Betrothed To An Alpha? I Don't Think So! -
Chapter 16: I’m Not Alone
Chapter 16: I’m Not Alone
Preston’s hands balled into fists, and that made Zayne’s eyes go darker with amusement.
He cracked a smile; It was cruel and void of any real emotion. "Many have tried, Preston. Do your best, and see what happens."
Preston shook where he stood, yet didn’t take his hand off Evelyn. "She’s my sister!"
"And she’s mine."
"I don’t care!" he spat. "This has nothing to do with you. I can talk to my sister when I want and however, I please. It’s family issues, none of your business. So, quit interfering and step the fuck back!"
Zayne’s grip grew tighter.
Preston flinched, grunting. His eyes flew wide open in agony, veins popping up on his neck. He shot him a glare, his pride flaring up, unwilling to be intimidated.
His words grounded out through clenched teeth, "Let. Go. of me, Mr. Mancini!"
Zayne didn’t budge. "Unhand her. Don’t make me repeat myself."
Evelyn looked between the two men, furrowing her brows at the dead look in Zayne’s eyes. She’d never seen his gaze so blank with emotions and they were directed at Preston.
Sighing, she ran her fingers through her hair, saying, "Let go of him, Zayne."
Zayne coldly looked at her. "Why?"
"Just let him go," she said. "I can handle myself." Then she turned to Preston. "And take your hands off me."
Preston glared daggers at her. "You bit—"
"Say that word and I’ll slam your head into this wall," Zayne snapped over at him.
Preston felt rage, boiling so hard inside of him, like he could blow up into pieces. Still, he swallowed it down and let go of her.
"Now, you let go of him, Zayne," Evelyn demanded.
Zayne did, taking a step back.
Before she followed Preston, she grasped the man by his tie, pulling him down to whisper, "You don’t have to be so violent, peacock. Reserve that for when I’m in danger, it could really come in handy."
"Please, stop calling me that."
"Are you embarrassed?"
"Evelyn—"
"See you later, PEACOCK!"
He watched her go, dragging a palm down his face. Why had he even lost his temper like that?
What had he seriously gotten himself into with this human?
.....
Evelyn followed behind Preston, heading to who knows where, when all of a sudden, he came to a stop. Before she could even register what he was about to do, the man grabbed and slammed her into the nearest wall, hand coming at her throat.
"What do you think you’re doing, huh? Evelyn?"
"Let go of me!" She tried to force his grip off. "Preston, let go of me! You’re hurting me!" she shouted at him, but Preston wasn’t listening.
If anything, his grip tightened, eyes growing murderous. "What games do you think you’re playing here? No one has power over you? Are you insinuating that you won’t hand over the corporation?"
"Take your hands off me, Preston!"
"Just because you’re betrothed to Zayne Mancini, that has suddenly gotten to your head, is that it?" he questioned. "You think that asshole has your back? That he’ll protect you?"
Evelyn pressed her hands against his chest, trying to push him off.
"You’re nothing more than a tool, you know that? Father gave you to him as a way to seal a deal, nothing more. Don’t go thinking you mean anything. You don’t and you never will!"
He spat, "You are useless, talentless, incompetent and that is what you’ll continue to be for the rest of your life. I’m not going to sit and watch the corporation die at your hands and you know why? Because that will is utter nonsense, whether written by father or not. I am the rightful heir to this corporation. It was already mine before father even died and if you think that you—"
Evelyn’s hand shot out, snatching his collar. She pulled him in, her glare filled with hatred. "Me? Useless? Talentless? Incompetent? Fine. But what does that make you? I mean, you lost to this useless, incompetent woman, surely that makes you more pathetic than a loser, doesn’t it?"
"If anyone is useless here, it’s you, not me," she said to him, shoulders rising and falling in anger. "I’m not the one that ended up tossed aside, losing to a woman he considered unworthy. You worked so hard for dear Papa, yet he chose me. I don’t really know what to say about that, Preston, but your audacity to call me useless is funny."
"You fucking bitch—"
"What?" she asked. "What are you going to do? Try to kill me again? Every day for twenty-two years of my life now, I’ve never escaped you, not your verbal abuse or the way you alienate me. Brandon and Lyra wouldn’t have looked at me the way they do, never, if not because of you. You act and they follow behind you like a dog. You created a class within our family and made me feel like I was some stray picked up from the street."
"And that is exactly what you are."
Preston lowered his head, chuckling.
"Don’t you get it? Our family needed to be divided to grow up competent. Look at Brandon and Lyra, see the difference. That is why you’re nothing but a dirty rag to us and even father, You couldn’t catch up or amount to anything, and that made you nothing but a disgrace."
"Yet..." She looked at him in disdain. "The corporation is mine, not yours. And it’ll never be yours."
A stunned look slapped Preston in the face, and he slowly stared at her with vicious eyes.
She watched as his face crumpled nastily, still, that didn’t stop her. "I’ve overgrown your condensing words or those eyes you lots look at me with. I couldn’t care less what any of you think of me anymore, and you know why?"
She dryly smiled at him.
"Because I’m better than you, Preston, and you know that. And I’ll keep showing you just how much more competent than you I can be. You’re free to use underhanded means because I know you’ll come after my life. But the thing is, I’ll keep surviving and no amount of people you have behind you will pull me down. In case you haven’t noticed, I’m not alone anymore."
