Becoming the Villain's Discarded Wife -
Chapter 499: The Way Back to the City
Chapter 499: Chapter 499: The Way Back to the City
Shen Yuntian and his group finally returned.
At first, he thought Xu Tianci’s decision to send him back to Yan City was a bit exaggerated.
Yet, when he saw how they bundled up several bags of grains with hemp rope, and then casually slung them over their shoulders, Shen Yuntian subconsciously swallowed.
Although he prided himself on his own strength, compared to their stance, he did admit he was not a match.
After four people distributed twenty bags of grain, only two boxes of herbs remained on the ground.
Shen Yuntian did not want to lose face, lifting them up with one hand each was still manageable.
They headed towards the city gate, where the ground was covered with accumulated snow. No one had tread upon it for several days, leaving a hard crust on top of the snow pile.
The five of them walked with one foot deep and the other shallow, nearly tripping over something several times and falling to the ground.
"There is a cart over there."
After walking about four miles, one person suddenly paced towards something on the side.
Underneath the snow was a handcart, already coated with a layer of ice. But, judging from a quick glance, it didn’t seem broken.
"Check if it can still be used. If so, we can surely put it to use."
Another person commented.
Although they could make the journey while carrying the stuff, it was now past midday. Given their current pace, they might not make it to their destination before dark.
Things were not peaceful here.
After struggling for a while, they were finally able to pull out the cart that was stuck to the icy ground.
Luckily, it was not broken. With a bit of fixing, it was still usable.
Snow began to flutter down from the sky again.
The weather did not show any signs of change even at a time it should’ve been melting the snow. It was enough to cause anxiety.
Things were about to become chaotic in Yan City.
No matter how they patrolled, the rats always managed to find places to hide. With the rainwater wash and the covering of accumulated snow, the effects of the barely effective Five Poison powder were completely depleted.
For a time, the city was filled with wailing and screaming.
Especially those who had sick family members at home, they were now even more panicked.
Liu Jie and his squad divided into several groups and went for support everywhere. In just a short half day, the streets were full of rat corpses. The pungent smell was even more intense, spreading all over.
Two young men from the Lin family also left the Residence. Each of them held a long knife in their hand, looking like they were readied for battle.
Worried about the safety of her family, Nanzhi gathered everyone together for fear of more chaos.
"All the Medical Halls within the city have been nearly emptied now, where would we find any rat repellent herbs..."
Lin’s mother was a little anxious, pacing in the courtyard.
What should they do now?
"Wife, don’t worry, it will be fine." Lin’s father’s head was spinning from her pacing. Knowing that his wife was worried about everyone’s safety, he comforted her.
There must be a solution. He didn’t believe they couldn’t get through this crisis.
Just a few days ago, many of the children in the city fell ill. They’re better now, aren’t they?
As for encountering those mice, they just needed to kill them and be careful not to get bitten...
Sun Cui’s pregnancy was getting more advanced. Plus, with the cold weather, she had not been allowed out of the house since she had arrived.
"Little sister-in-law, you should stay inside. Don’t come out."
Sun Cui rubbed her sore waist, and seeing Nanzhi’s under-eye circles, she felt a twinge of heartache: "Fatty, you also need to rest. There is Liu Jie and your brother in the city, there will be no problems."
Poor little sister-in-law, she was pregnant and still needed to worry about matters in the city all day.
It looked like she had lost a lot of weight.
"Yes, Fatty, you need to rest properly, even for the sake of the child in your belly."
Chen Qiulan shook her head while sitting aside.
Fatty worked really hard these days.
Only, she didn’t know how Shen Wenchen was doing...
"I’m fine." Nanzhi managed a smile.
She should help out as much as she could.
"Why haven’t Doudou and Maomao come over yet?"
She had yet to see the kids in their house. Chen Qiulan wrinkled her brows.
A servant had gone to call them just a moment ago, why hadn’t they returned yet?
Lin Zihan and Lin Jian, who were following the servant, felt like their heads were about to explode.
What to do?
They initially thought that Zhiyu and Xiaomi would probably be back in the city before dinner, so all they need to do was to help delay lunch time by saying everyone was studying in the study room and that the servant should just send the meal there.
However, just two hours after they left, though they managed to get through lunch, now suddenly this had happened.
What were they to do now?
Those two half-grown boys were straining their brains but couldn’t come up with a solution. They could only try to drag their feet as much as they could along the way to buy more time.
At this moment, Shen Zhiyu and Xiaomi were waiting at the entrance of the village for everyone to finish packing before they returned to the city together.
Most of the mice in the village had been dealt with, and the rest could be handled by the villagers. The soldiers no longer needed to stay.
Despite the progress in other villages being slower than this one, during the days Shen Wenchen was unconscious, everyone had managed to deal with most of the issues.
They just needed to leave behind ten or so men.
After arranging for someone to inform all the villages about the return, Shen Wenchen and Chi Sheng started to prepare the things they needed to bring back to the city.
Herbs in the city were almost used up and since there were no effective mouse repellents, they were ultimately forced to rely on the Second Master’s prescription.
"This is the prescription. During these days, I was only able to prepare these few bags of medicinal powder, and I guess you will need to prepare one more batch after you return to the city."
Second Master didn’t have much to say. Giving the prescription was the end of it, but he felt a bit heartbroken over his herbs.
The medicine they procured during their previous trip to the mountain was very precious. Now...
He glanced at Yuanbao beside him and felt like crying.
His niece was simply unbearable. The rare snake mold he’d kept in store was already scarce. Now, the last one had been found by this little girl.
She truly was like a cotton-padded jacket with holes!
"Thank you, Second Master,"
Shen Wenchen said solemnly, "Once everything in the city is settled, I will definitely request a reward for you."
There are pests in other places as well, but there is only one person like Second Master. Most places probably still lack an effective way to get rid of these pests. By giving him the prescription, Second Master was indicating his willingness to spread it.
This prescription was worth more than a thousand taels of gold.
"There’s no need." Second Master waved his hand, wanting Shen Wenchen to take Yuanbao away, but was afraid Chi Sheng and Ming Qin would beat him, so he just held back his tears.
"Look at you." Chi Sheng gave Second Master a punch on his shoulder before he looked at his wife and daughter.
"I’ll be back as soon as possible. You guys need to be careful. Wait for my return."
"Alright."
Ming Qin held Yuanbao, her eyes full of affection.
Seeing that everyone was ready, Shen Wenchen put the two children into the carriage on the side. He then got on the horse and announced, "Roll out!"
Down the road south of Kyoto, a woman rode at a gallop. Her snow-white fox fur blended with the woods, with her jet-black hair fluttering in the cold air.
