Becoming the Villain's Discarded Wife -
Chapter 115 Their Lives are too Hard!
Chapter 115: Chapter 115 Their Lives are too Hard!
Mother Lin was extremely pleased looking at the two heavily loaded mule carts.
Particularly, seeing the three thick quilts made her want to hug Lin Ercheng in gratitude.
Although it was still warm, it was already September and should cool down any moment. If it came to fleeing due to famine, they wouldn’t survive the winter without warm clothes.
After delivering the water, Nanzhi returned home with her big brother.
The meals at home improved significantly for the next few days, thanks to the dried meat provided by Nanzhi.
Father Lin slurped his lips while looking at the meat porridge on the table.
"Isn’t the food too good? Are we not going to have a life after this?"
Mother Lin just glared at him, scooped another spoon into his bowl and placed it on the table: "Eat quickly, the good days won’t last more than a few days."
Rebuked by his wife, Father Lin could only silently accept his bowl.
Nanzhi ate her porridge, looking out at the horizon.
A few days ago, there was just a black line on the horizon, but now it had turned into a black curtain, covering nearly one-fifth of the sky.
The speed at which it spread had significantly increased in the past two days.
As the sense of ominous feeling strengthened, Nanzhi’s heart sank.
She had the family wear the new shoes to prepare for a possible flight from famine. Wearing comfortable shoes would prevent blisters, and the longer they wore them, the less likely it would attract the coveting eyes due to newness.
The improvement in meals was to strengthen everyone’s spirits as the journey of fleeing would undeniably exhaust many people.
After the meal, Father Lin got busy.
Previously, he had prepared a donkey cart, but felt something was missing. So, with the help his sons, they added a canopy to the cart.
Looking at the canopy he made out of bamboo strips, Father Lin clapped his hands in satisfaction and turned to Nanzhi: "Fatty girl, what do you think of your dad’s handicraft?"
Nanzhi, who’d been lost in her thoughts, nearly fell off the stool at his shout.
Regaining her breath, she finally looked at the mule cart in the yard.
What used to be an open cart, now had a large bamboo mat tied to the frame by her father, transforming it into a makeshift cabin.
He even went into the detail of adding windows on both sides of the cabin.
"Dad, you are so skilled?" Nanzhi admired as she circled the mule cart, the more she watched, the more pleasantly surprised she was.
Her father’s talents were truly numerous!
The mule cart could not only carry items now, but also be a shelter from the wind and rain at night.
"Well, how else would I have won your mother’s hand? Wasn’t it because of these gifted hands?"
Father Lin proudly raised his eyebrows, squinting happily at his skilled hands.
Lin Yicheng coughed lightly on the side and whispered: "Talented hands? Just a big mouth that charmed our mother."
Father Lin’s face turned red as he heard this, he quickly lifted his foot and kicked towards him.
This son of his was useless, he should’ve been abandoned on a mountain long ago.
"Dad, can you add another layer to this cabin?" Nanzhi asked her dad with twinkling eyes.
If an additional layer was added, reinforcing it a bit more, it would be more secure in case something happened.
"Easy peasy." Father Lin responded, continuing the cart modification work.
The whole family was thus preparing energetically at home.
However, chaos descended upon other households in Lihua Village.
They weren’t blind to the patch of blackness in the sky, they just hadn’t paid much attention to it.
But now that it was approaching the village without any signs of rain or wind, they feared the wrath of God, endangering their lives.
And just when everyone was anxious and scared, they received more bad news.
The water pond on the East Mountain had completely dried up.
Aunt Liu was the first to react.
After all, Nanzhi had hinted at this possibility before.
There’s no water on the mountains, and the sky has turned ominously dark. Isn’t it clear that they have to flee?
She recalled Nanzhi’s "predictions" when the earthworms had turned over in a strange manner, and her hesitant demeanor during her last visit.
Aunt Liu figured it all out and hurriedly summoned her three sons to go into town with her.
Better safe than sorry.
The preparations had to be made.
Aunt Guihua was no fool either; sensing something was off, she quickly took her son to town to buy a donkey cart.
Now, other families in the village seemed to awaken to the ominous signs as well.
One after another, they took their silver coins and headed into town to buy provisions.
They all sensed the brewing catastrophe - the darkened sky signaled the anger of the heavens; the water had run dry in the village, so they would have to leave their homes and seek refuge elsewhere.
Even the twenty-odd donkeys that Hu San had found so troublesome were sold out instantly.
Looking at the bright silver coins in his pocket, he was somewhat flummoxed.
How did so many people suddenly decide to buy donkeys?
Shouldn’t they be using their silver coins to buy food at this time?
Looking at the uniformly black sky, even Hu San had a sense something was amiss.
This didn’t look like ordinary dark clouds, did it?
Noticing the sporadic braying of donkeys in the village, Nanzhi found it strange, but it also eased her worries somewhat.
At least this way, if they really had to flee, everyone would be a bit more prepared.
Lin’s father worked at a fast pace, with the help of Lin Yicheng and Lin Ercheng, in a single day they had three mule carts ready.
Lin’s mother, along with Chen Qiulan and Sun Cui, stitched together old pieces of cloth and fixed them at the back of the carts. It worked well for coverage.
The mule carts were now completely finished.
Next came filling the carts with their belongings.
Because Nanzhi’s family had no blankets, Lin’s mother gave her own to her.
Following Lin’s mother’s instructions, they first laid a layer of straw on the flatbed, followed by tightly bound food sacks in the corners, covered with more straw. The large, folded blanket was placed at the front of the cart, to offer a comfortable resting spot for the children and to prevent bumpy rides from causing discomfort.
All the other scattered items were put towards the back of the cart. After pulling down the curtain, everything was neatly hidden from sight.
Observing the fully packed mule cart, Nanzhi reminded everyone not to forget to load their weapons. As she spoke, she placed an axe at the back of the cart. Should anyone harbour malicious intentions, they could reach out from within the cart and grab it in an instant.
Seeing their sister picking up an axe and climbing onto the mule cart, Lin Yicheng and Lin Ercheng exchanged glances and swallowed hard.
Their sister was really unlike other young girls.
With all items packed, they stretched, yawned and all headed home to rest.
However, the dark cloud in the sky seemed to take on a life of its own.
First, it sent out some foggy tendrils, waving them in the air for a bit, as if testing the environment. Finding no danger, it began to expand across the sky.
Observing the dark energy spreading in the sky, River Clam was not amused.
Attempting to cause trouble here was equivalent to challenging him. Was it a death wish?
Just wait, in less than two days, it would put an end to this ghostly apparition!
Doudou’s eyes, bulging out of the two old hens, welled up with tears.
Seeing the white figure laughing heartily on the roof, they instinctively huddled closer together.
Their lives were too bitter!
