Becoming the Villain's Discarded Wife -
Chapter 88 Adai
Chapter 88: Chapter 88 Adai
Perhaps due to the imminent separation.
There was a vague sense of bewilderment in Nanzhi’s heart. What was her current status?
She had already discussed it with Wenchen, yet she still held the title of his wife.
"Sister-in-law! Zhiyu!"
Eleven walked in with Zhui Yue and his own Ta Yun, seeing Nanzhi and Zhiyu there, he immediately waved to them with a grin.
"Eh." Nanzhi laughed in response, then asked, "When are you setting off?"
Eleven didn’t answer Nanzhi’s question, instead, he turned to look at Wenchen, implying that it’s him who should voice these matters.
"We’re leaving shortly, we need to depart before the sun fully rises." Wenchen held Shen Zhiyu in his arms, the picture of paternal love.
"Then you guys rest for a bit. I’ll go make some food for you to take with you on the road."
Nanzhi left for the kitchen as she spoke, leaving the men in the courtyard laughing merrily.
Watching their silly, naive smiles, Wenchen sighed internally, why did all his brothers seem like fools?
Nanzhi in the kitchen had complicated feelings, but her hands didn’t slow their work.
She had been here for over a month now.
The book had only briefly described the events before Wenchen met the female protagonist, even the original host’s role was briefly mentioned.
Thinking carefully, Nanzhi seemed to recall a detail she had overlooked.
After the original host’s death, Zhiyu was brought up by Miaomiao. They had fled their home after Lihua Village suffered a disaster, eventually meeting Wenchen.
What exactly was the disaster that befell Lihua Village?
And when did it strike?
Understanding the turning point of the events gave Nanzhi something to think about.
Now, all the households in the village had food reserves, and even the worrisome issue of drinking water had been addressed. Had they changed the plot, or would there be other deviations in the story?
"Mom!"
Hearing her son’s voice brought Nanzhi back to reality. Fearing he might be in trouble, she quickly turned her head to look.
She was taken aback by what she saw.
A sparrow with a red beak perched atop the head of her adopted son. The boy looked thrilled, pointing at the sparrow and laughing, revealing his little pearly teeth.
"What’s going on?"
"Dad, Dad said this little bird can find him!" Zhiyu ran to Nanzhi joyfully. He wanted to look up at her but was afraid of knocking the sparrow to the ground, settling for not meeting her gaze.
"Dad said, said when me and mom miss him, we can write a letter and have the bird deliver it!"
After hearing her son’s explanation, Nanzhi was momentarily stunned.
She knew about carrier pigeons, but had never thought sparrows could deliver messages.
Could this be a special skill of the second male lead?
The sparrow seemed to sense Nanzhi’s skepticism and fluttered its wings to land on her hand.
Nanzhi froze mid-chop, careful not to hurt the bird, but the little sparrow tilted its head, examined her, dropped its tail, and left a suspicious object behind.
Seeing the white droppings land on the stove, Nanzhi felt choking at heart.
Seeing that the sparrow had made a mess, Zhiyu grabbed it and ran outside.
Nanzhi stifled her anger, wiped off the bird droppings, and resumed cooking.
Wenchen and his men had brought back several wild rabbits from their hunt a few days earlier. She tried pickling them. While they paled in comparison to the pickled meat she had tasted before, they were still decent.
Considering that Wenchen and his friends had helped stock up a lot of stuff for the house, Nanzhi didn’t feel comfortable receiving everything without giving anything back, especially considering she is currently his wife. It only seemed right to leave a good impression on his brothers.
Furthermore, as she was afraid the pickled meat would not keep well, she had specifically pickled it in advance and let it dry. It tasted better than dried meat and could keep longer than regular pickled meat.
Considering they were about to set off, Nanzhi prepared some food and made several mixed grain pancakes to take along.
The group sat in the hall waiting for the food. Ada and his brother exchanged a glance before looking at Shen Wenchen, who was playing with Shen Zhiyu on the side.
"Brother Shen, is your wife really not going with us with Zhiyu?"
"It’s not convenient at the moment." Shen Wenchen didn’t explain further, instead continuing to teach Shen Zhiyu how to communicate with Adai.
He had initially planned to bring Zhiyu along. When he found out that his wife was still alive, he decided to bring them along and settle them in first. Once the mission was completed, they could live peacefully as a family of three.
But his wife still left.
Now thinking about it, it might have been due to his rebirth that the future developments deviated somewhat. Compared to adventuring with him, their current home – Lihua Village – was comparatively safer.
The mission would be completed by November. If everything went as in his previous life, he would come back and take them away.
Adai, standing on Shen Wenchen’s hand, noticed that he had zoned out. Somewhat irked, he chirped a few times before settling on Shen Zhiyu’s head.
After breakfast, Nanzhi gave them the packed pancakes and dried meat before going to find Shen Wenchen once more.
"This is the clothing she made for you. I think it would be better if you took it with you."
Shen Wenchen nodded in thanks after accepting the package, then said, "Adai has some abilities. It’s quite familiar with this place after a few days, so if anything happens just write a note and let it bring it to me."
"Okay."
Seeing the awkwardness between them rising up again, Nanzhi finally gathered the courage to ask, "Um, are you going to come back?"
"I will come to fetch you before the end of the year." Shen Wenchen replied seriously, looking straight at Nanzhi.
"Okay."
Seeing the man before her, Nanzhi nodded.
After pondering it over the night, she had understood some things clearer.
Since she was here, she would have to take things one step at a time.
The chance of getting a divorce from Shen Wenchen wasn’t high, but being known as his wife here in this place offered some protection.
Since Shen Wenchen vowed to return to pick them before the year’s end, she would then discuss the matter of divorce once they’d weathered the storm and departed this place.
No matter if future events unfolded as in the novel, at least now she could see Shen Wenchen was genuine towards the original host.
"There’s something I want to tell you."
Nanzhi’s voice was small, and Shen Wenchen just quietly listened.
He knew that the woman before him wasn’t his wife. It was almost like a case of possessing another body, as in tales told by storytellers. She, through the body of his wife, had lived on. After spending these days with her, he wasn’t a fool.
She probably just didn’t want to be tied down by the identity of his wife.
But it was unlikely that he would agree to a divorce at present.
As he started to consider how to persuade Nanzhi to give up on the idea of divorce, he heard her softly say something.
"Before you go, could you... take Eleven and the others to walk around the village?"
He looked at Nanzhi, slightly confused for a moment as he didn’t understand her meaning.
"As Zhiyu and I will be left alone here, we might feel a bit unsafe."
Then, Shen Wenchen nodded and agreed. He pondered and then suggested, "Should I buy a watchdog to take care of this place?"
Upon hearing his words, Nanzhi quickly waved her hands, "No, no need."
She had, of course, thought of this before. This village was safe for the time being, but who knew what accidents might occur?
However, if they were to consider getting a dog to watch over their home, Dahuang from the village wouldn’t do. All it did was wag its tail upon seeing people.
She had asked grandma Qin about it, and she’d replied that a watchdog would cost at least two taels of silver. On top of that, they couldn’t be stingy when it came to feeding it.
Thinking about her budget, Nanzhi quickly shook her head.
