Becoming the Villain's Discarded Wife -
Chapter 55_1
Chapter 55: Chapter 55_1
When Nanzhi saw it was Ms. Wu, the smile on her face froze a bit.
She didn’t want to interact with Ms. Wu too much, fearing she might suddenly be attacked again.
Seeing Nanzhi’s change of expression, Ms. Wu also felt somewhat embarrassed, she knew that Nanzhi would not be laughing at her because of all the things she did.
She knows that she has done many wrong things. What could she possibly say?
So she simply lowered her voice and called out once more.
"Sister Nanzhi..."
"What do you want?" Nanzhi’s eyebrows knitted together, was Ms. Wu having another breakdown like last time?
Yet she was still calling her "sister Nanzhi".
The thought of hearing "sister Nanzhi" from Ms. Wu’s mouth sent shivers down Nanzhi’s arm.
"I came here specially to thank you." Ms. Wu, seeing Nanzhi’s defensive look, faltered before speaking.
"Thank me? What for?" Nanzhi remained on guard, even pondering if she would be able to beat Ms. Wu at all if she went crazy.
Although she was skinny when she first arrived, she had been eating well for over half a month, and with the hatchet at her feet, if a fight were to break out, she was confident she would have a good chance of winning.
"Last time, everything about Shi Tou, I really owe you a big thanks." Ms. Wu, seeing Nanzhi’s guarded look, could guess what she was worried about.
Gougou, hearing the commotion on his mother’s side, hurried over, glaring fiercely at Ms. Wu.
Despite finding it heartwarming, Nanzhi still pulled Gougou behind her.
"Thank me?" Nanzhi scrutinized Ms. Wu skeptically, was this some kind of distraction?
"I... I’ve changed for the better. Everything that happened before was my fault, I won’t do it again." Ms. Wu twisted her scarf in her hands, after the incident with Shi Tou, she truly realized her mistake.
She now understood that her father-in-law would not accept her and even her husband, Li Tian, probably wanted to divorce her too.
The only person she could rely on in the entire family was her son.
"So why didn’t you thank me in the village, why run all the way here?" Nanzhi did not relax her guard because of Ms. Wu’s words, after all, could all of Ms. Wu’s deeds be wiped clean with a simple ’I was wrong’?
"I... I just wanted to pick some chestnuts." Ms. Wu replied, pointing at the basket and hatchet she brought with her.
Nanzhi rolled her eyes internally, as if she was supposed to believe that.
"I... I’m serious."
Nanzhi waved her hand, "Enough, if you say you’re here to pick chestnuts, then you pick yours and I’ll pick mine. Don’t say anything about thanks, as long as you don’t cause trouble here it’s fine."
She didn’t wait for Ms. Wu to explain any further, and with a call to Gougou, she picked up her basket and left.
Even if there was the tiniest probability that Ms. Wu had improved, what did it have to do with her?
Hadn’t her predecessor been bullied by Ms. Wu enough in the past? It wasn’t possible that she would buddy up to her just because she uttered ’I was wrong’.
"Mother, what’s wrong with Aunt Wu?" Gougou, seeing Ms. Wu looking over towards them from a distance, was somewhat fearful.
"Ignore her." Nanzhi picked a few chestnuts off the ground and threw them into her basket before casually replying.
Gougou just nodded in confused agreement, it was best to listen to his mother.
Once her basket was filled with around 20 pounds of chestnuts, Nanzhi wiped the sweat off her face and, together with Gougou, descended the mountain.
As they passed by Ms. Wu, she quickened her pace, as if she was scared that any sort of encounter with Ms. Wu would cause trouble.
Watching them hurriedly depart, Ms. Wu slowed down her actions.
Watching them go, she felt a sting in her nose.
She had been married to Li Tian for 19 years. She used to be the belle of Dawan Village.
Unfortunately, she bumped into a local ruffian when she followed her mother to the town to sell grain. That was when she met Li Tian, who was working in the town.
Li Tian was handsome. As a 16-year-old boy full of youthful vitality, he had accompanied his father to work in town. When he saw her being harassed by the ruffian, he immediately charged at him with the wooden stick in his hand.
It was then that a 15-year-old Wu Zhaodi saw a young man standing up for her for the first time.
That was their first meeting. Afterwards, she always pleaded with her mother to take her to town, hoping she’d see that young man if she was lucky.
Six months later, she learned that the boy was Li Tian, a resident of Lihua Village. Then, when autumn came and he stopped working, she was called home by her mother for marriage.
Suspecting she would never see that young man again, she bumped into him one morning.
The young man came with his parents and a matchmaker to propose. When she saw him again, he was laughing and nodding at her.
Later, he always said that the name Zhaodi didn’t sound good, and he privately called her Xuanyi.
The first year was good, but later, she failed to conceive. At home, she was treated like a servant. Even her younger brother-in-law had a child before her.
Li Tian seemed to have become a different person, and he no longer laughed with her.
Later, she had to eat many bitter medicinal soups before she finally bore Shi Tou.
Thinking about the way Shi Tou lay on the ground that day, with his eyes tightly shut and his face pale, Ms. Wu wiped away her tears.
She was already 35 years old. She couldn’t be divorced, she couldn’t let Shi Tou become a motherless child.
"Mother, I want to eat chestnut flour steamed buns." Gougou, walking in front of Nanzhi, was waving his little wooden stick.
"Alright, mother will make it for you when we get home." Nanzhi adjusted the strap of her basket and said with a smile.
Having returned home, Nanzhi put her basket in the corner of the main room and hurriedly went to the kitchen.
She had not actually made chestnut flour steamed buns before, but she had made steamed buns with her grandmother when she was younger, so she supposed it would be similar.
She bustled around in the kitchen for a long time. Even Gougou, with a hungry little belly, came into the kitchen to wait. Eventually, Nanzhi brought out a dish of misshapen "steamed buns".
"Mother, these buns look really ugly." Gougou frowned at the dish of steamed buns, their shape reminded him of turds.
...
Nanzhi looked at the chestnut flour buns that Gougou had scoffed at. They did seem a bit ugly.
"That doesn’t matter, they may look ugly, but I’m sure they’re delicious." Nanzhi said as she ripped off a small piece of bun and put it into her mouth. Although it wasn’t as soft as a white flour bun, the overall taste was alright.
Next time she should mix in some dark flour to make it look better.
"Gougou, look, Mother has eaten it; you should try it too." Nanzhi held out a piece of bun, indicating he should have a taste.
Gougou was a little hesitant to look at the plate of buns.
But Mother had eaten it, so it should be alright, right?
In the end, with his little face all scrunched up, Gougou reluctantly broke off a small piece.
"Mother, is this really edible?" Gougou looked at the thing in his hand uncertainly.
Nanzhi cleared her throat softly, "Gougou, you should trust Mother."
