It wasn’t until the break of dawn that Nanzhi finally heard some noises outside the door again.

Two men pushed the door open and were startled to see all six people inside the firewood room staring straight at them.

"You, you all woke up so early?"

One darker-skinned man stuttered.

The initially defensive look in Lin’s mother’s eyes paused, why did these bandits look different from what she had imagined?

Though they harbored suspicions, they did not let their guard down.

The younger bandit paused when he saw Nanzhi, scratched his head, and then placed the basket he was carrying on the ground.

"This, this is your morning meal, you all eat."

After he spoke, he quickly pulled the darker man to leave.

"Our children, where have you taken them?"

Nanzhi watched as they began to leave and hurriedly asked.

The dark-skinned man stopped, turned to look at them, and then said, "Don’t worry, the three kids are all fine, and your men too, hurry up and eat."

After that, he didn’t wait for Nanzhi and the others to react and walked away with the younger bandit.

Though they left, the door of the firewood room remained tightly shut, and no matter how long Nanzhi knocked, nobody responded, so she finally had to sit down in frustration.

"I wonder how Doudou is doing now." Chen Qiulan had cried all night and now her eyes were swollen like walnuts, her complexion frighteningly pale.

"Sister-in-law, it’s okay, Doudou and Maomao must be fine," Nanzhi reassured, looking down at the basket on the ground.

Lifting the hemp cloth covering it, inside were seven Black Pancakes and two bamboo tubes filled with water.

Aunt Guihua looked oddly at the Black Pancakes in the basket.

It was a year of famine, how could these bandits afford to give them black wheat to eat?

Nanzhi picked up a pancake and examined it but didn’t notice anything unusual.

Lin’s mother was about to tell her not to eat when she saw Nanzhi break the pancake in half and sniff it.

"Mother, this pancake seems fine..." Nanzhi mused as she looked at the pancake in her hand.

How many people were unable to find food now? She had seen people eating grass roots on the road, yet these bandits were giving hostages black wheat to eat?

The seven people in the firewood room looked at the Black Pancakes in the basket and said nothing more.

Just then, they heard some rustling noises outside, causing everyone to look up towards the door once again.

"Creak—"

The door opened, and instead of the two bandits, a chubby little girl appeared.

Nanzhi and Shen Miaomiao were both startled, but the little girl’s big eyes were smiling.

She glanced at them and then thudded into Nanzhi’s embrace.

"Mother!"

Nanzhi held the chubby little girl in her arms, hearing the gasps of her own mother and sisters-in-law.

When did Little Nanzhi get another daughter?

"Little girl, are you mistaking me for someone else?" Nanzhi tried to push the little girl away gently, wary of hurting her, and quietly asked.

"Mother! I missed you so much." Yuanbao clung to Nanzhi, burying her small face into her neck.

"Mother smells so good!"

Nanzhi stiffened, thinking there might be something wrong with the little girl’s nose.

Though she had bathed a few days ago, that certainly didn’t mean she smelled bad now!

Just as she was about to say something, Nanzhi felt someone tug at her fingertip—turning her head, she saw Shen Miaomiao winking at her, and she instantly nodded in understanding.

The door was wide open, and there was no one guarding outside. Wasn’t this the perfect chance to escape?

Just as Shen Miaomiao was about to step out, the little child who had been clinging to Nanzhi suddenly looked up.

"Mom, why did you only come to find me now?" Yuanbao sniffed, looking up at Nanzhi with big eyes full of anticipation.

"I, I..."

Nanzhi stammered, unable to give an explanation, but Yuanbao didn’t pay it any mind. She continued speaking to herself, "Now that I’ve found my mom, I don’t need those three brothers to stay with me anymore. I’ll ask dad to let them go down the mountain..."

Hearing the girl mention the three brothers, Nanzhi suddenly perked up, hesitating before she quietly asked, "Little girl, are the three brothers you mentioned the ones who came up the mountain last night? Where are they now?"

Yuanbao blinked and thought for a moment before speaking, "Yuanbao will take Mom to see them! Then we’ll find Dad!"

The little girl said this and reached out to pull Nanzhi outside. Hearing that she was going to look for Zhiyu, Nanzhi didn’t say much but extended her hand to be led by her.

Mrs. Lin and the others quickly followed, fearing they might take the wrong path later.

Perhaps it was luck; Little Yuanbao led them through the village, twisting and turning, and before long, she had actually brought them to the place.

"Mom, they are inside there. Now, can we go find Dad?"

Pointing at the door in front of them, Little Yuanbao shook Nanzhi’s hand again.

"I, I want to go in and have a look, may I?" Nanzhi looked at the door, her heart tightening.

How were Zhiyu and the others doing now?

"I want to find Dad!"

Yuanbao looked at her own mom, her little mouth pouting unhappily.

Nanzhi suddenly found herself in a difficult position. If she didn’t comply with the little girl’s request, she was afraid the child’s crying would attract others.

But what about Zhiyu and the others if they really went to find her Dad?

Also, she was not this little girl’s mom. Wouldn’t going to find her Dad blow her cover?

"Miss? Why are you here?" Three men, each carrying a small child, came over, and upon seeing Yuanbao there, immediately called out.

They then saw Nanzhi holding Yuanbao’s hand and the several people beside her and became more alert.

"Miss, please come here."

The men’s voices were low, and their eyes carried a hint of ferocity looking at Nanzhi and the others.

If these women dared to hurt the Miss, they would surely kill them!

"This is my mom! Don’t scare her!" Yuanbao spoke fiercely, softening the hearts of the three men a bit.

However, looking at Nanzhi’s disheveled face, they didn’t offer any more compliments but coaxed in a low voice, "Miss, go back and eat first. We’ll set these three children straight, and then we can go find your father, all right?"

Nanzhi, however, became excited. Three people—they didn’t know how their clothes had become clean, but undoubtedly, the people they were carrying were Zhiyu and the others!

Seeing the little girl about to nod her agreement, she quickly bent down and whispered softly, "Yuanbao, ah, Mom wants to see these three brothers."

The little girl looked at Nanzhi and then at the three men, and after thinking, she shook her head saying, "I don’t want to. I want them to play with me now!"

The three men exchanged looks, confused. These people were still unconscious; how were they supposed to play?

Without getting a response, Yuanbao became a bit unhappy, and with a couple of sniffs, she was about to cry.

The leading man quickly coaxed again, "Alright, alright, they’ll play with you now. Miss, go inside first, and we’ll wake them up to play with you."

Pleased, the little girl nodded her head and then looked towards Nanzhi, seeking approval.

Nanzhi was amused by the little child’s behavior, hesitating before she bent down and kissed her on the cheek.

Yuanbao’s little face instantly flushed with happiness, tightening her grip on Nanzhi’s hand.

She had found her mom!

What the old grandfather said was right—her mom was the best!
