Becoming the Villain's Discarded Wife
Chapter 184: Bitterness

Chapter 184: Chapter 184: Bitterness

Seeing the face of her mother growing paler, Shen Zhiyu quickly poured her a glass of water.

"Mother, what’s wrong with you?"

"No, nothing." Nanzhi patted the head of the little one, her smile somewhat stiff.

If it really is the original plot that would let herself die, does she really have no choice but to accept her fate?

Then why did she return to this world?

Looking at the teardrop-shaped scar on her wrist, Nanzhi pursed her lips, thinking that if last time she traveled here in spirit, this time she must have done so bodily...

"Mother?"

The little one’s voice was filled with worry. Nanzhi then realized that she had lost herself in her thoughts and quickly asked in an eased tone: "Zhiyu, how has our household been these past two years?"

"Grandma and aunt are running a food stall, uncle and grandpa have opened a carpentry shop, and I, along with Brother Doudou and Brother Maomao, are going to school. The teacher even praised us for being smart."

The little one sat down next to Nanzhi, excitedly recounting the interesting things that happened during these two years.

He spoke about them studying in school, helping out at the food stall, taking trips outside Yan City, and even about their two hens at home that could lay six eggs a day, all of which he shared with Nanzhi.

Watching him gesticulate while sharing these stories, Nanzhi recalls the hard times he had under her care in those three years, and her determination grows stronger.

She must live well, grow up with Zhiyu, and never leave him alone again!

Screw the plot. Even if she can’t defy the Heavenly Path of this world, she must let Shen Wenchen protect the child.

"Mother, did you miss Zhiyu?"

After speaking for a long time, the little one looked up at Nanzhi with expectant eyes.

Zhiyu’s clean, little face still had a bit of chubby baby fat on it, and his eyes were as bright as the stars.

"Yes, I missed Zhiyu." Nanzhi stretched out her arm and held the little one in her arms.

Thinking of the times when she was crying and Zhiyu was softly calling out to her, Nanzhi felt her eyes stinging.

Zhiyu was her son, her most cherished treasure.

Having not seen his mother for a long time, the little one only reluctantly went to his room to sleep when it was late into the night.

"Mother, can Zhiyu wake you up tomorrow morning?"

"Yes, Zhiyu should go to sleep now. Mother is waiting for you to come over in the morning."

Watching the little one’s excited figure, Nanzhi couldn’t hold back and began to silently sob.

Shen Wenchen sat on the roof, listening to the sobbing from inside the house, his heart felt as if it was being pricked, bringing a tingling sensation.

After hesitating for a while, he eventually leapt off the roof and headed inside. He missed her.

Nanzhi, who was crying on the table, fell asleep.

It was still somewhat cold in March. Shen Wenchen bent over and carefully lifted the sleeping Nanzhi onto the bed.

After tucking her in and taking off her braids, Shen Wenchen sat quietly at the bedside, lost in thought as he looked at Nanzhi’s face.

Two years ago on that night, he and Lin Ercheng watched as Nannan’s body turned into a white mist and disappeared with the wind and snow.

All he could do was console himself, thinking that perhaps Nannan had returned home, returned to her own world.

During his days in Yan City, General Song had sent several letters asking him to return. Half a year ago, the followers of the second prince had all been captured. Yan City only needed to keep one person to guard it.

Heading back, certainly he could have a better future.

Shen Wenchen gave the opportunity to his twelfth brother, while he himself stayed in Yan City and held the position of a sixth-rank general.

He wanted to wait, wait for Nannan to return.

Fortunately, he was able to wait until this day.

The person on the bed seemed to be having an unquiet sleep.

Shen Wenchen dared not light a lamp, fearing the brightness might disturb Nanzhi’s sleep. As the wind outside was strong, he dared not open the window either. Thus, inside the room one could only make out objects in the faint moonlight shining through the window.

After watching for a moment, he prepared to stand up and leave, only to feel his wrist being grabbed as he was about to rise.

Caught by surprise, Shen Wenchen quickly lowered his head, staring directly into the bright eyes of Nanzhi.

She guessed it, he would come.

Shen Wenchen hesitated, unable to speak at first.

"Are you leaving?"

Nanzhi’s voice was muffled, a signal of her discontent.

"I am not."

Upon saying this, Shen Wenchen sat back down beside the bed, gazing at Nanzhi, waiting for her next words.

"Do you remember when you left?"

Nanzhi lay sideways on the bed, her long black hair spread out fluffily, making her skin appear even fairer.

Shen Wenchen, a martial artist, with his superior vision and hearing sensed his wife’s melancholy but said nothing.

"Back then, Zhiyu was barely five months old, you packed your bow and arrows early in the morning to hunt in the mountains to nourish my health, rubbing my hair before leaving to assure me not to worry." Nanzhi mumbled, her eyes appearing to be reliving that moment.

"I waited for you, day after day, for many days. The villagers searched for you in the mountains, only to bring back your blood-stained, tattered clothing. My mother-in-law fell ill and never recovered, and my father-in-law was not long after bedridden from strain.

I waited day and night for your return. Back then, Zhiyu was so tiny, but he was a good boy, simply gazing at me with big eyes every day without a whimper."

As Nanzhi recounted this, tears welled up in her eyes. Her physical health had worsened after bearing their child, but she still had to take care of all the household duties.

She sold every sellable item in their house, even her new cotton quilt from her own family.

Despite her efforts, she still lost her parents-in-law. She had no choice but to borrow silver from her parents to arrange their funerals.

The villagers took pity on them and occasionally provided them with some food.

However, most would talk behind her back, accusing her of being a curse. Her husband and in-laws had all perished, they said, because of her.

Zhiyu would always call her mom with a cooing sound. That always stopped her from questioning why she was alive, instead of following her in-laws into the grave.

"Nannan..."

Shen Wenchen’s voice sounded almost pleading. How could he not know the hardship Nanzhi had suffered for him?

In his past life, he fell off a cliff and was saved by General Song, barely keeping his life.

Although he survived, he became an "idiot", not knowing his own name or surname. Even his name, Shen Wenchen, was given to him by General Song.

Later, he was bestowed noble rank and sent people back to Qingyun County in an attempt to find his family. However, the last clue led to Lihua Village.

Due to a former drought disaster, Lihua Village had been abandoned.

Those who might have been found had all died before they could reach them.

Later, he met Su Tao. He was mysteriously drawn to her whenever he got close to her. He tried to keep distance, but Su Tao always appeared around him.

Contemplating his actions thereafter, Shen Wenchen was consumed by a wave of despair.

The debt he owed Nannan and his parents was simply too great.

"Shen Wenchen, those years were so hard for me!" Nanzhi weeped, her voice hoarse and broken.

"I couldn’t even bring myself to die!"

Listening to his wife’s sorrowful voice, Shen Wenchen felt as if his heart was being scooped out with a dull knife.

"Nannan, everything will get better..."

Shen Wenchen held his wife, who was now sobbing uncontrollably, tightly in his arms. It still wasn’t too late for anything.
