Becoming the Villain's Discarded Wife -
Chapter 330: We’ll Know in 3 Days
Chapter 330: Chapter 330: We’ll Know in 3 Days
Shen Miaomiao lay in Nanzhi’s bedroom waiting, but Nanzhi didn’t return after some time. Miaomiao could only stare blankly at the ceiling.
"Miaomiao?"
Nanzhi tiptoed into the room before quietly calling out to Miaomiao.
"Sister Nanzhi, you’re back?"
Shen Miaomiao immediately sat up in bed, her walnut-like eyes wide open and fixed on Nanzhi.
"Yeah. You’re still awake?" Nanzhi frowned at Miaomiao’s swollen eyes, sympathy rare in her heart.
"I was waiting for you. Tell me, was Auntie Zhuang acting strangely?" Miaomiao poured a cup of water for Nanzhi before she asked the question.
She had found Auntie Zhuang’s behavior at dinner quite odd.
Even though the customs in Nanzhi’s house weren’t as rigid as those wealthy families, anyone with a sense should avoid sitting next to Uncle Lin.
Even allowing Auntie Zhuang to eat at the same table was a generous act done by Auntie Lin. But was there a precedent for a servant to sit beside the house owner?
"There was indeed something off." Facing Miaomiao’s questioning look, Nanzhi didn’t clarify what Auntie Zhuang had done. Unseemly family affairs must never be aired in public, especially such private matters.
"So, she’ll be sold off?" Miaomiao asked curiously, then continued, "Sister Nanzhi, if there’s anything wrong with her, you shouldn’t ignore it. It would be better to sell her soon and get some peace of mind, to avoid possible troubling incidents in the future."
If only they had discovered what kind of person Li Lian was sooner and had her divorced. Then all those disastrous events wouldn’t have happened.
As Miaomiao’s mood plummeted, Nanzhi could only gently squeeze her hand in consolation.
"She will be sold. But because my mother and my sister-in-law took pity on her, I’m worried if I sell her directly, they might be upset. Avoiding misunderstandings amongst family is crucial."
"I guess you’re right." Miaomiao nodded then pressed her index finger to her lips contemplating.
The two young girls sat on a bed and stared out the window, lost in thought until the bright moonlight streamed into their room. Then their heads turned simultaneously, their eyes meeting each other’s.
"I have an idea!"
"I have an idea!"
The girls’ voices rang out in unison, spurring a fit of laughter.
"Sister Nanzhi, what solution have you thought of?" Shen Miaomiao wanted to rub her eyes, but the moment her hand touched her face, the pain forced her to wince and retract her hand.
"We can spend some silver to hire a man to pretend to court her for a few days. Then we can publicly announce that the man bought Auntie Zhuang and took her away. This way, the story is believable. We’ll then ask Hu San to sell her far away to avoid any future encounters and misunderstandings."
Nanzhi was thinking logically. Since her mother and sister-in-law pitied Auntie Zhuang due to her circumstances, let them believe Zhuang found a good place to live. Then get Hu San to sell her far away.
If Auntie Zhuang could sniff men’s underpants, who knows what else she was capable of? Nanzhi couldn’t risk her households’ safety.
Shen Miaomiao nodded, agreeing with Nanzhi’s solution.
"Alright, let’s sleep." Nanzhi patted the beddings, her face showing traces of exhaustion.
"Okay."
The two girls lay side by side. A shared silence somehow sparked the urge to confess secrets.
"Sister Nanzhi...."
"Yes?"
"I’m a little tired." Shen Miaomiao closed her eyes, her mind consumed by Shen Zhong’s words.
"You need to rest and not overwork yourself." Staring at the moonlight on the floor, Nanzhi’s eyes were filled with longing and sorrow.
She wondered how Shen Wenchen was doing...
"Sister Nanzhi, do you think Shí’èr will ever come back?" Suddenly, Miaomiao thought of the man she loved, a small crack forming in her once solid heart.
She had to acknowledge the truth in Shen Zhong’s words.
She was just a village girl.
Even if she was now the head of Sanwei Residence, it was all thanks to Sister Nanzhi. Her status had simply shifted from a villager to a merchant. Could she truly be worthy of Shí’èr?
"They’ll come back. They both will." Nanzhi spoke with conviction, believing in both Shen Wenchen and Shí’èr.
"But, but I am not his equal..." Miaomiao’s voice was bitter as she spoke. Her already swollen eyes threatening to let loose another wave of tears.
The nighttime was already the lowest point of one’s mood, let alone when your family just encountered trouble. Nanzhi could only hold Miaomiao tightly and whisper her consolations.
"Miaomiao, don’t worry too much. Shí’èr isn’t that kind of man, you have to trust him, do you understand? He could be on the way back home right now."
Miaomiao nodded, tears swirling in her eyes as she clung onto Nanzhi, whispering for a long while.
It wasn’t until late at night that the two finally fell asleep.
In the meantime, Shí’èr on the road with Shen Wenchen suddenly felt a strange itch in his nose and sneezed several times in succession.
"Damn it. Shen Big Brother, am I catching a cold, huh?" Shí’èr asked while wiping his nose and looking at Shen Wenchen by his side.
The latter only glanced at him without speaking.
"Shen Big Brother, why won’t you talk to me!? It’s so late and you don’t want to rest. Surely, you could chat with me while we’re travelling, right?" Shí’èr was like a chatty old woman who had tendered his words unceasingly since they left Kyoto. Shen Wenchen felt like he was growing calluses on his ears.
"Can you just shut up?"
Fed up with all his babbling, Shen Wenchen cursed out.
"I am, I am doing this because I’m nervous!" Shí’èr frowned. He was tired from the rush and hurry of their journey. It felt like he was nearing his deathbed.
Yet Shen Big Brother was only focused on the journey. Was his butt made of iron that he felt neither the fatigue nor the pain?
"Can you put your mouth to rest? That would be a great help already." Shen Wenchen’s face distilled into an expression of resignation.
Having been on the road was tiring enough, but having to deal with Shí’èr’s chatter was proving to be quite the nuisance.
He didn’t understand what Miaomiao saw in Shí’èr.
Was it because he talked a lot or because he was thick-skinned?
"Shen Big Brother, I’m just nervous!" Shí’èr puckered his lips, untouched by Shen Wenchen’s scolding.
Shen Big Brother was estranged from his memory for three years and didn’t return home. His wife worked hard to raise Zhiyu during that time. Yet, Shen Big Brother managed to appease his wife and gained her forgiveness. Shí’er believed that he needed to learn this skill too.
Remembering his sister-in-law, Shí’èr’s face twisted with dilemma.
"Shen Big Brother?"
Having been called by Shí’èr continuously, Shen Wenchen had automatically started blocking him out.
Seeing Shen Wenchen ignore him, Shí’èr hesitated before asking, "Shen Big Brother, we will be in Yan City in three days. Are you, are you truly going to marry that woman who looks similar to sister-in-law?
If you were, if you truly married her, it wouldn’t be fair to sister-in-law..."
Having grown up with his father in the military camp, there were no young female relatives around in Shí’èr’s family. It was only when he visited Shen Big Brother’s house three years ago and met such a good sister-in-law that he felt the warmth of having a home.
But now Shen Big Brother was going to marry someone else...
Shen Wenchen raised an eyebrow at him, only replying, "You’ll know in three days."
