Becoming the Villain's Discarded Wife
Chapter 449: Hunting II

Chapter 449: Chapter 449: Hunting II

Since the mysterious failure of the crops in the fields, many trees at the foot of the mountain had died, leaving only the black gnarled branches that dissected the sky.

Looking up at the greyish sky, Yuanbao tightened her grip on the slingshot in hand.

She was a little afraid, but her father had always said that she was the bravest girl.

Gathering her courage, the little girl looked around and finally spotted a sparrow through a gap in the branches.

After hesitating for a while, she decided not to leave, but instead, took her slingshot and aimed carefully.

"Whoosh--"

The stone whistled through the wind, hitting the sparrow and dropping it to the ground.

Watching the little sparrow twitching on the ground, Yuanbao pursed her lips and put it into her cloth pocket.

Half an hour later, Yuanbao’s pocket was filled with three sparrows. Looking at the bare branches, she decided to pack up her belongings and move to another place.

"Give me back my sword! Give it!"

There came a child’s voice from not far away.

Aside from the little boy who was shouting, the others were gleefully running forward, showing no intention of returning the item to him.

Yuanbao didn’t want to stir up trouble, but when she saw the object that the lead child was carrying, her face changed.

It was her wooden sword!

"Give me back my sword!"

"No, we won’t return it! I took it, why should I give it back to you!"

The leading child was the unofficial ’king’ of the local children in the Tian Family village and was two years older than the others. He had snatched something from the young kid, and he had no intention of giving it back.

"Give it back to me!"

At the tender age of eight, the boring life in the village finally got exciting when he found a beautiful wooden sword, it was stolen as soon as he had washed it clean...

He was furious, but looking at Zhuzi, who was taller than himself, he could only swallow his anger.

"Don’t bully him!"

Yuanbao leant on her slingshot and the petite girl’s tone was cold.

"And you are?"

A village local, Zhuzi’s face dropped when he heard someone was standing up for the weak child.

Once he turned his head to see that it was just a little girl, he couldn’t help but feel disdain.

"What a hero you are, little girl!"

Zhuzi was eleven years old and should have been more sensible, but after losing his parents in the famine two years ago, he had been brought up by his grandmother.

Having lost her son, daughter-in-law and husband early on, the grandma doted on her precious grandson.

She had managed to keep him alive during the famine three years ago.

After that, it only empowered Zhuzi’s outrageous behavior.

"Brother Zhuzi, she’s one of... them..." one of Zhuzi’s sidekicks recognized Yuanbao and whispered into Zhuzi’s ear.

With a frown, Zhuzi glanced at Yuanbao, who was leaning on her slingshot, and then at Erniu standing by her side. Angrily, he decided to leave.

If it had not been for his grandmother’s advice to stay away from ’them...’

He would definitely have given Erniu a proper beating!

Who did he think he was, hiding good things for himself?

"You be careful!" Zhuzi shot a vicious look towards Erniu, and was about to leave with his sidekicks when he suddenly heard something whistling through the air.

By the time he realized what was happening, his left hand, which was holding the wooden sword, had been hit, and the immense pain made him let go of the sword involuntarily.

"Leave the thing behind."

"You little--!"

Before he could say anything more, he saw Yuanbao’s cold face as she aimed her slingshot again, and decided to give up the fight, leaving with his sidekicks only after throwing a tirade of nasty words.

Watching the wooden sword fall in the mud, Yuanbao felt a pang of heartache, but considering there were others around, she could only harden her expression, pocket her slingshot and break the silence frigidly.

"You... you okay."

The little girl had a lovely face; her hair tied up in a round bun with a brightly colored ribbon, which made her look even more adorable.

Erniu had never seen anything like it before.

The village girls usually wore patched old clothes, or their faces were filled with bitterness due to their frequent work in the fields.

Though Yuanbao was thin, her thinness didn’t have the same look as those suffering from chronic hunger.

Facing such a pretty girl all of a sudden, Erniu felt as if he had become mute and could not utter a word.

"What’s wrong?" Yuanbao frowned, her gaze occasionally wandering towards the wooden sword on the ground.

She was thinking about getting the boy to leave so that she could pick up the sword and wash it.

"I... I... I’m okay." Erniu stammered until his face turned red before he managed to utter that sentence.

Noticing her constant glances towards the wooden sword on the ground, he seemed to realize something, and hurriedly picked it up, rubbing the dirt off with his clothes before gingerly handing it over.

"Here...this is for you."

"Thank you." Seeing him return her wooden sword brought a smile to Yuanbao’s face.

Her treasure was back.

"No... you’re welcome."

"I thought it was lost. Have you washed it?"

Looking at the sword with no traces of blood, Yuanbao was surprised.

She had been wondering how to clean the blood off the wooden sword.

She hadn’t expected this boy to have cleaned it for her.

"No...it’s nothing."

Erniu paused for a moment, looking at a beaming Yuanbao but didn’t tell her the truth.

The sword was something he found while he was playing outdoors earlier.

He had seen it hanging by the door, and seeing no one around, he thought he would secretly have some fun with it and then return it.

But his fun was short-lived as Zhuzi and his gang soon snatched it from him.

Speculating that the wooden sword may belong to the little girl before him, Erniu blushed.

"Thank you, brother. I’m Yuanbao. What is your name?"

The little girl was beaming, her eyes narrowing into crescents and the dimples on her face making her look exceptionally cute.

"I... I’m Erniu."

Meanwhile, Aze was leading a group quietly deeper into the mountains.

They had just discovered the traces of a wild boar. If they could capture it and bring it back, the village’s food supply could last a little longer.

They had been returning empty-handed for three consecutive days. If they failed to bring back some game this time...

"Xiaoqi, stay back and follow my instructions," Aze whispered to the child next to him, pulling out a short knife.

His martial arts skills were not top-notch, and he wouldn’t last many moves against the likes of the General, but he had enough confidence to take down a wild boar.

"Alright."

Xiaoqi’s focus was firmly on their target ahead, quietly acknowledging.

The remaining eight people took up positions, forming an arc advancing slowly.

In the dry shrubbery, a rustling sound set everyone’s nerves on edge.

It was coming!
