Chapter 58: Chapter 58 Gougou? All are Gougou! _1

The role of the elders in the village is well understood by everyone. After hearing Ms. Zhou’s words, any displeasure Zhao Si felt had to be swallowed.

Even if he was braver or more obtuse, he didn’t dare to offend the village elders.

Seeing that everyone was staring at him, Zhao Si had no choice but to turn around and leave resentfully.

The troublemaker had left, and the rest of the people in Lihua Village gathered and stood waiting for Shen Dashan’s next words since he hadn’t dismissed them yet.

Shen Dashan said, "Now, we have fifty jin of old rice, forty-two jin of white flour, three hundred and ten jin of dark flour, sixty-two jin of potatoes, and twenty-nine jin of sweet potatoes left. We’ll distribute them to every family in the village that has suffered disaster. If a family is more hard-up, we’ll give them a bit more. I just hope you don’t begrudge this, after receiving these grains. We don’t ask you to offer them in sacrifice during festivals. We just want you to remember them."

After hearing this, everyone started to chime in agreement. They thought that without contributing money or effort, they wouldn’t gain anything. They had never imagined that they would be considered. After all, the grain was free. Where was the reason to complain about the amount?

The four elders looked at each other and nodded in satisfaction.

They weren’t too pleased when Shen Dashan was initially elected village head, but he had done a good job over the past decade or so.

The task of distributing the food was given to Shen Qingchuan and Shen Qinghe, while Shen Dashan sat on the side to rest.

Remembering Mrs. Liu’s words, Nanzhi took the opportunity to sneak up on Shen Dashan while no one was noticing.

"Ms. Lin? What are you doing?" Shen Dashan, who had just relaxed and was catching his breath, saw Nanzhi approaching stealthily, which puzzled him. She looked like she was up to something.

Could it be something she couldn’t let others know?

"Uncle Li Zheng, I have something to tell you."

After Nanzhi’s words, Shen Dashan sat upright with a troubled look, "Could it be that Diniu is causing trouble again?"

Nanzhi quickly waved her hand and explained, "No, no. These past few days, Mrs. Liu and I have been working on something, and we wanted to let you know."

Shen Dashan felt a jump in his eyelids, instinctively feeling that whatever Nanzhi was about to say would be of help to the village. He straightened his clothes and allowed her to proceed.

Seeing Shen Dashan so serious, Nanzhi composed herself before saying, "Mrs. Liu and I ground chestnuts into chestnut flour and were able to get six to seven percent yield."

Upon hearing these few words, Shen Dashan’s eyes widened in disbelief, "Girl, is what you’re saying true?"

Nanzhi nodded affirmatively, "Yes."

"So, what can be cooked from the chestnut flour?"

"It can be used to steam buns and pancakes. It isn’t much different from the coarse flour bought from the town."

Shen Dashan took a deep breath, stood up and clapped his hands, praising ’good’ three times in a row!

Hearing the commotion, those who were waiting in line for grain distribution turned to look.

Nanzhi was startled by the sudden attention and quickly slipped away after giving a few nervous laughs.

"Good news! Great news!" Shen Dashan’s mood, which had been dampened by Zhao Si, immediately lifted.

Still smiling, he said, "Just now Ms. Lin told me that she and the Shen Dazhu family discovered that chestnuts can be ground into flour, and the yield is sixty to seventy percent!"

"Sixty to seventy percent?"

Aunt Guihua exclaimed in excitement. Due to the drought, all the crops in her field had died, and there was no hope of a autumn harvest. Although there was grain stored at home, it had to last until next spring, and they hadn’t touched much of their rice and flour, mostly eating chestnuts and sweet potatoes.

On the rare occasions they did eat flour and rice, continuous consumption of chestnuts and sweet potatoes was becoming tedious. If chestnuts could be ground into flour, then properly dried and stored, it would last a lot longer!

Besides, wheat only yielded about seventy percent during milling. If chestnuts could yield sixty to seventy percent flour, the two hundred jin of chestnuts lying in her home could be turned into over a hundred jin of chestnut flour!

The other villagers, whose situations were similar to Aunt Guihua’s, asked upon hearing Shen Dashan’s words. "How do we do it, Li Zheng? Tell us quickly!"

Taking advantage of the chaos in the village, Nanzhi ran off to look for Gougou.

However, she looked everywhere and still couldn’t find a trace of Gougou.

"Mrs. Liu, have you seen my Gougou?"

Unable to find him, Nanzhi was anxious beyond words. She knew there were supposedly no child traffickers in this area, but if the child had gotten lost or into any trouble while playing...

Just the thought made Nanzhi break out in a cold sweat.

"Gougou? I think he was playing with Doudou and others just now." Mrs. Liu looked around but didn’t see any of the children, which she found strange.

"I thought they were all here just now, where did they go?"

Having said that, she quickly began to help in the search.

Shen Miaomiao noticed Nanzhi’s frantic behavior and found it odd. Upon questioning, she found out that Gougou and Doudou, along with some other kids, were missing and quickly joined the search.

"Gougou!" Nanzhi called out while feeling immense regret. Why didn’t she take Gougou with her earlier?

"Gougou!"

"Yes?"

Upon hearing the reply, Nanzhi hurriedly went towards the source of the voice, only to find out it was an eight or nine-year-old boy.

"Auntie Lin, why did you call me?" The boy, recognized as Nanzhi, scratched his head in confusion.

"Ah, it’s you, Gougou. Did you see Auntie Lin’s little brother, Gougou?" Shen Miaomiao came over and asked the boy.

"Auntie Lin’s little brother, Gougou?" The boy thought for a moment before shaking his head: "I didn’t see him."

Nanzhi didn’t mind being referred to as ’Auntie’, just offered a quick word of thanks and hurried off in another direction to continue searching.

As a result of her inquiry, she managed to identify four other Gougou’s in the village.

There was even a five-year-old girl named Gougou.

Unable to find her child, Nanzhi sat on the ground, buried her face in her hands and sobbed uncontrollably.

Although Mrs. Liu was anxious, she tried to console Nanzhi: "Don’t cry, my dear. Maybe the children are just playing around. There are no child kidnappers in the village. Don’t worry, maybe Gougou has already gone home."

Nanzhi was nearly to the point of fainting from grief, when suddenly she heard a sweet young voice calling: "Mother!"

Recognizing the voice as Gougou’s, Nanzhi immediately lifted her head.

Upon looking up, she saw Gougou, covered in mud, standing there with Doudou and Niuniu.

Mrs. Liu, seeing her grandchildren covered in mud was so angry she grabbed Doudou by the ear and demanded, "Where have the lot of you run off to?"

Doudou, ears pinched by his grandmother, cried out in fake agony. If Mrs. Liu didn’t know exactly how hard she was pulling, she might have been fooled by the child’s antics.

Gougou, seeing his mother’s teary eyes, quickly ran over and wrapped his arms around Nanzhi.

"Mother, don’t cry." Seeing Nanzhi looking stunned, Gougou panicked and tugged on her sleeve.

"Mother! Mother!"

It seemed like Nanzhi had snapped back to reality. She looked at Gougou, wiped her tears, and finally mustered a hoarse voice to say, "Gougou, Mommy will give you a new name, ok?"
