Chapter 171: Eyes in the Dark

TERESA’S P.O.V.

Luke was the first to storm out of the office, his heavy footsteps echoing down the hallway. I caught a glimpse of his clenched fists before the door slammed shut behind him. My brother who had always been calm and collected was now like a volcano, always simmering, and tonight felt dangerously close to eruption.

"Guess I’ll babysit the hothead," Rylan said with a grin, his voice laced with sarcasm. He grabbed Gregory by the back of his shirt like he was hauling a particularly annoying child.

"Let me go, you don’t know who you’re dealing with!" Gregory screeched, his voice cracking as he tried to yank free.

"Shut it," Rylan growled, his patience wearing thin. "You’re lucky Adrian hasn’t turned you into dust."

As if on cue, Adrian—calm, collected Adrian—got up from his chair and walked towards Gregory. "Actually..." Adrian’s eyes gleamed with a dangerous glint, his lips curling into a small, almost lazy smile. He flicked his hand, and Gregory’s eyes widened in terror, his breathing quickening as he stumbled. "No! Not again! I’ll behave, I swear!"

Rylan gave him a mocking pat on the shoulder. "Oh, don’t worry, buddy. You’ll be seeing two pink headless dancing dragons in no time."

Lucian’s eyebrow arched as he looked at Adrian. "Why reactivate the hallucinations?" he asked, his tone amused.

Adrian’s expression didn’t shift. "He got on my nerves."

The room was silent for a beat before I snorted, the laugh escaping before I could stop it. "Adrian, you’re terrifyingly petty," I said, shaking my head.

"Petty?" Adrian echoed, feigning offense. "I prefer ’creatively vengeful.’"

Lucian rolled his eyes before turning to me, his voice dropping into something softer. "Teresa, come with me for a run. We both need to clear our heads."

I hesitated, the tension from Helen’s revelations still weighing heavily on me. But Lucian’s gaze was steady, and I found myself nodding. "Fine. But I don’t think it will make any difference. My temper isn’t going anywhere."

Lucian shook his head and sighed. Juliette smirked from her spot by the window. "I’ll stay here with Elizabeth to keep an eye on our new witchy friend," she said, jerking her head toward Helen, who was scowling like she’d just been insulted.

Elizabeth raised an eyebrow. "You’re acting like I can’t handle her."

Juliette smirked. "Oh, I know you can. But it’s more fun if I’m here to help."

Helen rolled her eyes, muttering something under her breath about overly confident werewolves.

Lucian grabbed my hand, leading me out of the office and into the cool night air. The scent of fresh leaves and damp earth filled my lungs as we stepped outside. Lucian shifted effortlessly, his black wolf towering over me. He bent his massive head and nudged my shoulder, his voice slipping into my mind like a warm breeze. "Get on, Teresa."

I hesitated for a moment, my lips twitching into a smile. I might have changed but my Lucian remained his kind sweet self to me. I climbed onto his back, settling in against his soft fur. He took off, the wind whipping past us as he ran.

As the scenery blurred, my thoughts spiraled. Everything had changed since I became a Fae Titan. My emotions felt muted—like someone had turned down the volume on surprise, anticipation, and fear. But anger? That dial had been cranked to maximum. It scared me, this constant simmer of rage just beneath the surface. And then there was my love for Lucian—still there, still overwhelming—but the fear of losing him gnawed at me. What if my anger drove him away? Will he leave me like my ex relationships did?

I sighed, burying my face in his fur. How did my mother handle this? No wonder she wanted to live as a human. But going back to that fragile human state wasn’t an option for me.

Closing my eyes and letting the rhythm of his breathing calm me. His strength, his warmth—it was the only thing keeping me afloat.

Lucian slowed after what felt like forever, stopping beside a towering tree. He crouched low, letting me slide off his back before shifting back into his human form. The transition was seamless, his body a work of art that left me momentarily speechless.

He caught my expression and smirked. "Like what you see, sweetheart?"

I scoffed, feeling heat rise to my cheeks. "Don’t flatter yourself, husband."

He chuckled, pulling me into his arms as we sat beneath the tree. His warmth enveloped me, chasing away the chill of the night.

"I’m sorry," I whispered, staring at my hands.

Lucian tilted my chin up, his green eyes searching mine. "For what?"

"For being... a handful lately. I don’t know how to turn it off," I admitted, my voice cracking. "I’m scared you’ll get tired of me and leave."

His grip on me tightened, his voice firm yet tender. "Teresa, I could never get tired of you. Do you know how much I love you? You’re fierce, stubborn, and completely maddening—and I wouldn’t have it any other way. You’ve stood by me when I wasn’t easy to love, and now it’s my turn. We’ll figure this out together."

He leaned in, his lips brushing against mine softly at first, then with more roughness. His hands cupped my face, his touch grounding me as his tongue effortlessly explored my mouth. His kisses were hungry and mine matched his energy. It was everything—comfort, love, a promise.

When we finally pulled away, both of us breathless, he pressed his forehead to mine. "You’re stuck with me, Teresa. For better or worse."

A voice suddenly slipped into my mind, making Lucian and I groan. "Love birds, I think it’s time to get back here. There’s still a witch waiting."

Lucian sighed, his forehead still pressed against mine. "Adrian wants us back," he muttered, his tone half-annoyed, half-amused.

"Yeah, I heard his annoying voice too." I said with a small laugh.

Lucian smirked, shifting back into his wolf form. Let’s go, my queen.

I climbed onto his back, and we raced through the woods, the night sky a blur above us.

When we re-entered the office, it felt like we were walking into a thunderstorm. Helen stood rigid in the center of the room, her features were sharp and her voice was tight with frustration as it filled the space.

"The Fae are dangerously unpredictable," she was saying, pacing in deliberate strides. "They’re deeply connected to nature, but their emotions... their emotions are their Achilles’ heel. They feel too much, too deeply, and it clouds their judgment. It makes them both powerful and vulnerable."

I barely heard her words as I glanced at Lucian. His hand found mine, warm and soothing, his touch chasing away the icy anger which was hovering beneath the surface, trying to creep it’s way up.

You’re stronger than this, Teresa, his voice hummed in my mind through the link we shared. It was steady, reassuring, a lifeline I clung to.

Lucian cleared his throat, drawing everyone’s attention. "Helen," he said, his tone firm. "Do you have any idea what kind of danger Teresa’s mother was warning you about?"

Helen opened her mouth to answer, but before she could utter a word, Elizabeth’s voice cut her off.

"Stop talking," she commanded, sharp and urgent. Her hand shot up, silencing the room.

Luke, standing near the doorway, stiffened. His brows furrowed as he took a cautious step forward. "What is it, Elizabeth? What’s going on?"

Elizabeth’s eyes, usually calm and calculating, darted around the room, scanning every corner as though she could see something the rest of us couldn’t. "We’re being watched," she said finally, her voice a whisper but laced with certainty.

Helen’s face darkened. "You’re right." she confirmed, her voice trembling with unease.

Elizabeth instantly began murmuring under her breath, the words foreign and rhythmic, like a song from a long-lost world. Her hand moved in a deliberate arc through the air.

"What’s she doing?" I whispered to Lucian.

He didn’t answer, his focus locked on Elizabeth.

The room seemed to shake as her chanting grew louder. Then, with a sudden motion, she thrust her hand toward the center of the room. Out of nowhere, a mirror materialized, hovering in midair.

"What the hell?" Luke breathed, his voice laced with both awe and fear.

We barely had time to process what we were seeing before the mirror exploded.

The sound was deafening, a sharp, piercing crack that reverberated through the room. Shards of glass scattered like a thousand knives, glinting as they rained down around us.

Helen stumbled back, her face pale as a sheet. "This isn’t just someone listening," she said, her voice trembling. "They’re watching us. Actively."

Elizabeth’s expression hardened, her jaw set with grim determination. "And if there’s one, there could be more," she said darkly, her eyes scanning the shattered remnants on the floor. "Who knows how many of these mirrors are hidden across the pack? Whoever this is, they’re using magic to spy on us."

Lucian stepped forward, his presence commanding. "We need to secure the area immediately," he said, his voice firm. "If they’ve been watching us, they already know too much."

Elizabeth nodded, but her gaze lingered on me and Luke. "It’s not just the pack they’re after," she said, her voice dropping to a near growl. "Teresa and Luke are their targets. Whoever’s doing this won’t stop until they get what they want."

My heart raced with anger and my fists clenched. "Why us?" I asked.

Elizabeth’s eyes softened slightly, but the worry in her face remained. "Because you’re important, Teresa. Both of you are."

I scoffed. "Well, it’s seems to me like they have a death wish."

Helen stepped forward, reclaiming some of her usual composure. "There’s no time to waste," she said firmly. "We need to sweep the entire pack for these mirrors, and we need to do it now. Every second we wait gives them more information, more power."
