Chapter 77: Chapter 77

Betrayed by Blood

Kendra paced back and forth in her room, her heels clicking against the polished wood floor. The walls, painted in muted golds and silvers, did little to soothe the anger bubbling inside of her. It had been a week since Cain ruthlessly banished her from his pack as if she meant nothing to him. He threw her out without a second thought, all for that servant. Kendra had spent days in bed, pondering where she went wrong. Why he had to punish her when he initially wanted this. He wanted her to threaten Avery too, so why? Why couldn’t he see she was only doing this because of him? Why did he have to act like she was worth nothing? He humiliated her so horribly. Her, Kendra, the envy of other women. He turned her into a laughing stock all for a pathetic excuse of a woman.

Now, she was much calmer. She wasn’t angry at him anymore. Now, all she wanted was to hear from him. Kendra glanced at her phone on the bedside table, ringing endlessly. She crossed her arms, tapping her fingers impatiently against her sleeve.

Finally, the call connected.

"What do you want, Kendra?" Carol’s voice was sharp and impatient.

"Mother!" Kendra blurted out, stopping mid-stride. "How is Cain? He’s not been answering my calls or messages. What’s happening at Vehiron, mother? Has Cain said anything about me? Does he miss me? Has he tried-"

"Oh my goodness, Kendra! Shut the hell up," Carol barked through the phone, her voice sharp enough to cut through Kendra’s frantic rambling. "You think Cain’s losing sleep over you? Use your damn head for once."

Kendra froze at her mother’s tone, her lips parting in shock. "I—What are you talking about? I didn’t do anything wrong! It’s that stupid little—"

"Own up to your shit for once and stop being a goddamn coward! You’re calling me for the first time since your humiliating exit, and your first question is about Cain? A man who has not a shred of sympathy for you? Have you really lost all your senses, Kendra? I didn’t raise you to be a man’s doormat!" Carol snapped irritatedly.

Kendra’s expression turned grim, her jaw clenched. "Cain is not like any random man, mother! He’s different. He’s Cain. You know this!" She gritted out through clenched teeth.

"Oh, spare me the theatrics, Kendra," Carol’s tone was biting, dripping with disdain. "Cain this, Cain that—have you been listening to yourself? The man publicly threw you out of his pack, humiliated you in front of everyone. Where is your pride?"

"I don’t expect you to understand!" Kendra snapped, her voice trembling with frustration. "Cain and I have a bond. He’s just upset right now. Once he cools off, he’ll realize what we had and—"

"What you had?" Carol interrupted with a bitter laugh. "What you had, Kendra would’ve come to play if you didn’t go and mess it all up. Everything I’ve worked for just down the drain because of you!" Carol nearly screamed over the phone.

"If only you had just listened to me! If you had just stopped and actually listened to me. I told you, I was gonna take care of it all. I would take care of the servant. All you had to do was focus on Cain, but what do you do?" Carol scoffed, "You blew it all up in my face. I’ve never been so humiliated in my entire life." She paused for a second.

"Now what? You’re gonna frustrate me with calls on how Cain’s doing? Is that it? You think groveling like some omega is going to bring him back? No, Kendra. If you want to fix this, you need to stop acting like a pathetic little girl and start acting like the alpha’s daughter I raised. You’ve lost favor with Cain, and the only way to regain it is to make yourself indispensable again!"

Kendra was silent for a moment. "And how exactly do you expect me to do that?" she asked bitterly.

"Use your damn brain," Carol shot back. "Find a way to make yourself valuable. Stop obsessing over that servant girl and focus on what matters. Cain isn’t going to notice you if you’re wallowing in self-pity."

Kendra’s lips curled into a spiteful sneer. "That servant is the reason I’m in this mess in the first place. If it weren’t for her—"

"Enough!" Carol snapped harshly. "That girl is irrelevant. You’re the one who let yourself be played. Leave the girl to me and please use your head, Kendra! You need to gain Cain’s favor back. I don’t care how you do it, but I want results!"

The call ended abruptly, leaving Kendra staring at the phone in stunned silence. Her hand trembled as she lowered it, her chest heaving with frustration.

Barely a second after the call, her phone buzzed with a new message. She glanced at the screen, her brow furrowing as she read the text.

Martha: I have news I don’t think you’ll like very much, but I’m obliged to tell you. Avery spent the night in Alpha Cain’s room again, and from what I heard, it looks like they shared the night. She’s becoming a bigger thorn, Miss Kendra. I just thought to tell you as promised.

The words hit Kendra like a slap, her eyes scouring the text again, and for a moment, the room was deathly silent. Then, a scream ripped from her throat as she threw the phone across the room. It hit the wall with a crack, the screen shattering.

She shot up from the bed, grabbing a vase and smashing it against the floor. "Her? Again? That pathetic little nobody?" she screeched.

Kendra ripped the covers from her bed, throwing them across the room, her breath coming in short gasps. "Why her?" she spat, "Why not me?"

The room was in shambles by the time Kendra finally collapsed onto the floor, her knees trembling beneath her. Her chest heaved as she stared blankly at the wall. She had to do something. She needed to gain Cain’s favor back as soon as possible. She can’t stay here for two months. She just can’t.

Lydia was outside of Vehiron’s border. Lydia frowned as she glanced around the unfamiliar clearing, her brows furrowed in confusion. She gripped her coat tighter around her, a shiver running down her spine.

The guard who had led her here was nowhere to be seen. He had been vague when he approached her earlier, insisting that he had urgent news to share with her but was scared for his life. He told her where to meet him. Lydia had been skeptical but still came, knowing she could very well defend herself if it ever came to that. Now, she stood alone in the middle of nowhere.

She reached into her pocket, pulling out her phone. Dialing the guard’s number, she pressed the phone to her ear, listening as the line rang. No answer. She tried again, her frustration doubling.

"Damn it," she muttered under her breath, lowering the phone. She turned on her heel, ready to head back to the pack, when suddenly, a hand clamped over her mouth.

Panic surged through her as she struggled, her phone slipping from her grasp and landing on the floor.

"Lydia," a familiar voice hissed close to her ear, and she froze.

The voice...she knew that voice. Slowly, the hand over her mouth eased, and she turned around to face him.

"Xander?"
