Chapter 89: Chapter 89

Betrayed by Blood

Avery sat curled up on her bed, her knees pulled to her chest as quiet tears slid down her cheeks. She couldn’t stop replaying Cain’s harsh words, the anger in his voice when all she had done was help. She honestly wished she had just stayed back in the room and not gone anywhere. Today was her break from the incessant troubles she had been put through since she arrived at his pack, and even today, she couldn’t have a break.

She wiped her tears roughly. Her chest tightened as his words echoed in her head again. Was that really what he thought of her? All those words he said, the rage in his eyes. She shuddered internally, rubbing her wrist gently. She looked at it again; it was angry red from how tight he had held her. What did she do that was even so bad? Why was he so bothered over something a random warrior said? It wasn’t like he wanted her, so why?

A knock on the door startled her. She quickly wiped her face and sat up.

"Come in," she said.

Millie walked in, her expression softening when she saw Avery’s red eyes. Behind her was Selena. The other slowly poked her head from behind the door, a small smile on her face. "I’m sorry, it was just-" she began, but Millie quickly cut in.

"Beta Lydia gave us a break. She said to come keep you company. Are you okay?" Millie asked quietly as Selena stepped into the room, shutting the door carefully behind her.

"I asked to tag along. I hope you don’t mind?" Selena asked, and Avery shook her head, her lips pressed into a thin line. She shifted her gaze to Millie, who was still staring at her.

"We heard what happened. Are you okay? Did he hurt you?" Millie asked, her eyes flicking over Avery’s body like she was searching for injuries.

Avery couldn’t help but smile at this. Ever since that day she helped Millie when the other girls were attacking her, she has been more relaxed with Avery. "I’m fine. I’m not hurt," Avery replied calmly.

Selena sat down opposite them, crossing her legs. "Hmm...everyone keeps talking about it. They say the alpha was borderline angry. Some say they’ve never seen him that angry, at least not in a long time. They kept talking about how the maid was done for and would be decapitated. We didn’t even know it was you at first until..." Selena trailed off, her gaze darting to Millie.

"Until?" Avery asked quietly, her gaze darting back and forth between Millie and Selena.

"Martha. She came to gloat about how you were in trouble with the alpha and how you were done for," Millie replied and then shuddered outwardly.

"She’s just so..." she shook her head in disgust.

"Annoying, irritating, nosy, infuriating. There are a lot of names you can call her, you know," Selena replied.

Avery chuckled at this. It wasn’t like she was wrong. Martha was truly all of these things. She was jolted out of her thoughts when she felt Millie’s hand on her thigh. "What did you do to annoy the alpha so much? I know you’ve always avoided him," Millie asked.

Avery opened her mouth to talk but paused. What was she supposed to say? Millie didn’t know about her bond with Cain, so she couldn’t say anything. She hesitated slightly, then opened her mouth to speak. She didn’t get too far though as Selena cut in sharply.

"Like you need a reason to offend that man. Don’t forget who he is. He’s Alpha Cain. You don’t need to offend him; even the sound of your breathing can offend him," Selena said with conviction, glancing at Avery and smiling, "I’m sure Avery here didn’t do a thing. He’s just like that, you know," Selena replied.

Millie nodded in agreement, "That’s right. I don’t know what I was thinking asking that. We all know the kind of person he is," Millie replied. Avery looked at her, surprised to hear the tinge of bitterness in her voice. It was so unlike her to speak and sound so bitter, and for a second, she was taken aback.

"D-did he do something to you?" Avery asked carefully, her gaze peering into Millie, who stiffened for a brief second. She then let out a nervous chuckle, shaking her head. "Not to me. To the head warrior," she muttered.

Selena propped forward, "I heard he cut off his head."

Millie shook her head. "It was his arm, and let me tell you, it was the most brutal scene I’ve ever seen, and I lived in a-" she paused, catching herself. "The head warrior was a good man, and to see him reduced to nothing," she shook her head, almost like she was reliving it. Avery couldn’t remember if Millie was there that day. All she could remember was the shock that coursed through her veins, the fear that wrecked her body when she saw Xander on the floor in a pool of his blood.

"Hmm...I heard he was with Alpha Cain for years. I don’t think Alpha Cain would just cut off his arm if he didn’t do something wrong. He must’ve crossed a boundary that had been set out for him already. He might’ve touched something that wasn’t his."

Avery swallowed hard at the words, her gaze snapping towards Selena only to find her already staring at her. Selena smiled and then waved her hand dismissively.

"I don’t know...maybe he’s not as brutal as people say. After all, there are always two sides of a coin."

Millie shook her head, huffing lightly. "You’re way too good, Selena. Alpha Cain doesn’t have a single bone of goodness in him. He’s hard rock ruthless. In all of this, there’s only one person I pity, and that’s who the moon goddess paired him with."

Avery’s breath hitched at Millie’s words, her heart sinking deeper into her chest. She pressed her lips together, trying to keep her face neutral. If only they knew the truth.

Selena tilted her head, her gaze fixed on Avery. "I mean, she’s not wrong," Selena said, leaning back slightly. "Being paired with someone like Alpha Cain? That would be its own kind of punishment."

Millie nodded vigorously, her eyes darkening. "Imagine being tied to someone who’s incapable of kindness. Someone who doesn’t think twice about hurting people, even the ones who are supposed to be close to him. That poor girl—whoever she is. She doesn’t stand a chance."

Avery forced a small smile, ignoring the lump forming in her throat. Selena continued, "A mate is supposed to be a blessing, not a burden. If I were her, I’d run."

Avery looked away, her heart thumping hard in her chest. They were right, a mate is supposed to be a blessing. The one she has right now is far from a blessing.

Avery hesitated, her fingers fidgeting with the hem of her dress as her mind wandered. "Is there... is there a way to break a mate bond?"

The question lingered in the air. Millie blinked in surprise, turning to look at Avery. Selena, however, leaned forward, her lips curving into a smile.

"Break a mate bond?" Selena repeated, tilting her head. "That’s an interesting question. Why do you ask?"

Avery shrugged, trying to appear indifferent. "Just curious. You know, since you both were saying how terrible it would be to be stuck with someone like that. There must be a way out, right?"

Selena studied her for a long moment. Finally, she smiled again, leaning back slightly. "There is one way," she said, "But it’s not easy, and it’s not something just anyone can do."

Millie frowned. "You can’t just break a bond. The Moon Goddess made them for a reason. It’s unnatural."

Selena chuckled. "Unnatural or not, it’s possible. There’s someone who knows a lot about breaking bonds. A... specialist, you could say." Her voice dropped to a whisper, as though she was sharing a dangerous secret.

Avery’s heart skipped a beat. "Who?"

Selena shrugged nonchalantly. "She’s a rogue, but not the kind you’re thinking of. She’s powerful, mysterious, and some say she’s been alive for centuries. She doesn’t come cheap, though. And the process..." Selena trailed off, her gaze darkening. "Let’s just say it’s not something you’d do unless you’re desperate."

Millie crossed her arms, her eyebrows furrowed, "How do you even know all this?"

Selena smiled, "I know a lot of things. You’d be surprised what you hear when people don’t think you’re listening." She turned her gaze back to Avery, her smile fading into something more serious. "Why do you want to know? Have you met your mate, Avery? Is it you who wants to break the bond?"

Avery’s breath hitched, her heart thudding loudly in her chest. She forced herself to laugh, though it sounded hollow even to her own ears. "Me? No, of course not. I was just curious, that’s all."

But Selena’s eyes lingered on her, as if she could hear the frantic beating of Avery’s heart. Avery looked away, her thoughts racing.

Could she? Could she really break the bond?
