Chapter 535: Chapter 535: Parasite

Nanzhi, Ming Qin, and Shen Miaomiao were engrossed in thought, sitting together in the city lord’s residence.

The biogas pit was completed, but they were lacking something to replace the rubber hose for transporting the gas.

They had considered using bamboo, but the bamboo in the city was dry and rigid, unfit for bending and twisting. The ornamental bamboo planted by the wealthy households had either rotted due to soil contamination or grown too thin to be of any use.

While they were worrying, the panting voices of the children came from the top of the wall.

"Zhiyu! Where did you guys slip off to again?"

Seeing all the children lying on top of the wall, Nanzhi was instantly exasperated.

None of those children are easy to manage!

Shen Zhiyu stuck out her tongue, not bothering to defend herself. She quickly jumped off the wall, ready to catch her siblings below.

Out of all of them, only Yueyue couldn’t climb the wall, and Yuanbao was too small, so they didn’t trust her to jump down on her own.

One by one, they all climbed down from the wall, and then Shen Zhiyu hurried over.

"Did you guys go to the city wall again?"

"Yes."

The children nodded guiltily.

Seeing their honesty, Nanzhi felt both angry and somewhat amused.

"You still dare to climb this wall?"

"Mom, we brought something back!"

Knowing she’d be punished if she didn’t change the topic, Shen Zhiyu quickly took out the porcelain bottle she had been carrying.

"What’s that?"

Ming Qin and Shen Miaomiao looked at the children, then at the bottle on the table, both puzzled.

"It’s...it crawled out of the head of that monster!"

Shen Zhiyu spoke, casting a glance towards Nanzhi, trying to gauge her reaction.

"What is it?"

Instead of focusing on the kids’ escapades, Nanzhi became consumed by what Shen Zhiyu said.

It crawled out of the creatures’ heads?

What is it?

To be on the safe side, Shen Miaomiao fetched a copper basin from inside the house, and only then did they carefully open the porcelain bottle and pour out its contents.

The alcohol trickled down from the lip of the bottle and just when Nanzhi began to feel impatient, a form dropped out.

Looking at the translucent creature in the basin, Nanzhi furrowed her brows. She instinctively looked up and met Ming Qin’s gaze.

"Parasite!"

Both voices rang out at once, their gaze growing more puzzled at the creature in the basin.

There are many parasites that can survive in the human brain.

Neither Nanzhi nor Ming Qin are experts in this field.

Knowing these creatures are known to consume raw flesh, including... their own kind, it wouldn’t be surprising for them to be infected with parasites.

But something about the form of the parasite in the basin was unsettling.

"Mom, it’s smart. It’s like it can understand human speech!"

Shen Zhiyu pointed at the parasite and said.

Initially appearing dead, the parasite subtly trembled at the sound of Shen Zhiyu’s voice.

Nanzhi squinted, a guess forming in her mind.

As if to test something, Nanzhi asked someone to bring a bucket of water.

In the water was a crucian carp the size of a palm, swimming restlessly.

When the water was poured into the basin, the previously motionless parasite appeared to be stimulated, and it began squirming rapidly.

Its transparent body nearly invisible in the water, only the bright red string inside its body stood out, revealing its movements.

"Put the fish in there."

Nanzhi spoke in a low voice.

Xiaomi rolled up her sleeves, caught the crucian carp, and put it in the basin.

As if sensing danger, the crucian carp struggled wildly in Xiaomi’s hand, trying to get away.

For a split second when the carp hit the water, it seemed stunned, motionless, before it began to flap its tail, trying to leap out of the basin.

Water splashed out of the basin as it struggled, but thankfully Nanzhi had ordered everyone to keep their distance, and so no one was splashed.

Once the water calmed, Shen Miaomiao voiced her confusion.

"Where’s the worm?"

The parasite that had been on the edge of the basin had suddenly disappeared.

"It’s in the gills of the fish."

Nanzhi’s face was grim.

She had been observing the parasite from the moment the crucian carp landed in the water.

As soon as the crucian carp started swimming, the parasite had swiftly snuck into its gills.

This did not seem like an ordinary parasite; it seemed more like an intelligent life form.

"Nanzhi, do you think those rats and monsters could have been influenced by these parasites?"

Compared to the idea that the small world wanted to self-destruct and create a new species, she was more inclined to believe that a new type of parasite had infected rats’ brains and then spread to humans.

The latter theory made more sense.

"Possibly."

Nanzhi’s face was rather pale.

If these parasites could infest fish, their source of food would no longer be safe.

Just to be on the safe side, they could no longer fish from the river, and the people who had been taking water from the river would need to switch to drawing from wells instead.

Ming Qin and Nanzhi sent the children away and were left feeling even more troubled.

The good news was that they might have an idea why those creatures were transformed in this way.

The bad news was that they now had one less source of food, and also had to find a way not to become infested with parasites.

Few people had the habit of boiling their drinking water.

People usually drank raw water after pouring it into a water jar from the well.

Less than an hour passed when the crucian carp in the basin began to struggle frantically as if mad, then suddenly became still. When they took a closer look, they found that the fish had turned belly-up and was bleeding from its gills.

The parasite then taunted them by swaying its body in Nanzhi’s direction, then shrunk into a ball and sank to the bottom of the basin.

Ming Qin, enraged by its behavior, wanted to pick it out with chopsticks, but Nanzhi stopped her.

"Don’t touch it, let’s wait until the others come back."

Ming Qin nodded, and the three of them moved further away from the basin.

The parasite seemed a bit disappointed and sank into the bloody water, curling up in silence.

The battle atop the city wall was fierce, and the bodies of several monsters had fallen below.

The strong smell of blood and the scent of burning flesh filled the air, inducing nausea.

After a relentless hour, the monsters finally retreated unwillingly.

Everyone was exhausted but stubbornly refused to collapse. Only when the monsters had completely disappeared into the woods did they dare to fall to the ground.

Nanzhi sent someone to the city gate.

Although Shen Wenchen didn’t understand Nanzhi’s intentions, he managed to find a monster’s corpse that had died on the city wall.

The body was charred black, and a portion of the neck had been burned to a crisp.

With a single stroke, the head was decapitated, and a long, translucent worm appeared before their eyes.
