Becoming the Villain's Discarded Wife -
Chapter 490: Delivering a Letter
Chapter 490: Chapter 490: Delivering a Letter
Adai cocked his head and looked at Nanzhi, and lightly pecked at her fingers, before finally spreading his wings and flying out of the window.
"Madam..."
Seeing Nanzhi looking a little worn out, Liu Jie hesitated, unsure whether he should report the situation.
After a little thought, he decided to speak up.
"There are too many children in the city whose fever is not receding, and there are troublemakers in many medicine shops and medical halls..."
"Send someone to mediate and treat the offenders according to the law."
"Yes."
Liu Jie nodded, turned and left the study.
Nanzhi could only feel a throbbing pain at her temples, her mind in chaos.
Xiaohe had disappeared these past few days, if he could be found, perhaps there might still be hope for the children in the city...
Moreover, it had been almost a month since Shen Wenchen left.
She could only hope that Adai would return quickly.
The red-billed sparrow spread its wings and flew straight to the village outside the city, the silence along the way was as still as death.
There was not a single bird’s chirp or insect buzz.
Adai sensed something was off, his small eyes darted around observing. He could only see that the vegetation that had been covered with snow now rotted into a muddy mess. The few trees that still stood were long dead, barely supported above the mud pile.
Adai let out a low chirp, not wanting to look any further.
The village had been peaceful these past few days. All the men who had returned seven days ago with sturdy bodies had recovered, only a few of weaker constitution were still coughing.
"Has he not woken up yet?"
Ming Qin saw Wang Jingzhi’s emerge from the courtyard with a solemn face and had a guess.
"Yes."
Wang Jingzhi nodded, his heart filled with despair.
Auntie Li had already recovered and could move around, but only Big Brother Shen showed no signs of improvement.
Everything seemed normal according to his pulse reading, and Second Master tried many circles with the poisonous insect.
He only fell short of prying open Brother Shen’s mouth to inspect his tongue, but he still couldn’t identify any issue.
Despite having known the answer, Ming Qin sighed upon hearing Wang Jingzhi’s confirmation.
The system didn’t lie, but could they continue to persist?
She didn’t want to give in, but how could she fight against fate...
"Adai! Adai!"
Yuanbao, Xiaoqi and Yueyue were drying firewood in the yard, when they heard a bird chirping. Yuanbao instantly looked up with delight.
She hadn’t heard a bird’s chirping since it started raining.
The little bird circled overhead with a conspicuous red beak.
Yuanbao had seen Adai with Nanzhi, so she recognized him.
Guessing that it might be a letter from Nanzhi, the little girl was very excited.
She just raised her hand to call the bird down, when she heard a whistling sound and a sharp rock flew towards her from the top of the wall on the side.
Xiaoqi was quick, he dropped the firewood in his hand to intercept, successfully blocking the incoming stone.
"Xiaoqi, what are you doing?" Zhuzi leaned on the wall, angrily shouting at Xiaoqi.
As soon as this bird entered the village, he caught sight of it and had been tracking it, waiting for an opportunity to shoot it down.
But Xiaoqi had spoiled his good plans!
Xiaoqi coldly glanced at him. Zhuzi, who was previously high-spirited, suddenly went silent.
Erniu, who was at his side, was also startled by his gaze and backed away quietly.
"What, what are you looking at..."
Zhuzi felt his face burning up. Erniu sneaking away made him more furious, but seeing Xiaoqi picking up another piece of firewood, he could only glare at him once before leaving in a huff with his lackeys.
Adai landed on Yuanbao’s hand, affectionately rubbed her cheek, then stuck out his butt and stretched his legs, signaling her to take out the letter.
Yuanbao was amused by his antics and giggled. Yueyue also laughed until her eyes squinted.
Watching the two girls happy, the hostility in Xiaoqi melted away.
"Yueyue, Brother Xiaoqi, let’s go find my daddy."
Yuanbao held the letter but did not dare to open it on her own, she tucked it into her little purse and took the two to her house.
Chi Sheng had also fallen ill recently and had high fever for three days before he got through it. Although the fever had subsided, he always claimed discomfort and wanted Ming Qin to stay with him.
Now, Ming Qin had only been gone for a moment and Chi Sheng was lively, stretching and exercising in the room.
Of course, the days with his wife by his side were delightful.
"Daddy! Daddy!"
Just as he was stretching, he heard his daughter’s voice growing closer. He now had no time to slip back into bed before he heard the door being pushed open, and in the next second, the three children were standing at the door.
"Daddy, you’re pretending!"
Before she finished the word ’sick’, Yuanbao’s mouth was covered by Chi Sheng who immediately ushered her into the room.
"What’s wrong, my dear Nana?"
Chi Sheng placed Yuanbao on his knee, stretched out his hand to rub her little face, and then tenderly asked.
"Mother sent a letter through Adai!"
Yuanbao didn’t mind her hair being tousled, she simply took out the small letter from her small purse with childish speech.
Chi Sheng was initially surprised, but seeing there was no rain outside the window, he guessed that Yuanbao was referring to Nanzhi, and accepted the letter.
However, after reading the text on the paper, Chi Sheng’s brow furrowed, and the smile on his face faded.
"Daddy, what’s wrong?"
Seeing her father’s face change suddenly, Yuanbao asked in confusion.
Could something have happened to mother?
"Nana, be good. You, Xiaoqi, and Yueyue stay here. Daddy needs to go to the main house."
Chi Sheng no longer cared about faking illness and quickly put on his coat to leave for the main house.
The three children looked at each other, puzzled.
Yuanbao furrowed her brows, sensing the situation was complicated.
In the yard, Wang Jingzhi and Second Master were busy sorting the medical herbs in the basket.
"Old Second, how is Shen Wenchen?"
"Big Brother?"
Second Master raised an eyebrow. Seeing Chi Sheng standing up right looking nothing like his frail state in the morning, he found it amusing.
He truly deserved to be the Head.
Feeling embarrassed under his stare, Chi Sheng had to admit his act of faking illness was ridiculous. But given the urgency of the matter, he didn’t have time to mess around with him.
"Jingzhi, has Shen Wenchen not woken up yet?"
Knowing that his buddy was uncontrollable, Chi Sheng quickly changed the topic and no longer paid attention to Second Master.
"He hasn’t woken up, and shows no sign of waking up."
Wang Jingzhi told the truth.
"Has anything happened?"
"The city is hit with an epidemic, many children are suffering from high fevers that resist treatment, and many rats have invaded the city. It’s a major disaster."
Chi Sheng spoke with a serious expression.
The rodent burrow in the valley had been destroyed, and the village hadn’t suffered from the rat plague since, with only occasional rats scurrying around.
Most of the soldiers stationed in the village had been sent to other villages. Now Shen Wenchen was still unconscious, things were truly urgent.
"The city is in trouble?"
The color drained from Wang Jingzhi’s face as he thought of his wife.
