Chapter 472: What if, He Succeeds?
Chapter 472: Chapter 472: What if, He Succeeds?
The person on the roof seems to have also realized that they’d made too much noise. They stood still and didn’t take another step for a while.
Mother and son raised their ears, silently staring upwards without uttering another word.
Almost half a quarter of an hour passed before Ma Po brought Calming Soup into the yard. Only then did Nanzhi and Shen Zhiyu relax a bit.
"Madam, the soup is here."
Upon speaking, Ma Po placed the Calming Soup on the table. She was about to help Nanzhi get out of bed when she noticed Shen Zhiyu also wrapped in blankets.
"Why is the young master also here?"
Ma Po paused, noticing the dark circles under his eyes and guessing that he couldn’t sleep and came to find his mother, she softened her voice.
"Young master, don’t worry about the chief. Now that the weather is cold, you should also rest early. Let me go and get you some more soup."
Before Shen Zhiyu could refuse, Ma Po was already wrapped in her cloak and hurried out of the yard.
Lately, Nanzhi often woke up in the night, and after repeated occurrences, she had lost quite a bit of weight. As a straightforward resolution, Ma Po asked the kitchen staff to prepare Calming Soup that she kept warm at night and brought from the kitchen whenever she couldn’t sleep.
If the soup wasn’t used at night, it would save for everyone to drink together at lunch the next day.
Nanzhi, who hated trouble, contemplated how to find more food during the cold nights when she couldn’t sleep. She kept this up until the child in her belly was tired and finally fell into a deep sleep.
As a result, these past few days, other than Nanzhi, the sleep of everyone else in the residence improved significantly.
Regardless, today Ma Po intended to hurry and bring the soup, so she could rest properly for the night.
Nanzhi was at a loss for words, and Zhiyu was blushing.
Ma Po loved children and cared deeply for the ones in the house.
Although the household tried to economize on food, clothing, and general expenses, she always found ways to prepare treats for the kiddos.
Before mother and son could relax completely, faint footsteps from outside the window unexpectedly stiffened the smile on Nanzhi’s face.
Could it be that they didn’t mistakenly hear the noise earlier?
Did someone really break into their residence?
But who could it be?
Before Nanzhi was able to interrogate, the footsteps outside the window became more distinct, followed by the sound of the house door being pushed open.
Nanzhi went pale, and her heart sank.
After all, she’d only offended a few merchants when she opened her shop. Could it be that they held a grudge and were here for revenge?
It shouldn’t be.
Could it be Shen Wenchen’s enemy?
But he’s not in the city right now, so seeking revenge shouldn’t involve them...
The door opened, and from a distance Nanzhi could barely see the white curve of the intruder’s robe through the dim candlelight.
As the footsteps got closer, Shen Zhiyu’s little face tightened as he stretched his arms out and tried to shield Nanzhi behind him.
Nanzhi was moved, but swiftly tucked the youngster back under the blanket. She then stammered, "Who are you! What do you want!"
The stranger seemed taken aback by her question, paused for a moment, and then walked straight towards them.
As he moved, the white corner of his robe that had caught Nanzhi’s eye gradually turned into a long robe and a thin, slender waist, until she could finally see the intruder’s face. That’s when she and Zhiyu finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Thankfully, the intruder wasn’t a bad guy.
Xiaohe wore a bewildered expression, seeing them huddled in bed looking on guard. Finally realizing the situation, he touched the tip of his nose.
"You... You haven’t slept yet?"
He said with a sheepish grin.
Having not seen him for a while, Xiaohe was still dressed as he was three years ago, with the only difference being that he looked thinner and frailer.
"Brother Xiaohe!"
Having not seen him for so long, Shen Zhiyu rushed out of bed upon recognizing him.
Just as he was about to hug him, the cold aura around Xiaohe pushed him away.
"Don’t come closer, I’m too cold. You might catch a cold." Xiaohe waved him off. His eyes then landed on the bowl of soup on the table, and he asked eagerly,
"Um... Can I drink this soup?"
Though his question was directed at Nanzhi, his eyes were glued to the bowl, making it impossible to refuse.
"Go ahead."
Nanzhi said with a smile.
Upon her approval, Xiaohe quickly picked up the bowl and drained it in one gulp.
He’d spent too long in that place. Enough was enough.
Today, having finally escaped, he certainly wasn’t going to obey that old man’s orders and return.
"Xiaohe, where have you been all these days?"
Nanzhi watched him for a while, feeling as if a misty veil enshrouded him.
"I’ve been cultivating." As Xiaohe moved, a thin layer of ice that had formed on his robe shattered and fell to the ground, soon turning into a puddle of cold water.
"So have you completed your cultivation?"
Nanzhi asked, overcome with curiosity.
"Not yet."
Xiaohe answered honestly.
"I’ve only stabilized my God Soul. I’m still far from recovery, but if I continue to hide and cultivate, this world won’t last much longer."
He is the Heavenly Path of this world. The world’s fate is unstable, and if he, as the Heavenly Path, is also absent, this small world will collapse in no time.
The old man’s theory was that this was just a small world, and since its original storyline had gone awry, and he unintentionally attracted so much trouble, they could simply leave this place.
But he could not resign to this.
He couldn’t accept his prior six failures.
He’d realized that even if the story collapsed, it didn’t matter.
But this small world is his, and he wished to keep it.
He couldn’t believe that he couldn’t drive those people out and keep this world’s fate to himself.
Nanzhi hesitated, somewhat taken aback.
Gazing at Xiaohe, she felt a little dizzy.
"I’m the Heavenly Path of this world. Although the storyline here is all mixed up, it’s still the place where I was born. I want to preserve it. Otherwise, my previous six attempts were all in vain."
Xiaohe scratched his head, bearing the naivety of a young boy on his face.
He was just a small bead that the old man had picked up while traveling in the void.
Probably out of boredom, he’d casually chosen a small world and thrown himself in, hoping that the fate of this small world would lead him to opportunities.
Even though he indeed became the Heavenly Path and could leave with him for the Three Thousand Worlds, he still wanted to give it a try.
This small world had nurtured him for countless years, and despite his six failures, the people here were still decent.
Recollecting his experiences in the six previous lives, he felt somewhat reluctant to let go.
The Three Thousand Worlds might be better, but no matter how good they are, they wouldn’t really belong to him.
What if...what if he succeeded?
