Becoming the Villain's Discarded Wife -
Chapter 46_1
Chapter 46: 46_1
The pancakes from noon were still there, Nanzhi simply warmed them up and cooked a pot of soup before calling Gougou for a meal.
Gougou held a pancake in one hand and a soup bowl in the other, his legs swinging under the bench, enjoying his meal.
"Do you want to stay home tomorrow morning while mom goes to collect the nets by the river, or go play with Brother Doudou?" Nanzhi asked Gougou who was obediently eating his meal. She planned to go out early tomorrow, collect the nets, and rest for the day. She had caught several dozen river clams these past days and could clean and dry them tomorrow morning. She’d make Gougou fish soup at noon, and maybe fry a plate of river shrimp.
"Gougou wants to go with mom to catch bugs." Gougou took a sip of soup, swallowed the pancake in his mouth and hastily replied.
"Good, mom will call Gougou in the morning." Nanzhi nodded. It was good to get everything done in one trip, and morning temperatures were much more comfortable than those at noon and in the afternoon. Taking Gougou along would be no problem.
After dinner, Nanzhi washed the dishes and accompanied Gougou to wash and settle into bed.
Just as the sky began to lighten, Nanzhi heard someone knocking on the door while she was still in a daze. Rubbing her sleepy eyes and splashing her face with cold water, she finally woke up completely.
The courtyard outside was quiet and for a moment, Nanzhi doubted whether she’d dreamed about someone knocking at the door when she heard the knocks again.
"Who is it?" Nanzhi frowned, pondering. Who would knock on her door so early in the morning?
Could it be Ms. Wu causing trouble again?
But remembering Ms. Wu’s pitiful state the day before as she cried over Shi Tou, Nanzhi dismissed that thought. Ms. Wu would have her hands full, she wouldn’t have time for trouble.
Could it be Shen Miaomiao?
Nanzhi subconsciously looked at the sky and then immediately negated the idea, thinking Shen Miaomiao wouldn’t be up this early.
"Who is it?"
"Fat Girl, open the door."
Recognizing the voice, Nanzhi opened the door complaining, "I’m a mother now, can’t you stop calling me Fat Girl? Can’t you call me Little Sister instead?"
Lin Dacheng chuckled, ruffling Nanzhi’s hair fondly, "Got all high and mighty because you’re a mother now? You don’t even like being called Fat Girl by your brothers anymore?"
Nanzhi swatted Lin Dacheng’s roaming hand from her head, stepping aside, "Why are you guys here? Is everything okay at home?"
"We’re fine."
Lin Ercheng waved his hand, "Mom asked us to come over to help you fix up the house so you and Gougou won’t have to..."
Suddenly noticing the state of Nanzhi’s house, Ercheng choked on his words, his eyes filled with shock.
He rubbed his eyes unbelievingly and stuttered, "Wha... Fat Girl, how come your house is untouched?"
Lin Dacheng, getting annoyed with his younger brother blocking the doorway, stepped forward to ask a question, yet he too noticed the pristine condition of Nanzhi’s house.
"Fat Girl, did you and Gougou fix up the house overnight?"
Upon hearing her brother’s question, Nanzhi rolled her eyes, silently exasperated, thinking some aspects of her brother and her father were sadly similar.
Like how their minds worked differently than hers.
Lin Ercheng reacted first, closing the courtyard door before turning to Nanzhi, "Fatty, what’s going on with your house?"
When they first arrived, they had seen how every other house in Lihua Village had collapsed. But here at his own sister’s place, it looked as if it hadn’t been touched by an earthquake at all. Not a single tile seemed to be broken.
"I have no idea." Nanzhi shrugged and lifted her chin, saying, "Perhaps it’s the divine protection of my departed husband."
Upon hearing this, Lin Dacheng looked up into the gray sky with a reflective gaze, then solemnly said, "Brother-in-law, I didn’t realize you were such a capable spirit."
Seeing both his big brother and sister with their solemn expressions, Lin Ercheng could only sigh inwardly. Sometimes, he felt like he might not be his father’s biological son - why was he the only normal one in the family?
Spit, spit, spit, it’s definitely an issue with Fatty and big brother.
"Mom, why didn’t you wake me up?" Gougou, barely dressed and still half asleep, came out of the house and stood on the stairs asking. One of his little hands was continuously rubbing his eyes, trying to clear his vision. It seemed to him, there were three Mommys, two of which were rather tall.
Nanzhi chuckled awkwardly; they had been woken up by the two elder brothers after all.
"Uncle?" As Gougou became more certain of the identity of the two men standing next to Nanzhi, he called out dubiously.
"Ah, my dear nephew." Lin Dacheng, looking at Gougou’s baffled expression, felt a surge of fondness. He stepped forward, picked up Gougou in one swoop, and started playing with him, making Gougou giggle non-stop.
"Did Uncle come to play with Gougou?"
"Yes, Uncles missed our Gougou." Lin Ercheng took Gougou from his older brother’s hands and spun him around a few times, causing Gougou to laugh uncontrollably.
Voice low, Lin Yicheng turned to Nanzhi and asked, "Fatty, do other people know about your house?"
Nanzhi, looking at Ercheng playing happily with Gougou, responded with a sigh, "I’ve kept the courtyard door firmly locked for the past few days to prevent anyone from finding out."
"You’ve got wiser after becoming a mother." Lin Yicheng nodded in agreement. It could indeed cause a big mess if someone were to find out.
If everyone was facing misfortune together, then they’d naturally band together and help each other out. But if everyone else faced misfortune while you suffered no loss, people would definitely be upset.
The better-natured ones would just complain privately, but if someone ill-intentioned found out, it would spell big trouble.
Why should everyone else’s houses collapse and suffer injuries, while yours remains perfect?
The moment someone harbored such thoughts, the situation would become impossible to resolve peacefully.
"Alright, Fatty, starting from tomorrow, big brother and I will come over every morning to help ’repair’ your house. But you must provide our meals." Lin Ercheng laughed, teasing while holding Gougou.
It would also be a good chance to find out what was going on in Lihua Village, to make sure their beloved little sister wasn’t suffering without their knowledge.
"Sure, thank you, brothers. I’ll definitely feed you well." Nanzhi patted her chest, declaring that she had food reserves now, unlike before when she had to starve for three out of nine meals. Nowadays, she was able to have three square meals a day.
"You little girl, do we, your brothers, really need you to feed us?" Lin Dacheng laughed. Last time, the pearl they got from their sister was sold to the jewelry shop manager for two taels of silver. With that money, they bought more grains for their house.
Before they left, their mother had told them not to eat a single plate of food at Nanzhi’s. She even prepared five pancakes each as their ration for the day.
"What will you eat then?" Seeing that neither Dacheng nor Ercheng brought anything extra, Nanzhi was confused.
Would they have to rush back to Stone Village every day for lunch?
