Chapter 241: 241_1

When Mother Lin and her two daughters-in-law returned, Nanzhi had already prepared dinner and was discussing with Shen Miaomiao in the yard about hiring help.

"Mother, Sister Chen, Sister Sun," Shen Miaomiao quickly got up to greet them as she saw them return.

"Miaomiao, you’re here? Sit, sit, keep yourselves busy." Mother Lin waved her hand with a smile, signaling her to sit down, while she and her two daughters-in-law went to the back yard to freshen up.

"Mother, should we wait for Father and the rest to come back before we eat or should we save some for them?" Nanzhi asked, then she nodded and continued discussing with Shen Miaomiao after receiving confirmation that they should wait and eat together.

"Then let’s go to the Yahang tomorrow to see if there’s anyone suitable."

"Alright," Shen Miaomiao nodded.

Aside from providing trading services, Yahang served as an intermediary as well. In Yan City, there were professional agents who would arrange jobs for people. Many who were seeking employment would register at Yahang for a fee of ten wen coins. Businesses looking to hire would select candidates at Yahang. The Yahang would then notify suitable candidates for an interview. Larger businesses usually chose their staff from Yahang.

Once the transaction was completed, the middleman would earn a minimum of 200 wen coins as a service fee.

Nanzhi was astonished when she first found out, but after giving it some thought, she understood why it was so.

After all, there were too many things in this world she didn’t know.

The three men of the Lin family returned home early today, and Shen Miaomiao, who had planned to leave, was asked to stay for dinner.

All three children seemed a bit listless at the dinner table, knowing they were returning to the academy the next day, which made the adults break into laughter.

"You have to behave at the academy, do you understand?" Father Lin instructed the children as he put a piece of meat in each of their bowls, an expression of satisfaction on his face.

Could he have ever dreamed that his family would be able to enjoy such a good life?

Not to mention, both his grandsons were excellent scholars!

"Understood, Grandfather," Lin Zihan nodded, his face solemn.

"Miaomiao, have you and Nanzhi figured out how to open a restaurant?" Father Lin asked, after affirming his grandsons’ agreement, he turned his head to ask Nanzhi.

"We’ve decided with MiaoMiao, tomorrow we’re going to Yahang to see if there are suitable helpers."

Nanzhi replied with a smile.

"The most important thing is to find a good chef, otherwise, the restaurant won’t last long," Father Lin pondered for a moment before continuing.

"If all else fails, you could see if the original Baiweizhai’s chef has found a new job. If not, you can invite him back."

"I don’t think it’s possible." Mother Lin shook her head, Baiweizhai had collapsed, who knows what hidden issues were there?

The easiest way to sabotage a restaurant is from the kitchen.

"What’s so impossible about it?" Father Lin frowned, slightly upset, and muttered under his breath.

Lin Yicheng and Lin Ercheng looked on at their parents, without uttering a word, continuing to eat their dinner.

Shen Miaomiao felt a bit awkward and didn’t know what to say.

"We prefer hiring a newcomer. After all, we don’t know much about these things, and a senior chef may not respect us," Nanzhi suggested while serving Shen Miaomiao some vegetables. She laughed as she explained.

"Well said, you two young girls doing business, it’s best to find someone who can be trusted," Father Lin agreed readily without further comment.

After that, Lin Yicheng, who seemed to have thought of something, excitedly announced, "Mother, sister, guess what. The business in our carpentry shop was great today. We sold four wheelchairs alone, and there are still three orders pending!"

Hearing this, Chen Qiulan suddenly thought of the wheelchair Mrs. Cui sat on today, she pulled on her husband’s shirt and asked, "Did Mrs. Cui come to our shop today?"

Caught off guard by his wife’s question, Lin Yicheng was somewhat confused, "Mrs. Cui? Who is that?"

"The pancake seller!"

Mother Lin’s face soured at the mention of Mrs. Cui.

"No, she didn’t come," Lin Yicheng thought for a moment, then shook his head in denial. A woman did come to the shop to buy a wheelchair today, but she was in her fifties, buying a wheelchair for her ailing husband.

She said that her husband had been paralyzed for most of his life, and she only came after hearing they were selling wheelchairs at their shop.

"So, she didn’t go?" Chen Qiulan furrowed her brow, somewhat puzzled. Where did Mrs. Cui get her wheelchair from?

Nanzhi was utterly confused by their conversation. What did Mrs. Cui have to do with the wheelchair? Suspecting that something had happened that day, Nanzhi put down her bowl and chopsticks. "Sister-in-law, did something happen today?"

"Before we came back today, Mrs. Cui arrived sitting on a wheelchair," Chen Qiulan stirred the rice in her bowl. She never liked Mrs. Cui, especially the way that woman looked at her husband’s father, it was too warm for her liking.

Nanzhi was stunned, within a few days of not seeing her, Mrs. Cui is now in a wheelchair?

"What’s she doing with a wheelchair? Did she break her leg?"

"Looks like she sprained her foot. Who knows where the wheelchair came from."

"The one she was sitting in, was it carved?" Lin Ercheng suddenly seemed to remember something and turned to his wife.

Sun Cui was eating a pancake, upon being asked by her husband, she thought for a moment before replying, "Yes, it was carved. Mother said it looked a lot like Father’s craftsmanship."

"But, wouldn’t the carved one be sold to Wu Er? I even delivered it to the Hongfu Building this afternoon." Lin Yicheng scratched his head, confused.

"Sold to Wu Er?" Mother Lin’s eyelid twitched, she had a bad feeling about this.

"Yes, when I went back to return some bowls and plates at noon, I was stopped by him, saying he wanted to buy a wheelchair. I looked at his leg and it seemed fine, but he said it was for his wife.

I told him there’re wheelchairs that cost one-tael and two-tael of silver. He chose the two-tael one, and I delivered it to his place before coming back."

At his words, Chen Qiulan and Sun Cui exchanged a glance, somewhat understanding each other’s thoughts.

"I suspect Mrs. Cui’s wheelchair was given by Wu Er," Mother Lin clicked her tongue, her face showing dislike.

Wu Er comes to their stall every once in a while for food, but she’s never pegged him to be that sort of man.

Thinking of his wife, Mother Lin’s disgust intensified. Wu Er’s wife, Mrs. Huang, was only twenty-two years old. She currently sells vegetables in the market to support herself. Mrs. Huang was kind and reliable, which was why they tended to buy a lot of their vegetables from her, and engaged in small chats when they got familiar.

Mrs. Huang too has mentioned that she ran away with Wu Er, effectively abandoning her family. In a way, it was like she married beneath her status. Even after being married for several years, her family was still reluctant to visit her.

Now that Wu Er barely got a small position in Hongfu Building, he’s already fooling around.

It’s utterly disgusting.

"That Wu Er is truly inhumane," Sun Cui muttered, feeling a sense of injustice.

"This is others’ family business. We can’t meddle in it. It’s hard for even an uncorrupted official to settle a dispute within a family. We can’t say more than necessary."

Father Lin sighed, and then everyone fell silent and continued eating their dinner.
