Chapter 147: Chapter 147: Xiaohe

Two hours passed while he finished reading the novel, his face complex and indescribable.

In the book, Nannan still died, Zhiyu was raised by Shen Miaomiao, and he himself fell from the horse due to fatigue during his journey, rendered amnesic after being saved by someone, and fell in love at first sight with Su Tao when he reached Yan City...

Thinking that his life of many decades could possibly only be a storybook, Wenchen felt an indescribable emotion enveloping him.

But what about Nannan?

She originally lived in this world, so how did she end up in a book?

And why did she willingly abandon everything here to return to those years of disaster and famine...

If he decided to return, would he actually do what the book described, lose his memory again and abandon them, mother and child, to endure hardships?

...

Inside the mule cart, Little Zhiyu coughed twice and woke up. As soon as he opened his eyes, he saw the young man staring at him.

Realizing that Zhiyu had woken up, the young man heaved a huge sigh of relief.

It’s good to be back, it’s good to be back.

The kid sat up and the first thing he did was look at Nanzhi who was lying beside him.

Seeing that she was still unconscious, his little face went pale as he reached out his small hand to touch Nanzhi’s cheek.

When he felt the chill, the child was about to burst into tears, but he held them back.

Mum said she’ll come back.

Little men shouldn’t cry.

He sniffled and held back his tears, then sat himself properly.

Watching the child’s action, Shen Miaomiao also sighed with relief. She was worried something would happen to Zhiyu. Now that he had woken up, everything was fine...

The sky was becoming faintly white, and Shen Miaomiao got off the cart to prepare food, leaving only the three of them inside.

"Brother River Clam, why isn’t my mum back yet?" The child looked at the teenager with a bewildered expression. A whole night had passed, but his mother was still not back.

The teenager was taken aback and took a few steps back.

How did he know his identity?

"How do you know who I am?"

Little Zhiyu didn’t answer, he just kept staring at him. It was only when he gave him goosebumps that he conceded: "It’s not time yet. Don’t worry, your mum will definitely come back."

As the young man spoke, sweat started to bead on his forehead.

How did he know why Lin Nanzhi hadn’t come back yet?

Although he was able to manage things here, it wasn’t his place to interfere in that world. However, it should be soon. As long as nothing happened to this body, everything would be fine...

Nanzhi was tossing and turning in bed, unable to sleep, so she forced herself to close her eyes and count sheep.

"Nanzhi, you’ve gone to bed so early?"

Xu Lin looked curiously at her. Nanzhi went out once and then went back to bed. It felt like she could never get enough sleep.

Nanzhi didn’t respond, she just hummed for a while before finally falling asleep.

Zhiyu was eating porridge in a small bowl. Suddenly, he noticed his mother’s hand move. He immediately put down the bowl and went over.

"Mum, Mum!"

The child climbed over to Nanzhi on his hands and knees and burst into tears when he saw her open her eyes.

She already had a headache, and with the gold pellets thrown by the child, she could hardly open her eyes.

Fearing he would continue crying, the young man quickly took out a handkerchief and handed it to him. Zhiyu wiped his mother’s face and when he saw her open her eyes again, he chuckled: "Mum is back! Mum didn’t lie to me!"

Looking at the child’s runny nose, Nanzhi was touched.

The first time she saw Zhiyu was in a similar scene.

The little boy, dirty and tearstained, was crying out for his mother. She had imagined raising him chubby and rosy-cheeked; now, given his pitiful appearance, Nanzhi forced a lopsided smile. "Zhiyu, darling, wipe your nose. You’re getting it on mommy’s face."

The tense atmosphere lifted for a moment. Red-faced, Zhiyu wiped his nose. At that, Shen Miaomiao, who had been driving the mule cart, stopped it and peeked in. "Sister Nanzhi!"

The young girl’s voice was filled with joy. Nanzhi looked up, but the bright-eyed girl was now alarmingly gaunt, her face almost skeletal and waxen in color.

"Miaomiao, thank you for your hard work."

Hearing her words, Miaomiao’s previously cheerful face crumbled, yet she fought back her tears. "It’s not difficult at all, Sister Nanzhi. As long as you’re awake."

Though they were home now, Nanzhi was bedridden in the mule cart during the next few days due to her long illness. Miaomiao had to support her even for basic necessities.

About the young boy, the only thing he would say was that his surname was He, and that Xiaohe was an acceptable address.

With Xiaohe taking on the task of driving the cart, Shen Miaomiao was slightly relieved.

She was just a sixteen-year-old girl, after all. She had done well simply by shouldering this responsibility for eleven days.

On October 23rd, the temperature dropped sharply.

Two adults and a child huddled under a thick blanket.

As occasional chilly drafts came in, Nanzhi shivered.

Miaomiao glanced at her with concern. Nanzhi was still weak; she shouldn’t catch a cold again...

"I’m fine." Nanzhi sniffed and continued to sew.

The skins of a few rabbits she had previously caught were cleaned by her big brothers.

Initially, she was worried about Zhiyu being cold in winter due to a lack of thick quilts at home. Her plan was to make him a warm jacket to prevent him from catching a cold.

But later, Shen Wenchen and the others had brought back quite a few rabbits. Some of their skins were torn, but none were wasted, and now they were coming in handy.

Sewing together the pieces of rabbit skin and then carefully incorporating it into a garment helped to keep the wearer warm without showing it off.

Nanzhi inspected the newly-made jacket and nodded in satisfaction.

"Zhiyu, try it on."

The boy took his mom’s homemade jacket with a look of excitement.

Though it wasn’t the most aesthetically pleasing garment, it was warm.

"Thank you, mom."

Shen Zhiyu, wearing his new jacket, beamed with joy. This was a new jacket made by his mom!

Although only one side was new, it was still a new jacket!

Nanzhi, looking at the remaining rabbit skins, generously gave Miaomiao four pieces to sew inside her own clothes. Meanwhile, she began figuring out how to make a thicker pair of trousers for Zhiyu.

An adult could put up with the chill, but it wouldn’t do for a small child to catch a cold.

Xiaohe, sitting on top of the carriage, was in high spirits. He knew this time he would succeed!

When Shen Wenchen awoke, he saw an old man sitting by his side. Upon seeing him wake up, the old man, trembling with age, left the room.

Shortly after, an old woman came in.

"So the lad’s awake?"

Noticing that he remained silent and bewildered, the old woman’s brow furrowed. Was the boy out of his mind?

"Boy, boy?"

"Old lady, where am I?"

Shen Wenchen felt disoriented, and a sharp pain in his lower back made it hard for him to move.

"You’re in Xingxiang County, Wine Gully."

The old woman looked him over again and, relieved that he did not seem demented, finally breathed a sigh of relief.

At least she hadn’t brought a fool home.
