Becoming the Villain's Discarded Wife -
Chapter 351: Old Lady Liao
Chapter 351: Chapter 351: Old Lady Liao
Nanzhi was startled, letting the old woman lead her to sit down.
"Girl, you are very pretty," the old woman sighed a little, patting Nanzhi’s hand.
Nanzhi glanced awkwardly at Shen Wenchen, who looked overwhelmingly proud.
His Nannan was absolutely the best!
It was only natural for others to have an eye on her!
"Grandma, I’m already engaged," Nanzhi replied, blushing from cheek to ear.
The old woman blinked in dismay, and followed her gaze to Shen Wenchen.
Looking at his smug smile, the old woman was also amused.
Although it was a pity, this young man seemed like a good person to settle down with.
"Girl, where are you headed?" The old woman asked, no longer prying about Nanzhi’s personal matters but about their journey instead.
"Elder, we were out hunting in the mountains, lost our way, and accidentally came across this little village," Lin Ercheng replied, scratching his head, feigning ignorance.
The old woman nodded her head, looked them over, cast a glance at Aze and Liao Da at the back, then finally withdrew her gaze.
"You’re here for a drink of water, right? Just wait, I’ll fetch some for you," the old woman stood up slowly; waved them to sit down before she left.
"Brother-in-law," Lin Ercheng surveyed the village, his expression slightly solemn.
There was something odd about this village.
Not only were there few people, but since entering the village, they had not seen a single young person.
They were all elderly folk, in their fifties and sixties.
The village was too remodeled to be some remote, forgotten village. It was clear that someone meticulously maintained and cleaned these houses, or else would they appear so new with only the elderly inhabitants in this small village located in a mountain recess?
Even when the elderly people saw them approach, they didn’t seem surprised, but rather acted as if they were expecting them.
"Let’s see how things unfold," Shen Wenchen, putting away his smug smile, stated succinctly, sitting next to Nanzhi.
He was certain of two things.
One, that they were indeed at the location Liao Er would have visited.
He had carefully inspected the intersection; although the path was overrun with weeds, there were slight scratches on the tree trunks on both sides, at a height equivalent to a horse carriage, stretching upwards to about a finger’s length.
That indicated that something frequently passed by, leaving marks on the trees as they grew.
On the other hand, the initially smooth road was overgrown, without any signs of being scraped against.
Second, there was no danger in this village. In fact, it was highly likely that these villagers were associated with Liao Er.
Ever since he found out in the other world that he was merely a character in a novel, Shen Wenchen was inclined to trust his intuition.
You could even say it was luck.
He didn’t understand why he was the book’s villain, or why it had to be him.
Yet, he sometimes felt fortunate.
Fortunate that he was chosen over a mere farmer, because how else would he have had the opportunity to join the military and possess such remarkable martial arts talent?
From the moment they entered the village to now, he had not felt the slightest unease, rather he felt oddly tranquil.
Everyone stayed silent in acknowledgment.
The old woman went straight to another wooden house.
An old man with white hair sat inside, dozing off.
When he heard someone enter, he lazily opened his eyes a bit.
"Is my son back?"
The old woman shook her head, pouring a pot of well water onto the stove, then retorted resentfully.
"You old fool, it’s already June, why are you still burning the coal?"
The old man rubbed his hands, looking dissatisfied, "It’s that brat who isn’t coming back, what’s the use of complaining to me?"
"He’s your son, if I don’t blame you, who will I blame?" the old woman sat on one side, boiling water, seeming a bit absent-minded.
Her heart was beating fast.
"What are you boiling water for? Don’t tell me there are more people?" He touched his beard, took a puff of dry tobacco, the white smoke floated up for a while before suddenly dispersing, quite suffocating.
"Yes, and a pretty girl too. It’s a pity she’s engaged." The old woman shook her head, not complaining about her husband’s smoky habits as she used to.
"He’s not so young anymore."
Loss filled the old man’s murky eyes.
His foolish son was coming back less and less frequently.
If he didn’t come back, he would just send people saying they had lost their way and needed some water, or they were separated and needed a place to stay.
They were old, not stupid. They understood what was going on after this happened so many times.
Maybe having some young people in the village to keep the old folks company wasn’t so bad.
Only, he didn’t know if he’d live to see his grandchildren.
After the water boiled, the old woman picked up the kettle and walked towards the other house.
"A young girl needs to drink warm water, you can’t drink cold water, it’s bad for your health," she advised Nanzhi as she walked into the room.
"Thank you, ma’am," Nanzhi said, smiling somewhat awkwardly. They had merely used the pretext of needing water, but instead of fetching any random bowl of water, the old woman had gone to the trouble of boiling a whole pot.
"No need for thanks, having someone to chat with us is already a blessing. It’s good that he’s always thinking of ways to make that happen," the old woman placed the kettle on the table, set a few tea bowls, and slowly spoke.
The Lin brothers were taken aback, they looked at the old woman, then at Shen Wenchen.
"Elder, you’re speaking strangely, doesn’t your family frequently return home?"
"They’re busy." The old woman waved her hand, changing the subject, "The water’s a bit hot, drink it slowly."
"Uh-huh."
Everyone echoed in unison. The old woman sat down and resumed sewing shoe pads. The quiet room was filled with the slight sounds of people sipping from their tea bowls.
"Granny, I haven’t noticed any young people in the village. Are there any?" Nanzhi took the opportunity to ask, hoping to glean some information from the old woman.
Liao Da and Aze left the house to inspect the other parts of the village.
"In our village, we only have us old bones," the old woman sewed her shoe pads, speaking softly.
Nanzhi pursed her lips, continuing to ask, "Then, may I know your surname, Granny, to address you properly?"
The old woman paused her work, raising her eyes to look at Nanzhi, she remained silent for a moment before replying, "You can call me Granny Liao."
The surname was Liao.
Shen Wenchen’s eyes darkened slightly.
As he suspected, this village was connected to Liao Er.
But what was he doing building this village in Niutou Mountain?
Liao Er had connections but was not on the hitlist initially.
But now, the gambling scene was growing more rampant. Capturing him red-handed would be good too.
He was hoping to gain something from this journey.
Perhaps he already had, but he still needed some substantial evidence.
