Chapter 328: Mysterious Atmosphere
Chapter 328: Chapter 328: Mysterious Atmosphere
Lin Yicheng and Lin Ercheng followed closely behind their father, not interacting with Aunt Zhuang, just leaving their belongings at the corner of the yard and heading to the main house.
"Brother Lin, why don’t you take off your dirty clothes first? I’ll go and wash them." Aunt Zhuang offered, her smile somewhat forced. Her arms were extended, not showing any intent of withdrawing them.
Father Lin felt uncomfortable upon hearing her call him ’Brother Lin’, as if he had swallowed a fly. His face was increasingly imbued with displeasure.
Lin Yicheng and Lin Ercheng walked quickly, surprised to see that Nanzhi had returned early in the morning.
"Nanzhi, why are you home so early today?" Lin Ercheng asked, pleased. Since she had started running the restaurant, she rarely stayed at home and always returned late, which made them worried about her.
"I finished with my tasks early, so I came home," She replied.
As Lin Yicheng nodded, he noticed Shen Miaomiao and was about to greet her, but then he saw that her eyes were red and swollen, looking somehow scary.
"Miaomiao, did something get into your eyes? Why are they so swollen?" he asked.
Lin Yicheng clicked his tongue as he spoke, and Nanzhi, looking on, couldn’t help but find the situation a bit funny.
But Shen Miaomiao’s heart was filled with bitterness again.
She envied Sister Nanzhi for having such good brothers.
"Your eyes look like a bug got into it!" Mother Lin stepped in front of her two sons, holding up a hot towel full of compassion, and walked over to Shen Miaomiao.
"Here, close your eyes, let auntie put this on for you."
Mother Lin’s doting tone made Nanzhi want to laugh, so she tugged at her mother’s sleeve, "Mother, Miaomiao is already an adult. Let her use the warm towel by herself, it’s not nice to see."
Mindful of the three children and Xiaomi at home, Mother Lin relented and dropped the thought of applying the warm towel herself.
"Aunt Zhuang, is the meal ready?" Worrying that Nanzhi and the others were hungry, Mother Lin turned to Aunt Zhuang who was still lost in her thoughts.
"Yes, yes it is. There is still food in the kitchen. I’ll go and get it." Aunt Zhuang came to her senses and hurried to the back kitchen.
Nanzhi was also surprised to hear her mother address her as ’Aunt Zhuang’, but considering it was just a form of address, she didn’t pay much mind.
Father Lin seemed to want to say something but held himself back, heaving a quiet sigh in the end.
"Mom, how is Aunt Zhuang at home?"
"She’s pretty good. Life hasn’t been easy for her but she always does her work efficiently. Everything in the house is well taken care of, and when your sisters-in-law and I come back, we can have a hot meal. It’s really nice."
Mother Lin was quite pleased with Aunt Zhuang.
Although her daughters-in-law normally didn’t allow her to cook because they were filial, they were also tired. She couldn’t really let them do all the housework while she enjoyed her leisure time.
Now things were good. Her daughter had brought back Aunt Zhuang, who cooked two meals a day, did the laundry, and did all the cleaning. How could she not be satisfied?
"As long as it’s okay." Nanzhi replied, smiling at Mother Lin’s satisfaction. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed her father’s dissatisfied expression.
Could it be that Aunt Zhuang had upset Father somehow?
Lin Yicheng and Lin Ercheng called out their wives for dinner, while Xiaomi went to get Lin Zihan, Lin Jian, and Shen Zhiyu.
Noticing Nanzhi sitting at the table, the children’s faces lit up with joy.
"Mother! Why did you come back so early today?"
The child sat down next to Nanzhi, his rosy little face full of delight that brought joy to whoever saw it.
"Yes, mother missed Zhiyu, so she came home early today." Nanzhi pinched his little face. Feeling the familiar sensation of his plump cheeks made Nanzhi feel content.
"I’ve been good, the teacher praised me for being smart! I obey and complete my assignments every day, and I miss mother too." His childlike voice and his rapid talking endeared him to Nanzhi, and she could not help but want to embrace him in her arms.
This son of mine is too adorable!
"I’ve been good! But Brother Maomao misbehaved, he hid caterpillars in our classmate’s book!"
The little guy was so proud of himself that he inadvertently snitched on Lin Jian.
Lin Jian, who had just managed to persuade the teacher with three little notes not to tell their parents, felt a chill run down his spine when he heard his younger brother’s words. Turning around stiffly, he saw that his mother’s face had darkened.
"Uh, Mother..."
Lin Jian stammered and could hardly speak, finally managing to call out ’Mother.’
Sun Cui was feeling a bit unwell and had been resting in her room. But when she came out and heard that her son had caused trouble again, she suddenly felt invigorated. She picked up a wooden stick and felt like she could chase the child for ten miles.
"You little rabbit!" Sun Cui glanced left and right, picked up a thin bamboo stick to spank Lin Jian, only to be stopped by Mother Lin.
"Sun Cui, don’t lay a finger on him, sit down if you’re feeling unwell. Let Ercheng handle the child." Mother Lin pulled Sun Cui to sit down, then signaled Lin Ercheng with her eyes.
Lin Ercheng was no fool, naturally understanding his mother’s meaning, he promptly grabbed his son by the ear and pulled him aside.
Before being dragged away, Lin Jian looked at Shen Zhiyu with a pitiful expression, leaving the little one stunned.
He hadn’t intended to spill this secret to Mother.
Nanzhi found it a bit amusing, but she knew that if she laughed at this moment, her son might be labeled a "little traitor," so she suppressed it.
Shen Miaomiao, with a hot towel covering her eyes, watched the scene with a bit of envy.
She also wanted to have this kind of life.
However, since her brother went missing, her parents seemed to have aged a decade in just two years. Even though he’s back now, things don’t seem to be improving.
Zhuang’s aunt had served the meal, and everyone sat down at the table.
However, when there were only three seats left, Aunt Zhuang conveniently took the one next to Father Lin, which made Nanzhi frown.
Shen Miaomiao also looked a bit peculiar, and Father Lin even shifted closer to Mother Lin.
"Why are you crowding me? There will be no room left for me soon. At your age, what games are you playing?" Mother Lin was annoyed by his actions and felt that her husband had been acting strangely recently.
Father Lin looked as if he was choking on something. Ultimately, he moved his stool and went back to his original seat.
At the dining table, Nanzhi and Shen Miaomiao sat directly opposite Father Lin, and every time they reached out to pick up food, they could see Father Lin sandwiched between Aunt Zhuang and Mother Lin.
Seeing this odd seating arrangement and her father’s disgusted expression, as if he had swallowed a fly, Nanzhi began to suspect something unpleasant.
While Nanzhi was pondering, she saw Aunt Zhuang pick up a piece of meat for her father.
"Brother Lin, eat more meat."
At this, everyone else at the table didn’t react, but Nanzhi and Shen Miaomiao were so shocked that their jaws almost dropped.
Father Lin simply put down his chopsticks, got up, and left.
"What’s up with this old man..."
Mother Lin muttered to herself for a while before she started talking to Shen Miaomiao again.
"Miaomiao, eat up, have some more."
Shen Miaomiao swallowed her doubts and nodded, forcing herself to eat.
