Chapter 93: Chapter 93

Betrayed by Blood

Avery sat in the dimly lit library, her fingers tracing the spine of an old book. Her eyes scanned the words intently. A sigh escaped her lips; nothing here was helpful. She was curious, desperately wanting to know how to break the mate bond. She had a week left until her birthday, and she was concerned about what Cain wanted to do with her. Her gaze flickered to her burned hand, now wrapped in a small bandage. She remembered how Cain had carefully helped her clean it, even though she had refused his help.

His actions confused her greatly, and she wasn’t sure what he wanted with her anymore, so she found herself in the pack’s library.

She had begged the attendant to allow her in, even though it was late at night. She wanted to know exactly what it would mean if their bond was broken and if she could do it.

Avery’s gaze flickered over the writing. None of it was making sense, and instead, it was just confusing her more. She paused, leaning back against the chair, a tired sigh escaping her lips.

She heard footsteps behind her and froze, quickly pushing the book off the table. She turned to see who it was, only to find Selena.

The other came forward, her eyebrows furrowed slightly. In her hands was a book too. "You’re here so late at night?" She whispered, making her way to Avery’s side.

Avery nodded. "I wanted to check something out," she replied, her gaze falling to the book Selena held. "I didn’t know you come here," she said. The other shrugged, taking a seat next to Avery.

"I came to return this. Dan was kind enough to let me borrow it for a day. I promised I wouldn’t let anything happen to it," she whispered back, her gaze flickering to the book Avery was trying to hide. Her eyebrows furrowed as she read the title.

"Avery," she muttered, shifting her gaze back to Avery, who shifted uncomfortably in her seat. "Are you... Have you found your mate? Do you want to break your bond?" She asked, her gaze piercing into Avery, almost like she could read her soul.

Avery let out a nervous laugh, waving her off dismissively. "Me? I doubt the goddess has a mate in store for me. I just... I was curious after the conversation we had, and since I was hired and had no tasks left for today, I thought I could read some more about it," she said with enough conviction, hoping Selena would buy it.

Selena stared at her for a few more seconds, then shrugged as she set her book on the table, turning to face Avery fully. "Did you learn anything worthwhile with it?" She asked.

Avery sighed, shaking her head. "No, I didn’t," she replied softly.

Selena smirked. "I knew it! These things are falsely written to mislead people. There’s nothing there to tell you how to break a bond," she said with a smile and then leaned closer to Avery, her eyes twinkling with something Avery couldn’t pinpoint. "I told you already, though. I know someone who breaks mate bonds."

Avery swallowed hard. "Ah... I don’t..." she was cut off before she could complete her words. Selena leaned closer, draping her hand over Avery’s own.

"Think about it, Avery. It’s not like you’re breaking a bond. You’re just curious. What harm can your curiosity do? Think about it and let me know. I can have you meet her in person in an hour if you want. I have my ways," she said with a wink.

Avery gave a tight nod, her lips pressed into a thin line. She watched as Selena stood up. "I have to return this and go back to my work. I still have a lot of chores to complete," she said and walked away.

Martha sat on the edge of her bed, the letter clutched tightly in her hands. Her fingers trembled, but it wasn’t fear—it was excitement. She was so excited. She fell back on the bed, a wide smile on her face. This was her gateway ticket. With this, she would gain her position, her title, the respect she deserved. She would rule over all the servants. She would once again be relevant. All of this would be achieved because of Lydia’s stupidity.

Martha burst out laughing. Lydia really thought she was smart, but she went ahead to hide the letter from her office to her room. How dumb could a person be?

Martha sat up, flicking a stray tear from her eyes from how hard she’d laughed. She glanced at the letter in her hands again. Lydia was going to be in so much trouble with Cain. She could even lose her position as beta. Martha’s lips stretched into an even wider smile. The thought of Lydia losing her title and possibly being imprisoned while she would gain her title as head maid again was exhilarating.

Her phone buzzed on the bedside table, pulling her from her thoughts. She reached for it and frowned at the name flashing on the screen. Matt.

She debated picking up his call, knowing he was only calling to bark out more orders. She rolled her eyes as she swiped right, placing the phone against her ear.

"Do you have anything for me yet?" Matt’s voice was sharp and impatient.

Martha’s gaze flickered to the letter in her hand and rolled her eyes. "Not yet. Xander hasn’t reached out to her at all. In fact, they’re all working on the upcoming festival. There’s no news on Xander," she replied.

"And Cain? He hasn’t barked out any orders? There’s no lead on his end?" He asked, and again, Martha rolled her eyes.

"If there was any news, I would’ve called. Besides, I’ve been too focused on Lydia that I haven’t had time to check on whether Alpha Cain has a lead."

"What? What do you mean you haven’t had time?" Matt barked over the phone.

"You asked me to focus on Lydia, and that’s what I did," she refuted, twirling the letter between her fingers.

Matt sighed frustratedly over the phone. "Fine! Find out everything you can on Cain’s lead with Xander and get back to me, Martha," he ordered coldly.

"Yes, Alpha Matt," Martha dragged out.

"Don’t waste my time, Martha," Matt growled softly on the other end.

The line went dead, and Martha tossed the phone aside with a sneer. "Idiot," she muttered irritably. She then stood up and carefully folded the letter and slipped it into a hidden compartment in her drawer, locking it securely.

"Tomorrow," she whispered to herself. "Tomorrow, Alpha Cain will know the truth, and Lydia’s little reign will end."

~~~~~~~
Martha woke up as early as she could, dressed in her best clothes. She looked at herself one last time in the mirror, a wide smile stretched on her face. This was it. It was officially the best day of her life.
She grabbed the letter out of where she’d hidden it and stepped out of the room.
Martha made her way out of the servant quarters and headed directly to the courtyard. She smiled and responded to every greeting passed her way. She could hear the other servants behind her, wondering what had gotten her in such a joyous mood, wondering if she was still mentally okay, wondering if some demon had possessed her, but she didn’t care. Not today.
Instead, she walked faster, knowing Cain would be in his office already. She reached the training ground and paused on seeing the warriors already training. She couldn’t pass here with how many they were, and she couldn’t wait for them to be done either. She had to figure something out.
She looked back and forth and saw it, a smile making its way to her lips yet again. A shortcut to the main pack house. Martha turned back and circled the training ground, finally she burst onto the road and began walking.
Cain sat at his desk, his jaw tense as he flipped through reports he barely cared to read. He was waiting for news from Callum and hadn’t gotten any news yet.
A sharp knock on the door jolted him from his thoughts. "Come in."
Lucas stepped inside, his usual calm demeanor missing, he looked like he’d seen a ghost.
"What is—"
"There’s someone here to see you, Alpha."
~~~~~~~~~

Martha’s grip tightened on the letter as she approached the pack house. She could almost feel her triumph, of Lydia’s impending ruin. Cain would see her loyalty, her determination. And he would reward her.

But then, she saw it.

A figure, draped entirely in black, stepped out from the shadows ahead, blocking her path.

Martha froze, her heart pounding in her chest. Their face was hidden beneath the hood of a dark cloak.

"W-Who are you?" Martha stammered, her voice trembling as she took a hesitant step back. "What do you want?"

The figure didn’t respond. Instead, they stepped forward, pulling out a shining silver blade.

Martha’s breath hitched, and panic surged through her. She turned on her heel, ready to run. She didn’t make it far. She stumbled, barely catching herself before spinning back to face the figure.

"Stay back!" she shrieked, her voice high and panicked. She raised a trembling hand in front of her as if to ward them off. "I’ll scream! Alpha Cain will—"

She never finished her sentence.

In one swift motion, the figure lunged forward. The blade sliced cleanly across her throat, and Martha fell, clutching at her throat as blood poured between her fingers.

Her wide, terrified eyes stared up at the figure as she raised a trembling hand, as if pleading for mercy. But the figure didn’t move.

Instead, they knelt beside her, their movements calm. Reaching down, they pried the bloodstained letter from her lifeless fingers.

The figure stood up, the letter now clutched securely in their gloved hand. Without a word or a glance back, they turned and disappeared, leaving Martha’s lifeless body behind.
