Becoming the Villain's Discarded Wife
Chapter 359: Overeating

Chapter 359: Chapter 359: Overeating

The changes in Yan City weren’t noticeable for many of the city’s residents.

Still, many people had gathered to watch Liao Er being beheaded – asking who he was and what he had done - and after hearing the story, they could only sigh in regret.

Those with relatives who were gamblers found satisfaction in the cruel spectacle.

People often don’t see their own faults, always subconsciously blaming others.

The execution of a man branded as "extremely treacherous and evil" earned the cheers of the crowd.

With Liao Er gone, who would be next? Zhang Er? Liu Er? Li Er?

What the townsfolk were more aware of was that the handsome, dashing city lord with a stern look was about to get married. These days, he smiles all the time, as if he has found a treasure.

But who the bride was remained a mystery.

It was the well-acquainted trio Hu San, Nanzhi, and Shen Miaomiao who’d figured it out, along with Lin’s mother who was looking to buy a store from Hu San, they’d pieced together the puzzle.

Particularly when Hu San was showing stores to Lin’s mother, Chen Qiulan, and Sun Cui, he noticed the city lord often smiling at him. It took him three days of showing them around to finally understand while they were inviting the city lord for dinner.

Shen Wenchen felt guilty for his past actions towards Nanzhi, and he always felt guilty in the presence of his parents-in-law. Although Lin’s parents never blamed him, being invited to dinner by his parents-in-law made him feel much better.

"Wenchen, what would you like to eat? I’ll ask the owner to cook it for you." Lin’s mother said, her heart filled with empathy looking at her son-in-law, who had been visibly happier lately.

Who would have thought that the stern General, feared by everyone, would call her ’Mother’ in such a sweet tone?

"Mother, I’m not picky. I’ll eat anything." Shen Wenchen gestured to his subordinates to continue their street patrol.

Liu Jie wanted to say something, but seeing his boss’s toothy grin, he decided to keep his mouth shut.

They had just finished their lunch, he recalled how their general had managed to devour three huge bowls of rice!

"Young man, bring us another large bowl of noodles." Knowing her son-in-law’s appetite, Lin’s mother quickly ordered the largest portion.

Chen Qiulan and Sun Cui also started chatting with Shen Wenchen, while Hu San was so surprised that he couldn’t utter a single word.

"Mother, what are you and my sisters-in-law up to?" Shen Wenchen asked with a teasing smile, glancing at Hu San.

Hovered by his gaze, Hu San was a bit frightened. He felt his legs shake uncontrollably, especially when he saw his bright white teeth. This made him swallow hard.

It was fear, not hunger.

Perhaps it was his past as a ruffian re-emerging, and right now, in front of Shen Wenchen, Hu San felt like a small-time crook on the verge of being caught by the authorities.

"He’s Hu San, he’s showing us some stores for sale," Lin’s mother chirpily explained. She had bought many properties from Hu San in the past, and hence, he had treated her family generously.

The properties they’d seen were good, but she wanted to look at more.

Perhaps, there were even better options.

"Mother, are you and my sisters-in-law planning to open a shop?" Shen Wenchen was surprised. If this was the case, why didn’t they ask him?

"We’ve saved up some money, enough to buy a shop." Lin’s mother had been in high spirits lately, having seen a few potential stores, she now felt more assured.

They now had over two hundred and twenty taels of silver, and a shop in a good location only cost about one hundred and fifty. After buying other necessary things, they would still have a few dozen taels of silver left.

With enough food at hand, the heart is at ease. She now considered herself a wealthy old woman.

After opening the store, buying a nice little courtyard wouldn’t be a problem.

Lin’s mother was in her forties, with quite a few greys in her hair. Even though there had been no shortage of food and drink in the past two years, she had also suffered plenty in her younger years. Now she just wanted her family to live a good life. Her daughter had opened a restaurant, but the capital was her son-in-law’s. She should also set up shops for her daughters-in-law. They couldn’t let their children fight over material possessions even after they were gone.

My daughter talked about asking her son-in-law for help, but she disagreed.

They didn’t match their son-in-law’s status, as he wielded considerable power now. They couldn’t rely on others for everything. They should do what they could by themselves.

"Mother!" Shen Wenchen sighed helplessly. Despite that, he understood their viewpoint.

He knew his parents-in-law were reasonable people, yet he couldn’t help feeling that their family shouldn’t be dividing things so clearly.

His parents had passed away early, and he hadn’t fulfilled his duties as a dutiful son. For his wife’s parents, he felt a duty of care and respect.

"We might need your help later. For now, just eat your noodles." Lin’s mother waved him off, her heart dancing with joy.

She was content, having a complete family; two dutiful sons and daughters, loving sons and daughters-in-law, and clever grandchildren. All this made her feel much more fortunate than other old women.

Although Shen Wenchen had eaten his lunch, he wasted not a single noodle from the large bowl, swallowing all of it.

Only after paying the bill, did they say their goodbyes.

Only when Shen Wenchen’s figure disappeared, did Hu San feel a weight lifting from his shoulders. He turned towards Lin’s mother with a mournful face: "Madam, are you...are you the city lord’s real mother?"

Lin’s mother paused, unable to understand why he looked so forlorn. She simply shook her head and said, "He is my son-in-law."

Hu San felt a bead of sweat on his forehead. He remembered when he was helping Lin’s daughter and Shen Miaomiao with their official documents at the county yamen, all the officers were very pleased. He had thought that the Lin and Shen girls simply had some connections, but he couldn’t imagine that the connection would be this big!

"Madam, if the city lord is your son-in-law, why did you come to me to buy shops?" Hu San was somewhat worried. Was the old lady trying to test him!

Although he had earned some profit from doing business with Lin’s daughter and Shen Miaomiao, he never cheated his acquaintances.

"You’re from the property industry, he’s not. Why should I involve him in buying a shop?" Lin’s mother frowned, looking a little displeased.

Chen Qiulan and Sun Cui exchanged glances, covered their mouths to avoid laughing, but said nothing. They only watched as Hu San wiped his sweat enthusiastically, before finally smoothing things over with a laugh.

Hu San felt baffled all afternoon. The townsfolk had been speculating about the city lord’s wedding, but he had never expected the bride to be someone he knew!

As Nanzhi was busy greeting customers at the restaurant, she saw Shen Wenchen walking in with a frown.

Upon making eye contact, Nanzhi quickly escorted him to a room in the backyard.

"What’s wrong with you?" Nanzhi asked him, puzzled, as he held onto his waist.

"I ate too much." Shen Wenchen wanted to sit down, but he felt so uneasy every time he did that he could only remain standing, grimacing as he rubbed his waist lightly. Afraid to put too much pressure, lest he vomits everything out.

"Why did you eat so much?" Nanzhi wanted to scold him, but seeing his uncomfortable look, she couldn’t bring herself to do it.

"You’re a father now, how could you eat to the point of making yourself feel sick? You should be more careful."
