Chapter 164: Chapter 164_1

"Big brother, second brother."

Shen Wenchen’s expression was unsightly, with coldness in his eyes.

"Brother-in-law."

The two brothers nodded in acknowledgment, and only then did all three turn their attention to the Shen Family’s donkey cart.

Before they could say anything else, they saw Ms. Li and Shen Zhong get off the cart, one after the other.

Ms. Li’s face was streaked with tears, while Shen Zhong looked utterly exhausted. Seeing Lin Yicheng and the other two looking at him, he could only nod awkwardly.

"I just knew it, his wife is definitely going to stir up some trouble," Lin Yicheng yawned and patted his younger brother on the shoulder.

"Big brother, second brother, go to sleep. I’ll keep watch," said Shen Wenchen.

"You’ve had a hard journey too. Get some good rest tonight, and we can take turns keeping watch tomorrow," Lin Ercheng spoke up, and Shen Wenchen, having nothing more to say, nodded and went back to the mule cart.

These past few days he really hadn’t rested well, and tonight he needed a good sleep to continue the journey tomorrow.

Lin Yicheng only reminded his younger brother before he too went back to the cart to sleep.

Lin Ercheng sighed quietly as he watched Shen Zhong and his wife, adding two more logs to the fire.

Shen Zhong had a headache seeing his wife crying and wailing.

"What’s the matter now?"

"Shen Zhong, what rubbish are you talking about?" Ms. Li looked incredulous. "Your mother is biased! Aren’t you my husband? Shouldn’t you stand by me?"

"Li Lian, can you sincerely say that our family has wronged you since you married me?" Shen Zhong also lost his temper, pointing at Ms. Li’s nose.

"But your mother is indeed biased!"

"Miaomiao is her own daughter! Since you came into this family, what has Miaomiao had that you haven’t? Don’t you think mother doesn’t know about every trip you make to your family to take things? You’re just envious that the Lin Family lives better than ours! But you weren’t born with their fortune!"

Shen Zhong said all this in one breath and felt some regret in his heart, as it was the first time in more than two years of marriage that they had fought so fiercely.

But thinking of what had just happened, his temples throbbed with pain.

Their donkey cart was always smaller than the Lin Family’s mule cart. Miaomiao usually slept in Ms. Lin’s mule cart, so squeezing four people into their own cart wasn’t too bad.

But now there was Wang Jingzhi in the Lin Family cart, and it was troublesome enough needing others to take care of him, plus Shen Wenchen had also returned. They couldn’t well let Miaomiao continue to squeeze in with other people.

Only today his wife seemed crazed, antagonizing Miaomiao openly and covertly. Mother just glared at her, and she made a scene insisting Miaomiao sleep in the Lin Family’s mule cart.

Mother couldn’t bear it anymore and slapped her.

"So this is what you think!" Ms. Li looked at Shen Zhong with teary eyes.

"I, I..."

The couple’s argument was overheard not only by Lin Ercheng but also by the refugees resting around them.

Looking at Shen Zhong flustered and coaxing Ms. Li, Lin Ercheng curled his lips but felt fortunate that his wife was a good woman.

In the mule cart, Sun Cui suddenly shuddered in her sleep. Lin’s mother, who had just been woken up by the noise, hadn’t fallen asleep yet. Seeing her daughter-in-law’s movement, she reached out to pull up the blanket for her and then continued to sleep, hugging her grandson.

After getting on the cart, Shen Wenchen looked at the sleeping mother and son with a content expression.

That’s what they say on the other side, isn’t it? A wife and children make a warm bed?

Carefully moving Little Zhiyu to the side, Shen Wenchen then held Nanzhi in his arms, satisfied to continue sleeping.

Ms. Li made a fuss all night long, and sitting by the fire, Lin Ercheng listened to gossip all night. It was rare for him not to doze off, and seeing the dawn break, he cleaned out his ears and got up to wake everyone.

While calling people, he couldn’t help but marvel that Shen Zhong had really brought home a formidable woman.

After making a fuss all night, she didn’t even sound hoarse.

Sun Cui woke up to find her husband smiling at her, nearly fainting from fright.

"What are you doing!"

Sun Cui patted her chest, then gave Lin Ercheng a look.

"It’s nothing, I just feel that marrying you is my good fortune."

Lin Ercheng said with a giggle.

Ms. Lin and Chen Qiulan had just woken up and felt goosebumps all over watching the couple acting sweetly.

Feeling the gaze of her mother-in-law and sister-in-law, Sun Cui blushed and playfully scolded,

"Alright, alright, go out! What nonsense are you talking about so early in the morning!"

Lin Ercheng chuckled and knew it was not nice to behave like this, so he quickly let down the curtain.

"Who would’ve thought our second son is quite the sweet-talker," Ms. Lin teased, looking at her daughter-in-law.

Chen Qiulan also covered her mouth and snickered.

"Mother!"

"Alright, alright, no more teasing. Let’s go down and cook, eat up and continue on our way. The weather looks promising today."

The three women wrapped themselves in coats and got off, leaving the two little children to continue sleeping in the cart.

Lin Yicheng was busying himself with boiling water, and he nodded with a smile as he watched them get off.

Ms. Lin, however, went to Lin Ercheng. She hadn’t heard much of the commotion last night, and now she was somewhat curious. What was Ms. Li fussing about in the middle of the night?

"Second son, what’s going on with those two from the Shen family?"

Lin Ercheng laughed at the curious look on his mother’s face.

"Mother, it’s just some minor issues. If you really want to know, just ask Auntie directly."

"You little rascal." Ms. Lin gave Lin Ercheng’s arm a twist and then hummed as she returned to the fire.

"Why haven’t Fatty and the others come down yet?"

Lin Father frowned, noticing that his daughter’s mule cart showed no signs of activity.

"Let them sleep a bit longer; it won’t do any harm," Ms. Lin muttered, accepting the hot water handed over by Lin Father.

When Nanzhi woke up, she felt a stiffness in her neck, and as she drowsily tried to turn over, she felt as if something was restraining her.

She opened her eyes to see a chin that didn’t belong to Zhiyu resting on her forehead and was momentarily stunned.

It took a while for her to realize that Shen Wenchen had returned.

Looking down, she saw Shen Wenchen holding her tightly, his normally firm arm now serving as a pillow underneath her head.

"Mother, I need to pee..."

Little Zhiyu rubbed his eyes and called out to Nanzhi softly.

"Zhiyu’s a good boy; mother will take you to pee," Nanzhi said as she tried to wriggle out of Shen Wenchen’s embrace, but despite her efforts, she couldn’t break free.

"Mother, no need to go..."

Little Zhiyu mumbled and then lay back down to continue sleeping.

Nanzhi, however, felt a sudden sinking feeling in her heart.

No need to go?

Suspecting the little one had wet the bed, Nanzhi reached out and pinched Shen Wenchen’s waist.

Feeling a pinch on his waist, Shen Wenchen finally opened his eyes with a frown.

Seeing Nanzhi looking at him indignantly, he felt somewhat sheepish and chuckled, "Nannan, you’re up so early..."

"Let me go!"

Withdrawing his hand, Shen Wenchen touched his nose, wondering why Nannan was so fiery this early in the morning.
