Chapter 373: Chapter 373 Setting Off for Qing Fenghan (Farewell, Teacher Wu)_1
Shen Wenchen pondered for a moment, then whispered, "There’s a river outside of Yan City. If we take a boat and go down the river for seven days, and then ride a horse for another two days, we can reach Qing Fenghan."
"The round trip would take roughly twenty-two days," Nanzhi calculated in her heart. Coming back would surely be slower than going, but she would still have time to make it for their wedding date.
"Nannan!"
Understanding her intent, Shen Wenchen felt a slight weight in his heart.
Their wedding date was set for the middle of next month, and he hoped nothing would go wrong in between.
If someone really had to make the trip, it should be him.
Back then, when they were fleeing the famine, he hadn’t protected mother and son properly. Now, it was his responsibility to repay that kindness.
"Mom, I will go find that old man. His donkey is really fast! I made it to Yan City in just five days with him!"
Yuanbao, sitting aside and understanding their conversation, quickly spoke up.
"The old man?"
"Yes, godfather. On my way here, I met that old man at the foot of the mountain. He asked for a Silver Horn from me, and then he took me across in no time! His donkey runs so fast! Even faster than dad’s horse-drawn carriage!"
Shen Wenchen’s eyebrows rose. He stopped arguing with Nanzhi, stepped closer to Yuanbao, and asked gently.
"Yuanbao, can you tell me, what does that old man look like?"
Yuanbao had no reason to lie. The only person that came to Shen Wenchen’s mind who could do something like this was one individual.
The old man who had once eaten a fair amount of his pancakes.
"That old man has white hair, a black beard, and his head was shiny, just like, just like godfather and mom!"
Shen Wenchen didn’t understand the latter part of the little girl’s description, but he got the gist of the former.
White hair and a jet-black beard, wasn’t that the old man from before?
Could it be he was some extraordinary person as well?
After hearing Yuanbao’s description, Nanzhi felt it sounded familiar. She pondered for a while before realizing.
Wasn’t this the Daoist who had come to their house asking for shelter when she was a child?
Even her name "Nanzhi" had been given to her by him!
"Yuanbao, did the old man tell you where to find him?"
Shen Wenchen thought for a moment, then asked.
The little girl nodded her head and repeated exactly what the old man had told her when she had arrived.
"Then let’s set off in a while, does that sound good?"
Nanzhi was startled, not fully grasping his meaning.
"We’ll take a trip to Qing Fenghan together," Shen Wenchen said earnestly, locking eyes deeply with Nanzhi.
There were some matters he needed to discuss with the old man.
And others that he had to inform Chi Sheng about.
It wouldn’t be long before the imperial court would send forces to eradicate the mountain bandits.
"Okay."
Little Yuanbao had been eager to return, and upon hearing that Nanzhi would accompany her, she eagerly nodded her head in agreement.
After notifying Sun Cui that they would be away for a few days and sending word to Sanwei House, Nanzhi and Shen Wenchen finally left with Yuanbao.
First, they bought some dry rations, and only then did the trio leave the city gates.
"Yuanbao, where did the old man tell you to wait for him?"
Nanzhi gazed at the hurried passersby outside the city, feeling somewhat dazed.
"Over there." The little girl pointed her finger toward a narrow path not far away. Shen Wenchen bent down to pick her up, then led Nanzhi over.
Upon entering the woods, they were greeted by a refreshing coolness. Yuanbao climbed down from Shen Wenchen’s embrace, unwrapped the oiled paper from the purchased roasted chicken, and placed it on the ground. She then tugged Nanzhi to wait under a nearby tree.
Shen Wenchen was curious about what the little girl was doing but didn’t interfere, simply sitting quietly beside them.
The old man resting in the tree sniffed the air, and a tantalizing aroma wafted straight into his nostrils.
With a momentary lapse, he thudded onto the ground below.
Seeing the old man drop from the sky, Nanzhi instinctively protected Yuanbao in her arms, while Shen Wenchen’s pupils contracted sharply.
He hadn’t noticed anyone moving around him just now.
"You little tyke, why are you dawdling so much?" the elder grumbled unhappily, but his hand went straight for the roasted chicken on the ground.
"Buying a ginseng took you so long, you made my old bones wait all night!"
Once the roasted chicken was in his mouth, the elder’s grievances seemed to dissipate somewhat.
Delicious!
"Grandpa, will you take me, my mom, and godfather back with you, pretty please?"
Yuanbao cooed adorably.
"Your mom and godfather?" The elder paused in his eating, only then lifting his eyelids to glance at Nanzhi and Shen Wenchen beside him.
"Oh, you’ve grown so much," the elder said with a smile after a glance at Nanzhi.
Nanzhi was about to ask if he was the Daoist she’d met as a child, but she stopped in her tracks when she clearly saw his face.
"You used to be a little chubby girl! Now you’ve slimmed down so much!"
The elder clicked his tongue twice, yet didn’t stop eating; one chicken leg was polished off in the blink of an eye.
"Teacher Wu?"
Nanzhi’s eyes widened in disbelief as she called out.
The elder in front of her had white hair but a lustrously black beard, and his face was very kind—wasn’t this Teacher Wu, who had taught her in school?
But how did he end up here?
No, the real question was, how did he get to where she was?
Nanzhi was bewildered, yet the elder simply chuckled heartily.
"Fellow student Lin, how have you been doing here?"
"Good, everything’s good."
Nanzhi murmured, her mind storming with thoughts.
After finishing another chicken leg, the elder finally turned his attention to Shen Wenchen.
"Lad, you are a clever one, and lucky too—or else..."
The elder raised an eyebrow but said no more.
Or else, perhaps by now grass would already be two meters tall on his grave.
"Elder," Shen Wenchen greeted him with a bow before speaking up.
"It’d trouble you to take the two of us along this trip."
The elder opened his eyes wide, ignoring Yuanbao’s coquettish overtures, and snorted haughtily.
"Taking the two of you with me? Wouldn’t that tire out my donkey?"
"If you’re willing, at the end of this trip, we will surely express our gratitude generously," Shen Wenchen assured, watching the elder focused on devouring the roasted chicken.
"A generous reward?" The elder turned his head, looking sceptical.
"Would providing for your food and drink for a month be acceptable?" Shen Wenchen knew the elder enjoyed eating.
He knew just from the way the elder had gobbled down several pancakes he had him before.
His status was no ordinary one, but Wenchen could be certain he was not a bad person.
"Sounds good," the elder did not negotiate further.
He was aware that this little girl ran a restaurant in Yan City!
Best to take advantage of her hospitality before anything happened, lest he miss out in the future.
With a whistle from the elder, a donkey emerged from the forest, appearing unafraid of people, and rubbed its head against the elder’s face.
"Looks like you’ll be put through some hard work this time."
The donkey snorted, then slowly nodded its head.
Four people were seated on a donkey cart, swaying as they made their way toward Qing Fenghan.
Passersby who saw them could only silently pity the donkey.
