Becoming the Villain's Discarded Wife
Chapter 191: The Big White Rat

Chapter 191: Chapter 191: The Big White Rat

After spending some time at the Shen family’s house and arranging for the next catch-up, Nanzhi and Shen Wenchen headed home with the three kids in tow.

They shop till they dropped on the way. By the time they arrived at the Lin residence, the kids’ hands were filled with goods.

"Nannan, I’ll come find you later."

Shen Wenchen dropped them off at home, not forgetting to promise a visit before he left.

Remembering what happened the previous night, Nanzhi’s face turned red. She peeked at him coldly before closing the gate to the courtyard.

"Auntie, can we eat the toffee caramel now?"

Lin Jian placed his things on the table, expectantly looking up at her with big eyes.

"Go ahead, but each of you can only have one skewer, we’re having dinner soon."

"Okay!"

Nanzhi went to the kitchen to cook, while Lin’s father came home with his two sons.

Upon seeing the food on the table and the three kids with caramel smeared all over their mouths, Lin Yicheng first turned to his own son.

"Zihan, what happened? Where’s your aunt?"

"Uncle brought us shopping. Aunt is cooking."

Lin Zihan grinned, half of the things on the table were edibles!

After Nanzhi finished cooking, she asked her father if she should bring some food over for her mother and sisters-in-law, but Lin’s father shook his head.

"No need, no need, your mother and sisters-in-law can cook something themselves."

"What kind of food are mother and sisters-in-law selling?"

Nanzhi was a bit curious.

After all, all she knew were stalls that sold noodles and at most, dumplings.

But these snack stalls shouldn’t be so popular at night.

"Just some noodles and round food."

"Round food?"

Nanzhi was taken aback.

What exactly was this ’round food’?

How come she had never heard of it?

"I can’t explain it either. Your eldest sister-in-law came up with it. Their business started to improve only after they introduced this ’round food’."

Lin’s father was reminiscing while eating about when they had just moved to Yan City.

Although they had the help of Lin Fu, they couldn’t always rely on others, especially with their big family. They couldn’t survive solely on remaining rations.

It was only when his wife noticed that most of the sellers on the streets were women that he made a pushcart, which allowed his wife and daughter-in-law to start running their own business.

He took his two sons to do odd jobs, and later when someone liked their cart, he began to involve them in carpentry.

Gradually, their carpentry business flourished.

His wife started to worry.

Their food stall’s business was neither good nor bad initially, they only earned around fifty wen after deducting the cost.

There were too many people doing business in Yan City, and one could encounter seven to eight noodle stalls just by strolling along the street.

Finally, it was the unexpected introduction of ’round food’ by his eldest daughter-in-law that fired up their own business.

Every time he thought of these, Lin’s father would stroke his chin reminiscing, and by the time he remembered to eat, all that was left on the table were empty dishes.

"Goodbye Grandpa~"

Lin Jian ate slowly. Seeing that his grandpa finally came back to his senses, he was afraid that he was being out-eaten, so he quickly scooped the last bit of rice into his mouth.

Then he put down his bowl and chopsticks, dashed towards the backyard.

Since everyone was busy, the tasks of daily cooking and washing dishes had become a rostered duty.

Whoever got home first would cook. If none of them wanted to, they would go and eat at a small food stall. The dishes would be washed by the last person to finish eating.

Normally, Lin Jian was the one to wash the dishes seven out of ten times because he dawdled while eating. But today, surprisingly, it was their grandfather who was the last to finish, so the little fellow left the table and happily went to play.

Today, he surprisingly didn’t have to wash the dishes!

He was going to play with the wooden sword his uncle had bought him!

But just as he took a couple of steps, before he even entered the house, Lin Zihan pulled him back out.

"?"

He was about to ask him what he was doing when he saw Lin Zihan raise his hand and make a shushing gesture.

He dragged him into his study, before finally saying, "They’ve only just come home. Why don’t you let your brother talk to your aunt alone?"

Lin Jian nodded, but couldn’t help but eye the wooden sword he had hidden in the house.

"Alright, have you done the homework assigned by Master Du?"

Lin Zihan gave his younger brother a sideways glance. All his brother ever thought about was playing. He didn’t seem to worry about getting his palms beaten after the holidays were over.

In the room, Shen Zhiyu was clinging to Nanzhi, trying to catch up on all the time he had lost to his father that afternoon.

"Mother, do you want some water?"

"Mother, do you want some pastries?"

"Mother, are you cold?"

"Mother..."

After hearing the word ’Mother’ eight times out of ten sentences, Nanzhi started to feel a dull thud in her temples.

"Zhiyu."

"Hmm?"

Upon hearing his mother calling him, Shen Zhiyu’s spirits immediately perked up.

"Zhiyu, don’t worry. Mother will not leave Zhiyu again."

Nanzhi sighed and pulled the little fellow into her arms.

"Hmm."

The little guy buried his head in his mother’s chest, his voice sounding a bit muffled.

"It’s just...just that I missed Mother so much. Mother, don’t get annoyed with Zhiyu."

"I know Zhiyu missed me. I’ve missed our Zhiyu too. I won’t get annoyed with you."

Patting the little fellow’s shoulder lightly, Nanzhi felt a prickle in her nose.

She had missed another two years of Zhiyu’s growing up.

"Mother, can you tell me a story?"

"Sure."

Nanzhi nodded and began the story of ’Sun Wukong’s Three Battles with the White Bone Spirit’. Before she finished, the little guy was already sound asleep, clutching her sleeve tightly, unwilling to let go.

Looking at the tear stains on his face, Nanzhi’s heart ached.

Zhiyu was always so well-behaved, too well-behaved for a child.

After covering him with a blanket, Nanzhi silently slipped out of the room, fearing she might wake him.

Seeing Nanzhi come out through the window, Lin Jian put down his book. He could hardly keep from jumping up.

Now that auntie had come out, he could go back inside and play!

Watching his younger brother, Lin Zihan shrugged. He had done his best. If his brother got his palms beaten when school resumed, it wouldn’t be his fault.

The night was a bit chilly, so Nanzhi wrapped herself in a coat and sat at the table, looking at the stars.

The stars were dazzlingly beautiful.

Suddenly, she saw a silhouette leap across the roof like a large white rat. She almost died of fright.

When she realized it was a person, Nanzhi felt something was off. Shen Wenchen, being so big, didn’t seem like he would be so creepy.

"Sister Nanzhi?"

The youth was still dressed in white, looking no different from two years ago.
