Chapter 69: Chapter 69
Betrayed by blood
Cain paced the room like a caged animal, his breathing uneven as Callum stood silently. Every muscle in Cain’s body was tight, and the air seemed to stop under the weight of his anger.
His fingernails scraped against the desk, Callum’s words echoed repeatedly in his mind: Xander escaped. Five guards dead.
Xander escaped.
Callum shifted uncomfortably, the movement drawing Cain’s sharp gaze.
"Three days," Cain growled, his voice low and dangerous. "Three fucking days. Is that all it takes for my pack to descend into chaos? And Lydia thought it wise to hide this from me?"
"Alpha, she—" Callum began, but the venom in Cain’s glare shut him up immediately.
Before Cain could speak again, the door creaked open. Both men turned to see Lydia stepping into the room. She had rushed out of her room when she heard Cain had returned. She had hoped for more days before he returned, but he stayed away for just three days? It was way too short.
Lydia stepped into the room, her mind going over everything she’d practiced to say. Her feet came to a halt the second she stepped in to see Callum in the office and Cain looking like he had just heard the worst news ever.
Her heart dropped. He knows.
Lydia’s face ran pale, her eyes darted back to Callum, who looked away from her. Her heart pounded harder in her chest as the realization of what had just happened dawned on her. She swallowed hard, "Alpha, I—" she started, her voice steady.
"How dare you, Lydia?" Cain growled, his voice low and dangerous. His eyes burned with anger as he slammed his fist onto the desk, the sound echoing through the room. "How fucking dare you!"
Lydia flinched, her calm façade slipping for the first time as she quickly lowered her head. "Alpha, I—"
"You knew!" Cain’s voice rose, his anger raw. He stepped around the desk, closing the distance between them with predatory intent. "You knew Xander escaped. You knew my men were dead. And instead of telling me, you thought you could handle it? You hid it from me for three whole days!"
Lydia’s throat tightened as she swallowed hard, her voice trembling slightly when she responded. "I thought it was best to—"
"You thought?" Cain hissed, his face mere inches from hers now. "Your job is not to think, Lydia. It’s to follow my orders and ensure this pack runs like the well-oiled machine I built it to be. Do you have any idea what you’ve done? Did you do this because Xander is your brother? Hiding something of this gravity away from me because that traitor is your brother?"
Lydia’s eyes widened, and she began to shake her head. "I- I swear on my life that isn’t it. I was trying to protect the pack!" she protested.
Cain’s laugh was cold and humorless, sending a cold shudder down her spine. "Protect the pack? By withholding crucial information from your Alpha? You failed the very pack you were supposedly protecting, Lydia. You failed me. Tell me, did you help him escape? You couldn’t stand the sight of your brother locked up, so you had to form a plan to get him out, right?" he gritted out.
Lydia’s shoulders stiffened. She couldn’t believe Cain was saying these words to her. She’d gladly lay her life down for the pack, and here he was questioning her loyalty to the pack. Lydia’s body trembled, different emotions coursing through her veins. She swallowed hard, "I- I only made a judgment call, Alpha. You were indisposed—"
Before she could finish, Cain’s hand shot out, gripping her throat roughly, his eyes turning pitch black, his veins straining against his skin. He pushed her back against the wall, the force of the impact rattling a painting that hung there.
"Don’t you dare use that as an excuse," he snarled. "You don’t get to decide when I’m informed about threats to my pack. You don’t get to decide anything without my permission. Is that clear?"
Lydia’s hands clawed at his wrist, her eyes wide with fear. This was the first time she’d truly felt fear. She nodded as best as she could, choking out, "Yes... Alpha."
"Did you think your rank could protect you, Lydia? Let me make something clear—you serve at my pleasure. Fail me again, and I’ll make sure your head decorates the gates of Vehiron. Do you understand?" Cain spat out venomously.
"Y -Yes, alpha." Lydia choked out, tears blurring her eyes now, her face red.
"What you have done is unforgivable. As the beta of the pack, you will not only be interrogated and questioned. You will be punished severely," he spat out and finally released her. She crumpled slightly but caught herself, her breathing ragged.
"Get out," Cain spat, his voice deadly calm now. "And don’t show your face to me again, not unless I call for you."
Lydia hesitated for the briefest of moments, her gaze flickering to Callum. She nodded stiffly and bowed her head before leaving the room.
Cain turned back to Callum, his chest heaving heavily. "I want Xander’s picture placed in every pack, on every wall, every gate, every tree, every car in this region," Cain ordered, his tone sharp. "I want everyone to know that he is a traitor, a murderer, and an enemy of this pack. No one and I mean, no one—is to shelter him. Anyone caught aiding him will face the same fate as those guards he slaughtered."
Callum nodded, his face pale. "Understood, Alpha."
Cain stepped closer, his green eyes narrowing as he jabbed a finger at Callum’s chest. "I don’t care if it takes every last resource we have. I want him found. Dead or alive, but preferably crawling on his knees for mercy he’ll never get. Bring him to me. Do you understand me?"
"Yes, Alpha," Callum replied. He bowed again and then walked out.
Cain walked towards the window, livid and pissed. Lydia had crossed the line this time. He sighed, dragging his hand over his face as Callum’s words echoed in his head once again. ’We’ve apprehended the young warrior who lured Avery away during the rogue attack. He’s in the dungeon.’
It was time he set things right in Vehiron, starting with the young warrior and whoever sent him.
