Becoming the Villain's Discarded Wife -
Chapter 475: Saving People
Chapter 475: Chapter 475: Saving People
Its mouth was still smeared with blood, and seeing Xiaoqi stare at it, the enormous rat made an eerie smile.
Despite being a teenager, Xiaoqi was brave enough to face wild rabbits and fowl, charging forward with his bow and arrow. But upon encountering this weird rat, his already pale face turned even paler.
"Squeak squeak squeak—"
In a stalemate between man and rat, another similar squeak echoed from somewhere else.
This creepy giant rat just took a deep look at Xiaoqi and then disappeared.
Only then did Xiaoqi rush to check on Aunt Li’s breathing.
Aunt Li’s eyes were tightly closed, her face devoid of colour, her neck was a mess of flesh and blood, and blood was still oozing out.
"Aunt Li! Aunt Li!"
Xiaoqi called out her name a few times without getting any reply. Only then did he carefully place his finger under her nose to check for any breath.
Feeling a faint breath, only then did Xiaoqi’s clenched expression ease a bit.
At least she’s still alive.
Without further ado, Xiaoqi took out a small medicine bottle from his pocket, sprinkled the powder on Aunt Li’s wound, and then tied it up with a piece of his own clothing.
The wound’s bleeding only stopped after this quick treatment. He then helped her onto the bed and cautiously searched for any traces of rats around the room.
Xiaoqi could only perform basic wound treatment, they would need the second-in-command or Brother Wang for further care.
Wang Jingzhi, who was with Shen Wenchen’s party going into the mountains, suddenly felt an intense itch at the tip of his nose and absent-mindedly rubbed it.
"Doctor Wang, is something the matter?"
Someone saw his furrowed brows and asked with concern.
"Nothing really, just feeling an itch in my nose."
Wang Jingzhi rubbed the tip of his nose again while explaining.
Internally though, he was puzzled. He always believed in the superstition that an itchy nose indicates someone thinking about him. Did someone miss him back home?
Thinking of his wife, a sweet feeling surged in Wang Jingzhi’s heart and his ears turned red.
"Doctor Wang, is it your sister-in-law missing you?" a younger lad grinned.
"Stop talking nonsense."
The old hunter cast a sideway glance at him and smacked him on the back.
Smarting from the pat, the young man bared his teeth in pain.
"Doctor Wang is with us to look for herbs in the mountains, what are you laughing about here?"
"Uncle, my bad."
The young boy pleaded with a pained expression, which lightened the mood in the team.
Back in the village, Xiaoqi searched all over but couldn’t find Wang Jingzhi. Instead, he noticed that the rat-repelling powder in many corners was tampered with.
Worried, Xiaoqi decided to quickly find Chi Sheng but accidentally bumped into the second-in-command.
The second-in-command and Yuanbao were heading to the main courtyard but were caught off guard by Xiaoqi’s sudden collision, making them stagger back a few steps.
Caught up in the accident, Yuanbao, while holding the medicine box, fell and her clean little neck was smeared with mud.
"Xiaoqi, you almost killed me!" The second-in-command clutched his aching chest and grimaced.
This normally cool-headed boy was exceptionally reckless, almost breaking his ribs.
"Second Command, Aunt Li is in trouble."
Just as the second-in-command was about to issue a rebuke, he stopped upon seeing the look on Xiaoqi’s face.
The usually cold Xiaoqi had tears in his eyes, his face no longer bore the usual indifference, but was replaced by a full face of anxiety.
"Second Command, there’s a rat in the courtyard, Aunt Li was injured, I...I managed to stop her bleeding, but I don’t know how to treat her..."
As Xiaoqi spoke, his tears streamed down freely. The sight of Xiaoqi crying so hard made Yuanbao feel upset.
Braother Xiaoqi wasn’t like this before.
He only had red eyes when Sister Yueyue was ill.
Dad always said Brother Xiaoqi was cold-hearted and didn’t care about anyone except Yueyue.
But today was so strange.
"Xiaoqi, stop crying first, lead me there."
The second-in-command’s expression was complicated. Looking at the tearful Xiaoqi, he just patted his shoulder.
Xiaoqi wiped away his tears, nodded, and started to lead the way.
The second-in-command, worried that Yuanbao couldn’t keep up, carried her in one arm and held the medicine box in the other. They quickly ran towards the courtyard.
All the other patients in the courtyard were still asleep, and the two doctors supposed to be in charge were nowhere to be found.
"This morning, Doctor Wang told me that he was going to the mountains with the patrol team to look for herbs, but there should still be two other doctors here."
The second commander looked at the freshly sprinkled medicine on the ground and the still fresh blood stains, his brows furrowed even tighter.
"This morning while I was fetching water, I noticed rat tracks by the courtyard. That’s when I followed them straight here.
But no matter how much I knocked on the door, Aunt Li did not respond. Out of desperation, I climbed over the wall and found her lying on the floor, and a large rat in her room."
Xiaoqi managed to choke out the words despite his rough voice, explaining how he stumbled upon everything.
He was well looked after in the village and Aunt Li was the kindest to him.
He often felt that he had the capabilities to protect others, but as it turned out, he was still helpless.
"How did the rat get in?"
The second-in-command frowned deeply. Looking at the uneven colour of the medicine on the ground, he was puzzled.
His medicine had always been effective, especially considering it contained snake scales and bones. Even if a rat were smarter, it would still think twice before trying to pass through it.
"When I got here, I found that there was a gap in the medicinal powder by the window, and there were many incomplete areas in the house. I then filled them up."
Xiaoqi explained.
"No wonder..."
"Commander, how is Aunt Li now?"
Xiaoqi, with a hoarse voice, asked.
"Don’t worry. She just lost too much blood. You stopped the bleeding in time; she’ll be okay."
"That’s good...That’s good..."
Xiaoqi muttered softly.
Watching him sigh in relief, Yuanbao found it strange.
Brother Xiaoqi now seemed a bit better than before.
It was as if a wooden statue had come to life.
"Yuanbao, bring the medicine box here."
"Oh, oh."
Coming back to her senses, Yuanbao hurriedly handed over the medicine box. Then, she joined Xiaoqi watching the second-in-command treating Aunt Li.
"Here, this... this is for you."
After hesitating a bit, Yuanbao took out a small handkerchief from her pocket.
Looking at the handkerchief handed over to him, Xiaoqi was taken aback and seemed a little baffled.
Yuanbao hadn’t paid any attention to him for a long time.
"Take it, wipe your tears."
Yuanbao pouted her lips and turned her head away as if ignoring him.
"Thanks, thank you."
Xiaoqi took the handkerchief, muttering quietly.
Yuanbao finally noticed him.
