Chapter 32: An unexpected Sleepover
Chapter 32: An unexpected Sleepover
After dinner with Grandma Liu, Sarah felt much better. The old woman had made her laugh and forget about her troubles for a while. Now she was in the guest room, getting ready for bed.
The room was beautiful, with soft pink wallpaper and a huge bed covered in silk sheets. Sarah had changed into her comfortable white cotton robe and tied her long hair up in a messy bun. Her slender neck was now visible, and she felt relaxed for the first time all day.
She went to the bathroom and did her skincare routine. Her face looked less sad now, thanks to Grandma Liu’s kindness.
Sarah walked back to the bedroom and was about to get into bed when she heard a knock at the door.
"That’s strange," she thought. It was almost 11 PM.
She heard some noises outside - footsteps and what sounded like someone talking on the phone. Sarah walked slowly to the door, feeling confused and a little worried.
"Who is it?" she called out softly.
No answer.
Sarah pressed her ear to the door and heard more shuffling sounds. Someone was definitely out there, but they weren’t answering her. Maybe it was one of the mansion staff? But why would they be here so late?
Sarah took a deep breath and opened the door slowly. Her mouth dropped open in shock at the sight before her.
Mason was standing there in his black suit, but he looked different from usual. His hair was messy, his tie was loose, and his eyes looked tired. His face was still cold and unreadable as always, but something about him seemed... softer?
Before Sarah could say anything, Mason gently pushed her aside and walked into her room like he owned the place. He moved with his usual confident stride, but Sarah noticed his shoulders looked tense.
"What... what are you doing here?" Sarah asked, still shocked. "How did you even know which room I was in?"
Mason loosened his tie and looked around the room. "I asked the head butler," he said simply, as if that explained everything.
"But that doesn’t explain WHY you’re here," Sarah said, closing the door behind him.
Mason ignored her question and took out his phone. He dialed a number and put it to his ear.
"Derek," he said in his deep, calm voice. "Did you add the navy blue suit?"
Mason’s eyes looked at Sarah in her white robe, her hair tied up, looking small and confused. For just a moment, his cold expression seemed to soften, but it was gone so quickly that Sarah almost thought she imagined it.
"Okay. And send a new dress for my wife. Something appropriate for shopping. I’ll be sleeping here tonight."
Sarah’s eyes went wide. "You’re WHAT?"
Mason hung up the phone and looked at her with raised eyebrows. "Isn’t it obvious? I’m here to sleep over as well."
"But... but WHY?" Sarah asked, feeling totally confused. "Don’t you have your own house? Your own bed? Why would you want to stay here?"
Mason sighed deeply and ran a hand through his messy hair. The truth was that after Grandma Liu’s phone call, she had called him again. She told him that Sarah looked stressed and hurt. He had to be a proper husband, so he came. He didn’t even know how he came here.
But Mason wasn’t about to tell Sarah that. He just thought it in his heart and kept his face expressionless.
"Our house." he corrected. "And does it matter why?" he said coldly. "I’m here now."
Sarah felt a small smile trying to form on her lips when she realized he was actually going to stay. Despite everything that had happened between them, he had come here. But she quickly hid it and turned away so he wouldn’t see.
"Fine," she said, trying to sound annoyed. "But this is my room."
Mason took off his suit jacket and hung it on a chair. Then he loosened his tie completely and unbuttoned the first few buttons of his white shirt. Sarah could see a hint of his chest, and she quickly looked away.
"Are you really planning to sleep in your office wear?" Sarah asked, trying to distract herself.
"No," Mason said simply. "I have clothes coming."
"But Derek can’t possibly get here until—"
"He’s already here," Mason interrupted. "I called him on the way. He’s waiting outside with everything I need. He’ll get your dress later."
Sarah blinked. "You... you planned this?"
Mason didn’t answer. Instead, he walked to the door and opened it. Derek was indeed standing there with a garment bag and a small suitcase.
"Everything you requested, sir," Derek said quietly, handing over the items. He looked horrible. Even worst than Mason.
"Thank you. Go home and get some rest," Mason said.
Sarah watched this exchange with growing confusion. Had Mason really planned to stay here all along? Or had he just decided on the way?
Mason closed the door and set the bags on a chair. Sarah couldn’t help but stare. Even when he was tired, Mason looked incredibly handsome. His skin was so white and perfect, and his sharp jawline made him look like a model. His tall height and broad shoulders filled up the room, and his dark eyes were mysterious and attractive.
The way he moved was so confident and graceful. Even something as simple as unbuttoning his shirt looked elegant when he did it.
"Stop staring," Mason said without looking at her.
Sarah’s face turned red. "I wasn’t staring!"
"Sure you weren’t." Mason picked up a black bag.
He started walking toward the bathroom, but Sarah suddenly realized something important.
"Wait!" she called out. "Why do you want to share a room with me?"
Mason stopped and turned around. He raised one eyebrow - something he did when he thought someone was being stupid.
"If we don’t share a room, Grandma would be suspicious of our marriage. She needs to be convinced that we’re a real couple now," he said matter-of-factly.
Sarah felt her heart skip a beat.
Then Mason added with no shame at all, "You can take the couch and I’ll take the bed. Unless you can’t handle sleeping in the same room as me."
Sarah’s mouth fell open. "Are you serious right now? This is my room!"
"Actually, this is my grandmother’s room in my grandmother’s house," Mason said calmly. "So technically, it’s my room too."
Sarah wanted to throw a pillow at his smug face. "That’s not how it works!"
Mason just shrugged and walked into the bathroom, closing the door behind him.
Sarah stood there feeling angry and confused. Why the hell did he come here? She didn’t want to see him after everything that happened today, but... seeing him now made her feel somewhat happy. She hated that she felt happy about it.
She also hated that he looked so good even when he was tired and annoyed.
"Get it together, Sarah," she muttered to herself. "He’s just here because of Grandma Liu. It doesn’t mean anything."
She immediately made her face look normal again and went to sit on the bed. She was not going to let him see that she was glad he was here. And she was definitely not going to let him take her bed.
She picked up one of the decorative pillows and hugged it to her chest, trying to calm down. The sound of running water came from the bathroom, and Sarah tried very hard not to think about Mason taking a shower.
"Focus, Sarah," she told herself. "Think about something else. Like... like how you’re going to make him sleep on the couch."
A few minutes later, Mason came out of the bathroom. Sarah’s breath caught in her throat.
He had changed into a white loose home T-shirt and black loose pants. His hair was messy and damp, but his face was still expressionless. The casual clothes made him look younger and more relaxed, but somehow even more handsome.
The T-shirt fit him perfectly, showing off his broad shoulders and chest. The pants hung loosely on his long legs. He looked so different from his usual formal appearance, but just as attractive.
"Stop staring again," Mason said, not looking at her as he folded his suit neatly.
"I said I wasn’t staring!" Sarah snapped, but her face was red.
"Sure," Mason said, clearly not believing her. "Your face is red for no reason at all."
"It’s warm in here."
"It’s not warm. You’re just flustered."
Sarah wanted to argue, but she couldn’t because he was right. Seeing him in casual clothes was doing strange things to her heart.
Mason walked over to the bed and looked down at her. "Move. I’m sleeping here."
Sarah glared at him. "No way! YOU can take the couch. I’ll take the bed. Why should I take the couch? I was here first!"
"Because I’m too tall for the couch," Mason said simply. "And you’re short enough for it."
Sarah’s eyes became dangerous. "What did you just say?"
"I said you’re short enough—"
"If you call me short again, I will break your nose," Sarah threatened, standing up on the bed so she was closer to his height.
Mason looked at her standing on the bed in her white robe, her hair messy, her face angry, and for some reason, he found it... amusing? But he kept his face straight.
"You’re still short even standing on the bed," he said calmly.
"THAT’S IT!" Sarah lunged toward him, but Mason easily caught her wrists. As usual, no reaction.
"Let me go!" Sarah struggled against his grip, but he was too strong.
"Are you going to try to hit me again?" Mason asked.
"Only if you keep calling me short."
"Then I guess I’ll have to keep holding you," He mused. "Because you are definitely short."
Sarah’s face turned red with anger. "I am not short! I’m average height."
"Average height for what? A middle school student?"
"I hate you so much right now."
Mason’s lips twitched slightly, like he was trying not to smile. "You hate me a lot for someone who was staring at me in my pajamas."
"I was not staring."
"Sure you weren’t."
They stared at each other for a moment. Sarah was breathing hard from anger, and Mason was holding her wrists gently but firmly. They were standing very close to each other.
"Fine," Mason said finally. "We’ll both sleep on the bed. It’s big enough."
Sarah blinked. "Both of us? On the same bed?"
"Don’t get any ideas," Mason said coldly. "I just want to sleep.
"Fine," she said. "But you stay on your side of the bed. And don’t you dare touch me."
"Trust me, I won’t," Mason said.
They both got into bed, staying as far apart as possible. The bed was huge, so there was plenty of space between them. Sarah pulled the blanket up to her chin and turned away from Mason.
"Good night," she said quietly.
Mason didn’t answer, but after a few minutes, Sarah heard his breathing become slower and deeper. He had fallen asleep. He was really tired.
Sarah lay there in the dark, very aware of Mason’s presence next to her. She could smell his cologne and hear his quiet breathing. It was strange having him so close, but also... comforting?
She shook her head. She was not going to think about how nice it felt to have him here.
But as she drifted off to sleep, Sarah couldn’t help but smile a little. Mason had come to stay with her. Maybe he didn’t care about her feelings, but he had come anyway.
And for tonight, that was enough.
