Becoming the Villain's Discarded Wife -
Chapter 483
Chapter 483: Chapter 483
The rain washed the earth, sweeping away the accumulated snow, exposing the not yet fully incinerated rat carcasses amidst the fields.
The villagers fell silent at the sight of the charred bones.
The horrid stench concealed under the thick layer of snow surfaced as the rain washed it away, enveloping the entire village.
Amidst a heavy downpour and a darkening sky, the resounding sound of falling rain seemed to suffocate people.
"General, it’s dangerous up the mountain, perhaps we shouldn’t proceed!"
The old hunter, accustomed to roaming the woods year around cautioned. The mountain covered in snow and muck, coupled with the ceaseless rain, held ominous signs for those who dared to tread.
Furthermore, rats fear water and this rain could potentially harm them. They could wait a little longer as the risks of venturing up the mountains at the moment were too high.
"Big Brother Shen, let’s wait a bit longer."
Aze added from the side.
The field lining the small path had turned into a muddy mess due to the rain, and the water on the ground began to show signs of freezing.
Scaling the mountain in such a situation was far from an ideal option.
"Wenchen, let’s wait a bit longer."
Standing on the side, Ming Qin glanced at the sky and spoke softly.
"Preceptor." Shen Wenchen’s eyes were resolute, he didn’t respond to her words.
Since he now understood that this miniature world had given up, their only solution was survival.
If they were to face a rat plague, they would exterminate the mice together, if their crops couldn’t survive in the fields, they would co-develop a solution for soil cultivation. Now, he wanted to explore the mountain, despite the heavy rainfall.
He ought to and he must protect the citizens of this village.
Ming Qin stood dumbfounded, looking at Shen Wenchen, she felt somewhat dazed.
Was she the same five years ago?
"Let’s go together."
After dressing in a straw raincoat and bamboo hat, Chi Sheng solemnly said.
Ming Qin had left Qing Fenghan for the people, now it was his turn.
"Big Brother, Big Brother Shen, this is powder medicine. Just pour it into their holes. If the rain on the mountain is heavy, mix it with wine."
Ercheng passed two big bags of the poisonous powder.
This poison, mixed with water, was a guaranteed death sentence for the rats.
"Alright!"
Just as they were preparing to ascend the mountain, a clap of thunder resonated in their ears, as if the heavens were roaring in fury.
"Let’s go!"
Shen Wenchen’s expression was calm, unafraid.
"Let’s go!"
The crowd moved like a wave towards the mountains, the flickering flames in the pitch black night appearing particularly bright.
Nanzhi just endured indescribable pain, but now it suddenly vanished, and she felt an inexplicable lightness, as if she were walking on clouds.
She had survived.
Just now, she thought she saw those two people again.
The ones who shot an arrow at her amidst the disaster-stricken crowd three years ago.
No wonder Xiaohe warned her to be careful.
Even though she was dying from hunger and disease before, it felt like the plot wanted to get rid of her, so what about that incident three years back?
Why did those two people want to kill her?
"Mom, how are you feeling?"
Shen Zhiyu looked as if she had just been pulled out of the water, her small pale face now surrounded by frighteningly red rims.
"I am fine."
Nanzhi’s voice was hoarse as she lovingly stroked Zhiyu’s head in comfort.
"Go change your clothes quickly, don’t catch a cold."
The stubborn look in his eyes, he shook his head not willing to step away from her.
He was scared.
She feared her mother might suddenly fall into a coma again, like before.
"Behave."
Nanzhi frowned, wanting to say more, but feeling a sudden tickle in her throat, she broke into a severe cough.
"Zhiyu, be good. Go change your clothes. Your mother will be fine."
Sun Cui had been careful when she arrived because of her pregnancy, and with Lin Ercheng sheltering her from the rain, she was the only one in the entire family who hadn’t been soaked.
Everyone else had already gone to the side room to change into dry clothes, leaving her naturally to care for Nanzhi.
Not wanting to aggravate Nanzhi’s anger, Shen Zhiyu nodded, wiped away the tears streaming down her face, and left to change her clothes.
"Thank you so much, sister-in-law."
Nanzhi felt a tad guilty.
That her sister-in-law, who was pregnant, had come to take care of her made her feel uncomfortable.
Everytime she encountered trouble, it made the whole family worry, a thought she found unbearable.
While she appreciated the concern of her loved ones, being the source of their constant fear and concern filled her with remorse.
"Don’t say such things."
Sun Cui shook her head, testing the heater next to her.
Finding it still had some sparks left, she then proceeded to take a kettle from the stove and poured some warm water from it.
"Drink some water first so you don’t choke."
"Ok."
The warm water rolled down her throat, and Nanzhi felt her hitherto cloudy mind gradually clearing.
"As long as you’re okay."
Sun Cui looked at her younger sister-in-law’s distressed face, feeling a pang of sympathy.
She didn’t understand the complete picture.
But seeing her young sister-in-law suffering so often left her heartbroken.
Poor Zhiyu, having to go through so much at such a young age.
Nanzhi felt a prickling sensation around her eyes, a strong urge to cry but she held it back, not wanting her family to see and worry.
"How is Ma Po doing?"
"Ma Po just fainted in the yard. Xiaomi took her to the side room, and she’s changed into dry clothes. But we’ll still need to give her some ginger tea later, afraid she might catch a cold."
Nanzhi nodded, wanting to say something but feeling as though something was blocking her throat, she couldn’t utter a word.
"You should rest."
After giving her reassuring words, Sun Cui poured her another cup of warm water.
Consumed by the torrential rain, the sound of rain striking the roof tiles was deafening. Everyone in the city, without exception, was sheltering in their homes, attentively listening to the change in weather through the rain.
If it rained in winter, and as torrentially as this, it meant a change in weather was imminent.
It was also raining in Kyoto, but not as heavily as in Yan City.
From the moment the heavy rain started, Shen Miaomiao’s heart was in her throat.
Seeing the rain teetering on the verge of turning into a downpour, she was filled with anxiety.
Ever since he had visited the palace last time, Ten-Two had not returned.
Right now, the city was in utter chaos, and she had no idea what was happening.
Just as she was engulfed in worry, she heard the sound of horse hooves mixed with the rain outside the gate.
Shen Miaomiao’s heart leaped at this. No sooner had she reached the hall than she saw the manor gate wide open, and Ten-Two, soaking wet, was standing there.
"Miaomiao."
Seeing her rushing towards him, Ten-Two felt a sense of relief washing over him. He abruptly lost all his strength and collapsed to the ground.
The smile on Shen Miaomiao’s face froze, and tears instantly welled up in her eyes. The maids and servants rushed forward to support him and took him back to the room.
Right now, Ten-Two’s cheeks were gaunt, his eyes were ringed with dark circles, and the uneven stubble on his jaw made him look incredibly haggard.
Shen Miaomiao held back her tears while changing his clothes. She had someone stoke the warmth of the fireplace. When she still couldn’t keep the tears back, they started rolling down her cheeks.
The raindrops fell to the ground, stirring up a high mist. Numerous tiny black figures scuttled through it, yet not a soul was startled.
