Becoming the Villain's Discarded Wife -
Chapter 284
Chapter 284: Chapter 284
When the word "hotpot" popped out from Shi’er’s mouth, Shen Wenchen had a hunch.
He feared there might be other transmigrators in this world, which could potentially complicate things.
Because he was curious if this so-called hotpot was the same as the one he was familiar with, Shen Wenchen didn’t refuse, but instead followed Shi’er to the restaurant.
The establishment was bustling and decorated attractively, the walls adorned with numerous graffiti. Illuminated by the warm yellow lanterns, it vaguely resembled the ambience of an actual hotpot chain.
"How many guests?" The waiter, just done ushering in a table of customers, noticed Shen Wenchen and Shi’er.
He quickly bowed and invited them to take a seat.
"We’re here to meet a friend, a private room should already have been booked."
After hearing this, the waiter took down some details and then led them upstairs.
On their way upstairs, Shen Wenchen glanced around, observing the red chilies hung on the wooden partitions which gave him a bad feeling.
He had a feeling this meal might not turn out as pleasing as he had anticipated.
The success of a good hotpot lies in the freshness of the ingredients and the base soup.
He didn’t believe that a delectable hotpot could be achieved given the lack of sophisticated spices and variety of vegetables in their time.
Before he lived in this time, he thought many dishes were tasty here, but after experiencing both worlds, he truly understood what deliciousness meant.
Shi’yi had already been waiting in the private room. As soon as he saw Shen Wenchen and Shi’er enter, a smile appeared on his face.
"Big Brother Shen, you finally arrived!"
"You’re exaggerating," Shen Wenchen replied helplessly.
"It’s been over two years and you haven’t written a letter. You didn’t forget us brothers in favor of some woman, did you?" Shi’yi joked with a wink at him.
Shen Wenchen did not harbour any grudges; after all, they were brothers. As he listened to Shi’yi’s jesting, he said: "After I return to Yan City this time, I’m going to get married. If you could attend, I’d be overjoyed."
"Getting Married!?"
Shi’yi and Shi’er gasped in unison. They glanced at each other, and both saw the confusion in the other’s eyes.
When Big Brother Shen joined the army for three years, they didn’t expect the general to bring him back, only learning two years ago that Shen had suffered from amnesia, forgetting his family. Unbelievably, he led his brothers back to his hometown after regaining his memory.
The sister-in-law and Zhiyu were left to fend for themselves.
Afterward, they stayed in Lihua Village for less than half a month before they were forced to flee again, becoming refugees.
Shi’er was particularly bewildered, his handsome face a little dazed.
He spent over half a year in Yan City with the general intending to recall Big Brother Shen to Kyoto, but he chose to stay in Yan City for the sake of his sister-in-law.
But now, it hadn’t been more than two years, could it be that Shen had someone else in his heart?
Even if he had, he should wait three years first...
"Big Brother Shen, think carefully, you can’t let Zhiyu resent you," Shi’er advised carefully.
After all, the sister-in-law left during the time of famine. If Shen got remarried, Zhiyu would be left alone and pitiful.
"Yeah, Big Brother Shen, it won’t be fair to your sister-in-law if you hastily remarry. She was a good woman," Shi’yi also expressed his concern.
The sister-in-law was an exceptionally good person. Shen was away from home for three years and she not only chose not to remarry but also took good care of his parents and raised Zhiyu single-handedly.
Just when they were finally going to live a good life, she passed away on the road fleeing from the famine.
"Don’t worry, Zhiyu knows about this. And, I don’t have feelings for anyone else. If you don’t have any official duties, you can accompany me back to Yan City and know the truth," Shen Wenchen did not plan to tell his brothers the details. He just finished his sentence with a smile and shut up, leaving the other two, pondering and speculating.
"Gentlemen, your spicy soup pot has arrived," the waiter announced, carrying a copper pot full of red oil.
The size of the pot was enormous. It was filled with a red base soup, floating with pieces of chillies and lots of peppercorns. Just one glance was enough to make one’s tongue tingle in anticipation.
The waiter carrying the copper pot did not place it on the table immediately but stood aside.
Another person brought in a basin of lit charcoal.
"Gentleman, be careful, I’m about to add the charcoal," the waiter announced. Lifting the round cover off the table, he placed the charcoal basin inside.
Once the charcoal was safely in place, the waiter holding the copper pot carefully set it on top of the rack.
"Gentlemen, the way to eat hotpot is to put the meat and vegetables separately into the pot. Wait for the soup to boil, then use long chopsticks to take out the food."
As the waiter finished speaking, the server behind him had already brought in the dishes that Shi’yi had ordered.
Staring at the table full of meat and vegetables, Shi’er was a bit taken aback, "Is this the new way of eating? But they’re not helping us cook, how are we going to manage?"
"Just put in whatever you want to eat, there’s nothing much to it," Shen Wenchen shook his head. Though the soup base was a little thin, he sighed, knowing that beef butter hotpot was the most popular in this era. Despite sanctioned cattle rearing, the quantity was limited. Beef in Kyoto could sell for 110 wen per pound and was always in demand.
Could the restaurant bear such high costs?
After two years apart, Shi’yi was not ambiguous and ordered every dish recommended by the waiter.
At first, Shi’yi and Shi’er found it quite good, especially after they’d tasted the lamb slices, they kept nodding approvingly.
However, the more they ate, the stranger they felt, while Shen Wenchen stopped after just two bites.
The soup of this hotpot was just salty and spicy, with no other flavors. Even the layer of peppercorns on top did not give off any taste.
Seeing him not moving, Shi’er asked curiously, "Big Brother Shen, why aren’t you eating?"
"I am eating," Shen Wenchen shook his head. As his brother had arranged for this welcome meal, he didn’t want to offend him.
Even though the taste was mediocre, it was still a thoughtful gesture from Shi’yi.
After all, Shen himself barely knew how to cook anything beyond porridge and fried rice.
"Let’s call it off. The food here doesn’t taste good," Shi’yi was the first to stop eating. He had heard about how superb this place was, so he decided to bring Shen Wenchen and Shi’er here.
But the result was a total disappointment.
As martial artists, they naturally preferred bolder flavors. If what they ate was bland, they wouldn’t have the energy to train.
Shi’er and Shen Wenchen didn’t say anything. If Shi’yi wanted to go, then they would. There was no point in wasting resources.
Just as the three were about to leave and pay the bill, they overheard a bout of laughter from the private room next door.
"Such naivety! Can’t even appreciate good food."
