Becoming the Villain's Discarded Wife -
Chapter 135: Found the Husband!
Chapter 135: Chapter 135: Found the Husband!
The winding road down the mountain led Nanzhi to doubt if Chi Sheng was trying to trick them. However, remembering the few pounds of vegetables still left in the carriage, she immediately dismissed the thought.
Since they intended to trick them, why would they bother with sending food?
They zigzagged their way down the mountain road until it was nearly noon before they emerged from the forest.
Oddly enough, the road that was wide enough for a cart just a moment ago vanished as they turned around, leaving only a dense forest in sight.
Chi Sheng was concerned about their safety, so he deliberately pointed out another small road behind the mountain for them. This way, they could take another route to Yan City, bypassing Xin City to avoid most of the displaced people.
The weather started to cool down, and even with the bright sun overhead, the travellers didn’t feel particularly uncomfortable.
Nanzhi felt especially relieved. To her, the journey was now more manageable with the cool weather, unlike in the past when her clothes would be drenched multiple times from perspiration under the scorching sun.
"I must say, the route Chi chose is quite excellent. We didn’t encounter many refugees on the way," commented Lin’s father, lifting the carriage curtain for a peek, before speaking with a gleeful tone.
"It’s merely good luck. Had we been unlucky, and run into some malicious bandits, we couldn’t have survived if taken hostage, let alone avoid being imprisoned as food supplies," said Lin’s mother, handing her husband a jacket.
"No need, no need, I’m healthy," protested Lin’s father, trying to return the coat. But upon catching sight of his wife’s stern gaze, he promptly closed his mouth.
"Do I not yet know your physical condition?" With a roll of her eyes, Lin’s mother snuggled Maomao closer and wrapped a coat around him as well.
Upon hearing this, Lin’s father merely adjusted the garment. Although he still considered himself in good health, the persistent ache in his back reminded him of his advancing age.
Nanzhi called Shen Miaomiao to the carriage to keep Zhiyu company, while she took on the role of driving the carriage herself.
In the carriage, Shen Miaomiao and Zhiyu sat wrapped in blankets, being careful not to make much noise. They occasionally whispered to each other, but most of the time, Zhiyu was just playing with his small wooden knife, while Shen Miaomiao dozed off.
Not until his stomach grumbled did Lin Yicheng find a spacious place to stop the carriage.
As soon as the four carriages stopped, they each took out their dry rations to eat.
At that moment, Xiaoqi was venturing through the woods, carrying Yueyue.
Xiaoqi was intent on continuing his journey with Yueyue on his back that morning. Unexpectedly, they came across several men dismembering a young girl’s corpse. Despite being careful, they were noticed.
Seeing Xiaoqi and Yueyue, the men’s eyes flashed with a beast-like green gleam.
Xiaoqi dared not slow down and rushed into the woods with Yueyue on his back.
Those men had been local rascals before fleeing. Although they weren’t welcomed in their villages, they banded together during their escape. Initially, they had been getting by through theft, but as starvation set in, they became increasingly desperate.
At that point, the group had not eaten for several days. They tried to eat roots but found them hard to swallow. Their desperate hunger eventually led to the horrifying suggestion of cannibalism.
Unbelievably, no one opposed the gruesome idea, and in less than an hour, they all nodded in agreement.
Though the notion of cannibalism had crossed their minds, they were still too fearful to attack a living person.
After an hour, they set their sights on the dead girl.
The young girl was only around eleven or twelve years old and was exceptionally skinny due to malnutrition. They had seen her travelling with her father the previous day, but this morning, her father was nowhere in sight. They didn’t dare act hastily. After waiting for a while and determining that her father did not plan to return, they dragged the girl’s corpse into the woods to dismember her.
Just as they were about to begin, they saw a boy carrying a young girl, watching them.
Startled by their sudden discovery, the men turned pale and began chasing after the two children.
They couldn’t allow these witnesses to speak of what they had seen!
Seeing the fresh blood splattered on the men, Xiaoqi’s pupils constricted. Gripping Yueyue tightly, he sprinted away.
They were eating a person!
He couldn’t let them catch him!
HIs heart pounded as if it was about to burst out of his chest. Despite Xiaoqi’s rapid pace, he was no match for the men.
After running only a hundred meters or so, the siblings were forced to the ground.
"So, you saw all that?" said the leading man, his face adorned with dark, menacing features. Seeing his repulsive face, Xiaoqi could only clutch Yueyue tighter, fearing she would be frightened.
Seeing that the young child remained silent, the man nodded to his companion, a signal for him to seize them.
Yueyue, being afflicted with tuberculosis, hadn’t eaten or taken any medicine for two days. Not only was her stomach empty, but the vigorous jostling and the overpowering scent of blood made her vomit a small puddle of blood.
Upon seeing the young girl vomiting blood, the man who was about to seize them stopped abruptly.
Was it possible the little girl was ill?
Worried, he looked at his leader for guidance.
The leader was also fearful. He had heard that during times of famine, people would often contract strange diseases, and once infected, it could be fatal.
As Yueyue continued to violently cough up blood, it sounded as if she were trying to expel her internal organs.
"Boss, let’s retreat for now. These two kids won’t last more than two days. They’ll probably be eaten by someone else tomorrow. We mustn’t let that little girl infect us with whatever she has," a slightly plump man hastily suggested. Despite being a lowlife, he was still concerned about his safety.
After a moment’s glance at the two children on the ground, the leading man spat out, "We’re leaving."
Seeing them depart, Xiaoqi tenderly wiped the blood from Yueyue’s mouth before guiltily saying, "I’m sorry... it’s all my fault. I should’ve protected you better, Yueyue. Be good, brother will go find something for you to eat."
"I’m fine, brother," Yueyue’s frail voice wheezed out, her pale face trying to muster a smile to reassure her brother.
Xiaoqi felt a sting in his nose, tears welling at the back of his eyes. He heard a child’s voice coming from nearby.
"Daddy! I’ve found my husband!"
