Chapter 44: Chapter 44 Good Luck Bonus_1
Seeing Elder Li slightly relax, Ms. Wu also let out a sigh in relief, collapsing onto the ground and holding Shi Tou, she cried softly.
Li Tian, watching Ms. Wu’s display, felt a wave of disgust. However, he didn’t comment. Instead, he mentally planned for upcoming matters. Li Liang took his wife and daughter to the side, it was better for them not to interfere with the affairs of the main house to avoid being involved in any possible ensuing drama.
As the sun began to set, Nanzhi finally got up from the cot with a yawn and a stretch.
The outdoor temperature, compared with noon, was indeed much cooler. Even though it was somewhat better, it still felt stiflingly hot, like a steamer. After drinking a mouthful of cold well water, Nanzhi took her things and went out.
Gougou followed Nanzhi, carrying a fish basket in both hands. With two ponytails bouncing on his head, he looked like a little girl, amusing Nanzhi.
"Mother, what are you laughing at?"
Nanzhi, walking ahead, suddenly laughed, startling Gougou. He curiously looked at his mother, who was shaking with laughter.
"I was just thinking how you look like a little girl." Nanzhi said, pulling up the shrimp net she was carrying.
"Mother, Gougou is a boy, not a girl." Gougou, not in the least offended, seriously corrected Nanzhi.
"Alright, alright, Gougou is a boy. This time mother was wrong, can you forgive mother?"
Upon hearing Nanzhi’s words, Gougou hesitated and asked, "Why does mother need to apologize to me?"
Nanzhi kept smiling, looking straight ahead, she spoke clearly. "Because mother was wrong. Even if it was a joke, if it upsets the person hearing it, then it is wrong."
Gougou looked up at the shadows of the trees passing overhead and asked, "Then why didn’t she apologize when she fought with Granny Wu? I saw you cry before."
Nanzhi was taken off guard by his question, it took her a moment to realize he was referring to Ms. Wu bullying her in the past.
"Some issues don’t seem to have a clear right or wrong, these things you will understand when you grow up."
As though deep in thought, Gougou nodded and continued to follow Nanzhi."
When they got back to where they caught shrimps in the morning, there were already quite a few people there. Most families had someone injured in the earthquake. They heard that fish soup was restorative, so they came to catch fish today.
"Nanzhi, what’s that you’re holding?" Aunty Qin looked at the two shrimp nets in Nanzhi’s hands with some bewilderment, unsure what they were.
"I just put these together. Aunty Qin, did you also come here to catch fish?"
Nanzhi asked with a smile.
"Ah, yes." Aunty Qin heard Nanzhi’s question and nodded with a laugh, "Your idea is quite good. My daughter-in-law was not producing enough milk. After drinking the fish soup, she was able to breastfeed properly. We have to thank you."
Aunty Qin sincerely appreciated Nanzhi’s help. After her little daughter-in-law Ms. Zhou drank the fish soup, she had ample milk for two days. Her baby was delighted with the hearty meal. Aunty Qin came to catch some fish, hoping her luck would hold. She heard that Ms. Sun had caught three fish in the morning.
She believed she was capable as well, worst-case scenario, she could catch some river clams to make some porridge.
"It’s nothing, Aunty Qin, you go ahead, I’ll check around there."
Nanzhi waved her hand with a smile.
Aunty Qin also wanted to spend more time catching fish, so she agreed with a smile.
Noticing the crowd below, Nanzhi walked a bit further upstream until she could only see a few small dots for Aunty Qin and the others. She found an area with plentiful aquatic plants and placed her homemade shrimp net in the water.
"Mother, this cage is for you" Gougou, seeing Nanzhi put the strange thing into the water, handed her the fishing basket he was carrying.
"Thank you, Gougou, for helping Mama carry stuff." Nanzhi took the fish basket, didn’t forget to praise Gougou, and threw a few scraps of river clam into the fish basket. Because the scraps were left out all afternoon in the hot weather, they now smelled very fishy, which is just what was needed to attract all sorts of fish, shrimp, and crabs.
Upon seeing Nanzhi take out the river clam meat, Gougou covered his little nose, "Mama, it stinks."
"Mama doesn’t stink, it’s this that stinks." She said, and tried to hand the river clam meat to Gougou, which frightened the little guy into taking several steps back.
"Hahaha, Gougou is so timid." Nanzhi laughed heartily until she saw Gougou’s little face slowly turn red, and then she stopped.
Let it be.
"Is Gougou mad at Mama?" Nanzhi squatted down in front of Gougou and asked.
"Gougou’s not, Gougou’s just scared and can’t protect Mama." The little one hung his head, his small hands tightly gripping the corner of his clothes.
"Gougou is not timid. Mama was wrong, shouldn’t scare Gougou." Realizing the little one’s hidden thoughts, Nanzhi felt a bit guilty, then pointed to the smelly river clam meat in her hand and said, "Gougou, do you know why this meat has gone bad?"
Gougou thought about it, nodding and then shaking his head before hesitantly saying in a soft voice, "It’s hot, so the meat went bad."
"Gougou is really smart, do you know why Mama took it out?"
"Don’t know."
Looking at Gougou who was still hanging his head, Nanzhi continued, "This meat is used for catching shrimp and crabs. The farther the smell of clam meat spreads in the water, the more shrimp and crabs it attracts."
"The hotter the weather, the fishier the smell of the river clam meat. It’s what Gougou calls stinky."
Gougou, showing some interest, tilted his head and asked, "So, the bugs will smell the stinky smell and then come over?"
Seeing Nanzhi nod, Gougou looked at the clam meat in her hand, took a deep breath, and said, "Gougou is not scared anymore, the smelly meat can catch bugs, and the bugs caught can be eaten."
Listening to Gougou’s thinking, Nanzhi laughed, didn’t tease him anymore, but asked him to wait on the shore. She then took the fish basket into the river.
After finding a place she thought was "good", she set the fish basket, weighed it down with a couple of stones, and considered the job done.
Then she continued on her river clam hunting journey.
Perhaps the water level upstream was deeper, so in more than fifteen minutes, Nanzhi was able to find a dozen river clams, the largest one was as big as Gougou’s head, and the smallest was the size of her palm.
She put the clams aside and was about to check the shrimp net when she pulled up one and found seven or eight shrimps and two crabs waving their pincers.
Seeing these trophies, Nanzhi let out a light chuckle, took the shrimp net ashore, poured the crabs and shrimps into the small bucket she brought, then put the shrimp net back into the water.
She then squatted down again and pulled up another shrimp net. Looking at the three little jumping shrimps inside, Nanzhi was surprised. Could the difference be this big?
Looking at the shrimps less than three centimeters long, she didn’t plan to take them back. Just as she was about to put the shrimp net down again, something suddenly occurred to her.
"Gougou, come here."
Hearing Mama calling for him, Gougou quickly ran over from beside the small bucket, "Mama, what’s up?"
Holding the shrimp net in one hand and pointing at a bamboo stick with the other, Nanzhi said, "Gougou, touch this bamboo stick and say you want to catch a lot of shrimp."
Gougou didn’t understand what his Mama meant, but obediently reached out his little hand to touch the bamboo stick and said in his babbling voice, "Gougou wants to catch a lot of shrimp."
