Becoming the Villain's Discarded Wife -
Chapter 397: Bride Kidnapping
Chapter 397: Chapter 397: Bride Kidnapping
When Nanzhi escorted Shen Wenchen back to the Lord’s Residence, her face was already tinged with red.
This man wouldn’t stop talking nonsense all the way back in the carriage.
"Sister-in-law!" Twelve had been chased and teased by four little monkeys all afternoon, so he saw Nanzhi’s return as a godsend.
"Twelve, what happened to you?" Nanzhi looked at his dishevelled appearance with surprise as she helped Shen Wenchen closer to her.
"Sister-in-law, you’re finally back," Twelve said as he rushed over to her, wishing he had grown a pair of wings.
"What is this...?" Nanzhi didn’t finish her question when she saw those four little rascals running towards her from behind. She then understood the situation immediately.
"You’ve really gone to a lot of trouble."
"No trouble, no trouble at all, sister-in-law. Allow me," said Twelve as he took over the task of helping Shen Wenchen. He felt a heaviness settle on his shoulder as he struggled to keep Shen upright.
"Alright, it’s getting late. I’ll take the children home first."
Nanzhi summoned the children over with a smile.
After playing all afternoon, all the children were covered in sweat, and they smelled like a crowd of sweaty monkeys once they came closer.
"Mum!"
Zhiyu’s eyes lit up when she saw Nanzhi, and she was about to throw herself at her. Fortunately, Nanzhi reacted quickly and managed to dodge her.
"Stop, no more making a scene. We need to get back home quickly," Nanzhi gently scolded, her tone full of affection.
"Okay," said Zhiyu obediently. She stopped causing a fuss and got into the carriage with her three brothers.
"Sister-in-law, take your time getting back."
"I know, take care of Wenchen for me."
"Sure, no problem!"
Only when the carriage was out of sight did Twelve manage to let out a breath of relief.
Finally, the little monkeys had left.
Just about to help Shen Wenchen inside, Twelve suddenly felt the weight on his shoulder reduce.
Shen Wenchen was standing tall, no sign of the stumble in his step that was there moments ago.
Besides a slight redness in the corner of his eyes and the smell of alcohol on him, there were no signs that he had been drunk.
"Lord Shen?"
Twelve’s heart skipped a beat, sensing trouble.
With a glance, Shen Wenchen ignored him, then turned and entered the front gate.
It’s funny how he had painstakingly pretended to be drunk.
Twelve was indeed young.
Shen Wenchen was fine, but Shen Yuntian was drunk for two full days before he finally recovered.
"Yuntian, how are you feeling now?" Nanzhi passed him a cup of water as she sat at his side.
Shen Yuntian, his head still aching, took the cup of water. From Nanzhi with one hand supporting his forehead and slowly sat up.
"Sister-in-law."
His voice was terribly hoarse, like a torn windbag that had just been filled suddenly with a gust of wind.
"Drink some water, it will help with your throat," Nanzhi shook her head, insisting he should maintain his current position.
"Sister-in-law, I must leave." Shen Yuntian’s face was a bit pale, and his lips had dried up. He felt somewhat better after taking a sip of water.
"Hexiu is getting married, and it’s today."
Nanzhi stared at Shen Yuntian, her almond eyes as if wanting to see through him.
"Is that so...."
"Do you want to see her?" Nanzhi remained sitting straight, her facial expression unreadable.
"No, I don’t need to. It’s great that she’s found someone to marry," Shen Yuntian looked down, a tone of loss in his voice.
"The marriage was arranged by Hexiu’s family. The man she’s marrying is a butcher, thirty years old and a widower. He has beaten his previous two wives to death."
Nanzhi’s words made Shen Yuntian look up suddenly.
"How... how can it be?"
"It’s just for her six tael of silver dowry. If you truly wish for her well-being, it’s not too late. But if she marries this man, her life won’t be any different than his previous wives."
Nanzhi saw his hesitation and stood up, only leaving him with a few words before she left.
"She’s now at the inn near the city gate. There are two quarters of an hour left before the bridegroom arrives."
Nanzhi left, leaving Shen Yuntian alone in the room.
Lin Xiaoquan walked in with a bowl of hot porridge, only to witness the usually calm and reliable Shen Yuntian in a state of panic, his face revealing his utter confusion.
"Brother Yuntian, what on earth are you doing?" Lin Xiaoquan, after noticing Shen’s distress, quickly placed the bowl of porridge to the side.
"Xiaoquan, can you do me a favor? Go, go to the gate and get me a carriage."
"Sure, sure. I’ll go right now."
Shen Yuntian wore an expression of panic that he had never shown before. Although Lin Xiaoquan was unclear about what was going on, he knew that it was urgent. He nodded and rushed out to hire a carriage.
Shen Yuntian barely managed to put on a blouse haphazardly, not bothering about his appearances, and immediately got up from his bed.
He must find Hexiu.
He could not, he must not let Hexiu marry that man.
There were lots of pedestrians along the way, oblivious to the heat, with many traders carrying their varied goods and hawking their wares along the streets.
The carriage made slow progress on the busy street, which caused Shen Yuntian to break out in a sweat from impatience.
"Brother Shen, is there something urgent?" The driver, a regular at their restaurant, was quite familiar with Shen Yuntian.
"Yes," Shen Yuntian said while observing the passing crowd, with no mood to engage in any other conversation.
"Today isn’t the day to bring wine out of the city, is it?" The driver scratched his head and asked with a smirk.
Those in his line of business were well-informed; he pointed to a place where they could faintly hear the sound of pipes and gongs, indicating that Shen Yuntian should have a look.
"Today is a good day indeed! There are quite a few weddings in the city. We might even be lucky enough to get some wedding candies."
If they could get some wedding candies, they might also receive some good fortune.
"Are there many people getting married today?" Shen Yuntian’s face was still pale, his temples twitching uncontrollably, which gave him a sense of unease.
"Quite a lot. As far as I know, there are three."
"And, is there anyone near the city gate?"
Shen Yuntian clenched his fists, his eyes filled with regret. Even if he were to stop the wedding, he knew it would damage Hexiu’s reputation.
"There is, there’s a man living near the city gate. He’s a widower and a butcher, with two kids at home. I heard he’s finally found a girl who agreed to marry him and they’re getting married today. I’m getting my meat from there because it’s going to be one wen per pound cheaper for the next two days."
The driver’s face was almost beaming as he spoke. But Shen Yuntian’s face only grew worse.
Could it be that Sister Nanzhi was telling the truth?
"Could you please tell me if there is a shortcut to the city gate? My matter is quite urgent."
The driver looked at the crowd outside the carriage, which was moving faster than his carriage, nodded, and didn’t even take the ten wen coins from Shen. He only took out three wen coins.
"Just follow this alley all the way down, then at the end, turn left. You’ll reach the city gate."
"Thank you."
Shen Yuntian gave a fist and palm salute, left the coins on the axle of the carriage, then hurriedly got off and rushed towards the alley.
