Becoming the Villain's Discarded Wife -
Chapter 523
Chapter 523: 523
The new baby in Lin Family’s second branch was given a nickname.
He was called Wheat.
The baby was fair and clean, spending the day either sleeping or curiously looking around with his round, wide-open eyes.
If he saw his family members, he would giggling constantly or greeting them with baby sounds.
"Our little Wheat is so good-looking."
Mrs. Lin was overjoyed as she held the baby.
Aunt Guihua looked on with a hint of envy in her eyes.
"The little Wheat looks so cute, and he has a nice temperament, he doesn’t cry on ordinary days."
"Indeed, when my second son was young, he was very mischievous and exhausting. When he was little, I couldn’t even sleep. But our little Wheat is considerate; he never cries or makes a fuss."
Mrs. Lin couldn’t stop grinning as she recounted the mischievous antics of young Lin Ercheng.
Seeing his grandmother laughing, little Wheat blinked twice and suddenly giggled.
The pure laughter of a baby was the sweetest sound to adults’ ears.
"Little Wheat is laughing, little Wheat is laughing, so cute!"
Aunt Guihua’s face was filled with joy, and the two elderly sisters were intrigued.
"Sister, are you feeling better now?"
Chen Qiulan wiped Sun Cui’s body.
Luckily, the weather was getting warmer, or it could have been difficult for her to get through her confinement month.
"Much better, thank you sister-in-law."
Sun Cui looked radiant, not weak after giving birth.
All credit must go to the Lin Family’s meticulous care.
She was always put first when it came to meals at home.
Brown sugar eggs and fish soup were served daily, and tender bean sprouts were cooked separately every other day. Even though everyone else had to rely on porridge and coarse grain buns, she still had thick new rice porridge to drink.
Her good physical condition helped her recover quickly after childbirth. After half a month of confinement, she already felt that she could get down to help with work.
But her family wouldn’t allow her to get out of the house until a full month after the delivery.
"Little Wheat is the most well-behaved child I have ever seen."
While wiping Sun Cui’s back, Chen Qiulan sighed.
Her own son had not been a quiet baby and she has been reluctant to have a second child for many years, partly out of fear.
Although the Lin Family was not extremely poor in the past, they were not very wealthy either. Her mother-in-law treated her like a daughter and made sure she had enough to eat and drink. But her own son, Doudou, was a handful as a baby, either crying or shouting all the time. He woke her up six or seven times at night, and she could never get a good night’s sleep as a result.
Her husband had to work in the fields during the day, and she couldn’t bear to let him take care of the baby at night.
Life is better now, but the situation is severe, and she’s afraid of having a second child in case something happens.
After observing for two days, Liu Jie found that the group of people moved very little during the day. Occasionally, a few people would walk around the city wall, while the others sat still like wooden posts without making any movement.
"Brother Liu, it’s getting dark. Are we not going back today?"
One man looked at the gradually darkening sky and asked in a low voice.
They had been watching these people during the day and withdrawing back to the city as dusk fell for the last two days.
However, the sky was almost completely dark today, and there was no sign of leaving.
"Wait a little longer."
Watching the sunset and the moon rise, Liu Jie’s face darkened.
If he wasn’t mistaken, he had just seen some movement in that crowd.
People can’t stay still for twelve hours a day, but they have been observing for two days and saw no sign of movement. It could only mean one thing - they started moving after Liu Jie and his men left.
Just as predicted, two quarters of an hour after the sky went completely dark, the crowd that had been gathered together suddenly spread out, each person stretching and getting active.
Visibility was low at night, and Liu Jie and the rest could only carefully observe their movements by the aid of a few bonfires.
"Brother Liu, the rats are coming..."
After the last incident, the group of rats had returned to their nocturnal state, hiding away during the day.
They were all hiding on a pile of dirt, it would be troublesome if they were bitten by the rats.
"Sprinkle the powder over it, cover your faces, and make no noise."
Liu Jie passed around a gourd, leading by example by covering his face.
This was newly made medicine from Jihe Hall.
It was more effective in driving away rats.
The forest was quiet, with only the rustling sound of rats scrabbling on the ground.
As the swarm of rats crawled from all directions, those "people" with ash-grey faces looked like wolves eyeing their prey, their faces vicious.
The rats seemed to be attracted by something. They didn’t fear the fire, and crawled relentlessly towards the group of people.
Hearing the squeaking sounds of rats close to his ear, Liu Jie felt goosebumps all over his body.
These people were strange.
Seeing someone in their group catch a rat and nonchalantly snap its neck, Liu Jie’s pupils contracted and suspicion crept into his mind.
As though confirming his suspicion, the man curled his lips in a terrifying grin and stuffed a large, greasy, and smelly rat, into his mouth.
The size of the rat was slightly large, so the man could only chew on the upper half of the rat’s body, with its lower half hanging from his mouth, swaying as he chewed.
Everyone witnessed this sight, which caused an unbearable wave of nausea and discomfort.
Besides that one man, the others, as if they were partaking a feast, also began to eat the rats beneath them.
For a while, the only sounds that could be heard were the sounds of teeth tearing into flesh.
Even as a veteran who had experienced warfare, Liu Jie found it hard to stomach this scene.
In the toughest times in the city, there were vagabonds who fantasized about surviving off these rats.
But even then, they would skin and roast the rats before eating.
Didn’t they know what the rats were like?
Yet that group of people just shoved them into their mouths...
Liu Jie felt nauseous. But before he could react, he noticed someone coming towards them.
"We’re compromised, retreat —"
Liu Jie quickly gave the command, and everyone began to retreat.
The night was dark and the path slippery, someone was bound to reveal their location accidentally.
"Hurry!"
Liu Jie was anxious, and could only order his men to retreat while he stayed back to cover them.
The man who was approaching was not simple either.
His face was pale, with a pair of murky eyes fixed in the direction of Liu Jie.
He had sensed something was wrong when the rats emerged from all directions just now.
Because the rats seemed deliberately avoiding a certain area.
"You can’t run away —"
A sinister voice echoed out, causing Liu Jie’s pupils to contract sharply, narrowly avoiding the oncoming blade.
The man moved incredibly fast, ghostlike in nature, giving one no time to dodge.
After just five moves, Liu Jie was already bleeding.
"Stay —"
The man was closing in, his terrifying face magnified in Liu Jie’s eyes. Liu Jie could even clearly see the black veins pulsing frighteningly under his skin.
