared at her, too long and hard, she grew nervous under his gaze, shifting on her feet.

"You know what, never mind. This is such a stupid question. I-I meant nothing. I was only—it’s nothing." She turned, heading off towards the car.

Zayne, however, grabbed her, spinning on her feet.

Her chest pounded. She felt sweaty, suffocating, like she’d done the first day she met him. When he stepped so close into her space.

"So you do feel the spark."

"W-what?"

She was confused.

His eyes softened for some reason. "I’d think you wouldn’t. You’re human, after all."

"Human...?" She was unable to make sense of anything. "What do you mean by that? I don’t un—"

Zayne turned away from her and lifted his gaze to one of the tallest buildings in the street. He was staring hard at something—or a person to be precise.

Evelyn followed his line of gaze, but she couldn’t see anything. She however watched him raise and aim his hand in a direction. He shaped his fingers as if a pistol and clicked his tongue.

What was he doing? What was going on?

She looked around in confusion. "Zayne? Is there someone...around here? Who’re you looking at?"

"I’ve found our stalker." Zayne grabbed her hand. "Come with me. Let me take you home first. He’ll be mine to deal with."

He fastened her seatbelt and rounded the car to get in, allowing Enzo to pull off into the road.

At the building where he’d aimed, Ezekial stepped away from his rifle, backing off at the rooftop. His chest was rising and falling in quick breathing.

What the hell was that?

There was no way that bastard could have known he was up there. He was a lot distant from there, enough he had to use the rifle scope to even aim at them. How could he have seen him? And even aim right back at him as if giving him a final warning.

"You’ve got to be kidding me?" He rapidly pulled at his hair, the scar on his face raging. "This has to be some kind of joke."

He shook his head.

"My mind’s just messing with me. Yeah, I’m stressed out, that’s what it is. Now, I’m seeing things. Dammit, dammit! Focus, Ezekial. Your target is Evelyn Darkwood! Her and only her!"
