Chapter 58: Chapter 58
Betrayed by Blood
"She is overheated, which would explain the sweating despite the cold room. But more concerning is her... physical state." He looked at Cain, his gaze dropping slightly, "She’s in pre-heat, Alpha."

Cain stood by the bed, his gaze fixed on Avery’s pale, sweat-slicked face. The doctor’s words echoed in his mind, louder than they should.
Pre-heat.
How was this even possible? She hasn’t gotten her wolf yet, so how? How could her sub-gender already show? It wasn’t two months yet, so how? These thoughts remained through his head as the doctor continued his check-up on her. As though the man could sense his thoughts, he straightened, grabbing his suitcase, ready to leave.
"Alpha, I believe she hasn’t gotten her wolf yet and is already showing signs of preheat. I believe she’s been under immense stress, and this has triggered her heat before its time..." the man said, and Cain nodded, his gaze stuck on an unconscious Avery.
Just as the doctor reached the door, he paused for a second, turning back to look at Cain, whose eyes were fixed on Avery. "Alpha, I know this is beyond my status, but forgive me... Her heat will be gruesome when it finally arrives, seeing as it’s coming before it’s supposed to." He paused again, swallowing hard. "It’ll do her immense relief if her mate shared her heat with her." He rushed out then bowed before rushing out of the room.
Cain stood still, the man’s last words echoing in the room. ’It’ll do her immense relief if her mate shared her heat with her.’ Cain shook his head, dragging his hand over his face, he turned towards his alcohol cabinet and reached for a whiskey but paused, turning back to look at Avery still unconscious on his bed. He shut his eyes tight and instead reached for a bottled water, drinking it all in one go like a starved thirsty man.
Cain clenched the empty bottle in his hand, his jaw tightening as he tried to push the doctor’s words from his mind.
His gaze drifted back to Avery, her chest rising and falling shallowly, her damp hair clinging to her face. She looked fragile, smaller somehow, and for a moment, something inside him stirred.
This is your fault, he thought bitterly.
His fingers twitched as he set the bottle aside, his steps bringing him back to the bedside. Cain crossed his arms, standing over her like a sentinel. The room was too quiet now, save for her labored breathing.
Stress. That’s what the doctor had said. She’d been under immense stress. And Cain didn’t have to think too hard to know the source of it.
Cain ran a hand through his hair, letting out a sharp breath. He had been careless with her—too harsh, too demanding, always testing her boundaries. But he hadn’t expected her to break like this. She wasn’t supposed to break like this to the point of triggering her heat.
A soft sound escaped Avery’s lips, her face twisting slightly as she stirred. Cain straightened, his eyes narrowing as her lashes fluttered and her eyes slowly opened.
She looked around, her eyes unfocused, a soft groan escaped her lips, and she shut her eyes tightly then opened them again, this time her eyes met his.
Her eyes widened the second she registered his presence, she sat up, wincing internally. She lowered her head, her thoughts running wild. Why was she in his room? On his bed? What the heck happened? Last she remembered was going into her room...
"Alpha.." she called out softly, slowly looking up at him. She had questions but knew he wouldn’t respond to her.
Avery sat there, on edge and nervous. She had no idea what happened, and frankly, it was beginning to freak her out. Cain wouldn’t say a word and only stops at the edge of the bed, staring at her with his jaw clenched. He looked pissed, angry, and it made her even more anxious. She racked her brain tirelessly, searching for whatever she did to make him pissed.
After minutes of the dead silence, it finally clicked. She was in his bed, in his room. Of course, he’s pissed about that.
Avery bit her lip, her hands clutching the sheets nervously. "I... I don’t know how I got here," she whispered, breaking the silence. "I-I must’ve passed out or something... I’ll leave right now."
She swung her legs over the edge of the bed and stood up. She took a step forward, the room spun endlessly. Her legs gave out beneath her, and she let out a soft gasp as her vision blurred.
Before she hit the ground, Cain was there, his arms wrapping around her effortlessly. He steadied her, his grip firm but not painful.
"What the hell do you think you’re doing?" he snapped at her.
Avery flinched, suddenly feeling very tired. "I’m fine," she mumbled.
"Fine?" Cain snapped, his jaw tightening. "You can barely stand, let alone walk. Stop being so damn stubborn." He hissed out as he helped her back to the bed. Avery sat still, watching as he walked towards the table and took out a bottled water and cup. He handed it to her, his expression firm. "Drink."
Avery hesitated, her fingers trembling as she took the glass. She sipped the water, suddenly realizing she was much thirstier than she thought.
Once she finished, she set the glass aside and looked up at Cain, her eyes on him. "Why am I..."
Cain stared at her for a long moment before answering. "You’re in pre-heat," he said bluntly.
Avery froze, her heart skipping a beat. "Pre-heat?" she whispered to herself. The words didn’t sound right. What did he mean preheat? How can she be in any kind of heat when she hasn’t gotten her wolf yet? She wasn’t due to get her wolf until her birthday, which would be in a few weeks.
Avery shook her head, "But that doesn’t make sense. I can’t be in preheat because I don’t have my wolf. I can’t-"
Cain looked away, "Your body’s reacting earlier than it should. The doctor said it’s because of stress."
"Stress?" Avery echoed, her mind running through everything that’s happened. Yes! She’s been extremely stressed, but is it enough to have her in preheat?
"Stress?" Avery frowned, her mind reeling. "But... that doesn’t make sense. I don’t even have my wolf yet." She mumbled to herself.
Cain turned to look at her, "Yes, but apparently you’ve been under immense stress. If only you took better care of yourself, then you wouldn’t be in this situation." He said gruffly.
Avery stiffened at his words, her breath catching in her throat. ’If only she’d taken better care of herself? So this was her fault?
She nodded stiffly after some seconds, swallowed hard, shut her eyes close and gathered all the strength she could and stood up.
Cain’s eyes widened for a brief second when he saw her standing. "What do you think you’re doing standing? Do you think-"
"Leaving. I’m leaving and heading back to my room. I’m not staying here. I don’t want to trouble you any longer, Alpha. I’ll manage the rest on my own." She replied stiffly
Cain’s expression darkened, his jaw clenching as he stepped in front of her, blocking her path. "You’re not going anywhere," he said firmly.
Avery glared up at him, her frustration bubbling up. "Am I a prisoner?" The words slipped from her lips before she could stop them and he looked taken aback, like he wasn’t expecting these words from her.
Cain blinked, visibly taken aback. "What?" he echoed, his voice dripping with disbelief. "Prisoner?" He scoffed, "You can barely stand without falling over," Cain shot back, irritatedly. "Do you think I’m going to let you stumble out of here and collapse somewhere else? I might be cruel, but I’m not heartless."
Avery’s eyes flashed with anger. "Then why do you care? Why now? You’ve never cared about me before. Why start now?" She took a step back, her voice rising. "What does it matter to you if I fall?"
Cain froze at her words, For a moment, he didn’t know how to respond. Instead of answering, he stepped back, "You can’t leave. You’re in pre heat. Your heat would hit in some days and it’s only going to get worse. You need help."
Avery’s breath quickened, her chest tightening with frustration "Help?" she whispered bitterly. "Why do you think I want it from you? You’ve made it clear enough that I don’t matter. I don’t want to share my heat with someone who will just reject me the second I get my wolf.." she paused for a second and looked at him in the eye. "I can take care of myself." She replied
Cain scoffed, his gaze sweeping over her.
He took a step closer to her, his posture stiff and tense. "If you could’ve taken care of yourself, you wouldn’t be in this position. And you damn well know it," he said, his voice barely above a growl.
Avery stared at him, Tears threatened to spill, but she refused to let them fall. I’ll rather suffer and be done with it than share it with you, Alpha Cain." She gritted out tightly.
Cain stepped forward, he gripped her chin, forcing her to look up at him, his eyes burning into hers intensely. "I don’t care what you want," he growled, "You’re not leaving this room. Get used to it."
Avery’s heart raced as she felt his fingers tighten around her chin. She was tired, bone tired of everything. She squeezed her eyes shut, images of him cutting Xander’s arm off, cutting Rowan’s head off all flashed in her head. Avery’s eyes shot open and she jerked his hand off, shaking her head. She couldn’t...
"You can’t force me to share my heat with you," Avery said, her voice sharp. "It’s against the laws of the wolves. It’s my choice." She said and stepped aside and walked out with her heart pounding hard in her chest.
