Chapter 422: Chapter 422: Joy

Shen Wenchen’s expression changed so fast, that before Elder Qian could say anything more, he had already joyously embraced Nanzhi.

Being embraced by him in front of the elders, Nanzhi’s face turned a little red, and she gently pushed him away.

Fortunately, Shen Wenchen did not lose his senses entirely and quickly let go of her.

"Elder Qian, my wife has been in poor spirits recently. She often sits there and daydreams, and her appetite has decreased considerably. I don’t know what to do about it," he said with a tense expression.

Shen Wenchen straightened his face and couldn’t help but worry more.

Of course, he was happy about Nannan’s pregnancy, but to see her now sitting listlessly all day, her body becoming thinner and thinner, made him anxious.

"I find it strange too," Elder Qian stroked his beard, his gaze falling on Nanzhi’s stomach.

Logically speaking, this young girl’s pregnancy is only a month old, it shouldn’t be this serious.

And from her pulse, besides it being a bit weak, she is otherwise perfectly healthy.

"Girl, give me your hand, let me take a look," Elder Sun asked while pushing his old buddy aside.

Elder Qian, being pushed like this, almost fell to the ground. Thankfully, Shen Wenchen reacted quickly and held him steady.

Nanzhi nodded and extended her wrist again. As soon as Elder Sun felt her pulse, he frowned.

The pulse didn’t have any abnormalities, but it felt strange.

He had been a doctor for decades and had never encountered such a case.

The two elders studied Nanzhi for a long time, not ceasing their discussion until Shen Zhiyu woke up in the carriage and came in to join them.

The little one was sleepily rubbing his eyes, his little face bearing the imprint of his pillow. Seeing his mother sitting there, he quickly ran over.

"Mommy, Mommy!"

As the little one tried to run over with his short legs, Shen Wenchen pulled him by the back of his collar.

"Daddy..." the little one pouted, feeling wronged.

"Behave." Shen Wenchen was not moved by his son’s protest, only setting him down and lightly tapping him on the forehead.

Reprimanded by his father, Shen Zhiyu didn’t attempt to rush over again. He obediently waited where he was.

"I really can’t see any abnormalities," Elder Qian muttered to himself before finally shaking his head.

"Thank you for your efforts, esteemed seniors," said Nanzhi, thanking the two elders before leaving. When she wanted to bow, they stopped her.

After considering for a while, Elder Qian finally advised, "Don’t worry, if you still have the secret recipe you used last time, keep some with you. If you feel uncomfortable anywhere, use it. Your child seems to be naughty. When they are a bit older, talk to them more. This way, you might avoid suffering later."

"Okay," Nanzhi nodded in agreement. The family then left Jihe Hall.

Watching them leave, Elder Qian lost interest in continuing his game of chess. He merely sipped his tea, staring blankly at the chessboard on the table.

Previously, this girl had no pulse, but a remedy prescribed by her family revived her quick. This time, her condition was unclear. If they still had that magical medicine, it might save her life at a crucial moment.

On the way home, Shen Zhiyu did not say a word until they reached the city lord’s residence.

Only then did the little one, biting his lip, tug at Nanzhi’s clothes.

"Zhiyu, what’s wrong?" Nanzhi was already somewhat distracted and stared at him in surprise.

"Mommy, are you sick?" the little one’s eyes rimmed red, his voice shaking as he spoke.

"Mommy is fine," Nanzhi reassured him seeing his tears. Her heart softened considerably.

"Mommy has a little baby in her belly. She’s not sick," Shen Wenchen intervened, unable to bear it any longer. He held Zhiyu in his arms, afraid that he may accidentally bump into Nanzhi.

"Then, will Mommy get better?" The little one did not fully understand whether he would have a new brother or sister. He was only concerned about his mother’s health.

"She’ll get better," Shen Wenchen assured, love and gratification flooding his features. At least his son, like him, placed Nannan above all else.

Ten months.

The sky over Yan City became increasingly colder.

Nanzhi had been cautious about everything since she knew she was pregnant.

The management of the Three Flavours Residence was now completely handed over to Uncle Ping and Liao Da. The small courtyard next door was taken care of by a few girls together.

On usual days, she just stayed at home, reading books, and taking walks.

Although she couldn’t compare to herself before pregnancy, she felt a lot more energetic.

At least, there was no more self-doubt.

Wearing a padded jacket, Nanzhi couldn’t help but shrink her neck when she saw the bamboo branches in the courtyard shaking from the wind.

Summer had been so hot that it could evaporate the water in the well, but ever since autumn arrived, it was getting colder day by day.

"Madam, I’ll go close the window."

The one speaking was the old woman Shen Wenchen had especially requested to return.

There weren’t many maids in the City Lord’s Residence originally, so they had to hire additional people for taking care of others.

"No need, I want to look outside a bit more." Nanzhi shook her head, looking somewhat absent-minded at the foggy sky outside the window.

She too wanted to return to the restaurant.

But she had a premonition.

It would be better for her to stay at home for the next few months.

"Madam, please also be careful, you mustn’t catch a cold." Ma Po spoke and placed a shawl over Nanzhi’s shoulders.

"I understand, Ma Po, you can leave first. I would like some chicken soup tonight." Nanzhi smiled, pulling the shawl closer around her shoulders, and whispered.

Upon hearing her words, Ma Po nodded her head and exited the room, slowly heading towards the kitchen.

With no one else in the room, Nanzhi let out a small sigh and stretched out her hand to touch the rain, as thin as silk threads.

The raindrops fell on her fingers, the slight chill spreading instantly through her body.

The little one in her belly was no bigger than a soybean, yet it brought forth a wave of sadness in her heart.

Feeling the surge of negative emotions, Nanzhi hastily withdrew her hand, shook her head, and cast off the distressing thoughts.

The rain fell on the bamboo leaves, pitter-pattering, and rinsed the courtyard clean.

When Shen Wenchen and his son, Shen Zhiyu, returned, they saw Nanzhi sitting at the dining table, sipping her chicken soup delicately.

"Nannan, I’m back."

Shen Wenchen took off his cloak, received the towel from the servant, felt the chill leave his body, and then happily sat down beside Nanzhi.

"It rained today, have some chicken soup to warm up."

Nanzhi served him a bowl of soup with a radiant smile.

"Sure."

Seeing his father clean himself up, Shen Zhiyu quickly wiped his face and hands with the towel, ran, and sat on the other side of Nanzhi.

"Zhiyu, aren’t Doudou and Maomao coming over today?"

The children were staying at both places, however, they hadn’t been seen coming over in the past few days.

Now that their two shops were doing well, and their parents and brothers and wives were busy from morning to night. Upon thinking of that, she missed her family more.

Before, seeing the children around improved her mood as well.

"Brother Maomao said that they have settled their own yard, and will move there today. He needs to go back and help."

Zhiyu sat obediently, and earnestly answered his mother’s question.

"Is that so..."

Nanzhi looked a little lost before remembering that her mother had mentioned this matter a month ago.

Now that their family had divided their properties, her parents gave each of her two brothers a yard. It seems they have finished settling the yards, and today was the day of their move...
