Becoming the Villain's Discarded Wife -
Chapter 137: Torrential Rain
Chapter 137: Chapter 137: Torrential Rain
Chi Sheng had claimed that taking this route to Yan City would save them over ten days. And since this route did not pass through Xin City, it would thereby avoid many refugees.
But now, as he glanced at the putrid bodies scattered on the ground, even Lin Yicheng turned pale.
Especially when the mule cart trampled these bodies, he felt as if he could hear the sound of pus spurting out from their swollen skin.
If Lin Yicheng turned pale at the sight, then Nanzhi, trailing behind in his cart, could barely keep her eyes open.
But all she could do was guide the mule towards flatter ground, fearing to crush any more remnants.
After they had travelled quietly for about an hour, the number of bodies on the roadside gradually decreased, and now, only severed limbs could be spotted occasionally.
As the nauseating stench lingering around her nose slowly faded, only then did Nanzhi wipe off the beads of sweat on her forehead.
Not a single person was spotted along the way. Now, Nanzhi felt her heart hanging, as there were still people visible when they had descended from the mountain. Thinking back to the fork in the road they had passed, she froze.
Could it be that they had missed the right path and that was why there were no people around?
But as she thought back to what Chi Sheng had said about taking the path to the right at the fork, she assured herself they hadn’t made a mistake.
Caught in contemplation, she was startled when the mule cart underneath her suddenly halted, nearly causing her to tumble.
Regaining her bearings and rising to her feet, she saw the two older sisters in the front cart poking their heads out.
Chen Qiulan and Sun Cui had been sewing clothes in the cart when it had suddenly stopped. Qiulan had nearly pricked her finger from the jolt. She stuck her head out and asked, "Ercheng, what’s going on?"
Ercheng, who had just watched his brother stop the mule cart without understanding what was happening, craned his neck and replied, "Sister-in-law, I’m not sure why my big brother stopped the cart. Please wait inside, I’ll go check."
"Be careful," Sun Cui admonished her husband as he moved.
"I know."
Responding to his wife, Ercheng jumped from the cart and trotted towards his brother.
"Big brother, what’s going on?" No sooner had Ercheng managed to circle around the cart, then the sight before him sent a shiver down his spine. He turned to look at his elder brother standing on the cart beam.
"Big brother, this..."
Lin Yicheng’s face paled even further. Just moments ago, he’d felt relieved that the bodies progressively disappearing from the road meant fewer obstacles. But as soon as they turned the bend, they saw a twisted figure lying on the ground.
The "person’s" head was completely smashed, it seemed they had died only recently. Blood and brains were splattered all around, and large portions of flesh were carved from the arms and thighs, revealing stark white bones and red, raw flesh. The only difference from the other body they’d seen, perhaps, was the dull grey clothes still clinging to the body.
"Perhaps we should find another route," Lin Yicheng suggested with a tremble in his voice. He understood that cannibalism was inevitable amongst the refugees, knowing about it and seeing it, however, were two entirely different experiences.
"Okay," Ercheng agreed, glancing at the gruesome corpse.
The person looked like he had only recently died. He feared the assailants might still be nearby...
Seeing the mule cart in front take a different direction, though perplexed, Nanzhi too changed the direction of her cart.
Now the order was Shen Zhong pulling the donkey cart at the front, followed by Nanzhi, then Ercheng and finally Lin Yicheng.
After some discussion, they decided to return to the previous fork in the road. Perhaps they could bypass this gruesome scene taking the other route.
Leading the way ahead, Shen Zhong had to contain his urge to vomit. Out of fear of rolling over the maggot-infested chunks of flesh, he kept the donkey cart’s pace slower than before.
Just as they began their journey back, Nanzhi felt a chill on her forehead. Next, the pitter-patter of rain started hitting the cart.
The weather had already turned cold, and now without warning, it started to rain. And judging by the looks of it, it was going to get heavier. Nanzhi could feel her heart pounding in her chest.
She didn’t know why she felt so uneasy, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that there was bad news in the offing.
Something big was about to happen...
Gathering her wits about her, Nanzhi shrank herself inside the cart and continued the journey.
After a difficult journey, they finally reached the previous fork in the road, the light rain now becoming torrential.
The large raindrops pelting her face caused her to grind her teeth in pain. Just as she was about to wipe off the rain that had trickled into the corner of her eyes, a thunderous sound echoed from the surroundings. This was followed by a slight vibration.
Before Nanzhi could process what was happening, the old people’s faces drained of color.
"Quick, head to higher ground!"
Barely had their father’s voice faded, when the mule pulling the cart neighed in fright. It spurred into action and bolted towards the fork in the road.
Following the first mule’s lead, the Shen family’s donkey also sped up. However, the mule used by Nanzhi stayed frozen on the spot, refusing to move a single step.
Suspecting it was either a flood or debris flow, Nanzhi felt cold sweat breaking out all over her body. To worsen matters, the stubborn mule still refused to budge.
Seeing Nanzhi’s cart stationary, the Lin family and Shen family grew anxious.
"Fatty girl! Hurry up and come over!"
"Miaomiao! Come quickly!"
Shen Miaomiao had been dozing off in the cart. Suddenly hearing someone call her name, she drowsily lifted the curtain. But as she lifted one corner and poked out her head, her face was instantly soaked by the downpour.
Before Shen Miaomiao could react, Nanzhi watched as two trees fell between her cart and her brothers’.
The loud thud of the trunk hitting the ground splattered mud all over Nanzhi’s leg. At this point, the mule came back to its senses, whipped its head back and forth, and suddenly took a sharp turn, barrelling down the path they had just taken.
As the rain washed the ground, the scenery before Lin Yicheng became blurry. In the hazy view, he could only dimly see their sister’s mule cart getting farther and farther away.
"Fatty girl!"
Ercheng shouted, his voice drowned in the torrential rain.
By this time, Nanzhi was in a state of shock. Was the mule acting crazy?
After several unsuccessful attempts to stop the mule, it stubbornly continued to sprint ahead, as if chased by some monstrous flood or beast.
Yicheng and Ercheng tried to move the trees blocking the road to catch up with Shen Miaomiao and Nanzhi, but just as they were about to get off the cart, they saw dark water beginning to flow down the road from where they had just come.
With a start, the brothers quickly climbed back on the cart and bolted towards the left path.
This area was situated in a hollow of the mountains - a place prone to flooding.
Nanzhi felt as if her buttocks were blooming in pain, and her hands bled from the friction with the ropes.
The rain was too heavy to see the road clearly, she could only numbly hold onto the ropes to prevent falling off.
Having a rough idea of what was happening, Shen Miaomiao quickly grabbed Shen Zhiyu who had been jolted awake by the chaos and huddled in the cart.
