Becoming the Villain's Discarded Wife -
Chapter 110 Old Acquaintance
Chapter 110: Chapter 110 Old Acquaintance
With these fifty-plus taels of silver, Nanzhi felt a lot more grounded.
Before, she might have felt bad about using Shen Wenchen’s silver, but now that the two of them had cleared the air, she felt no burden using her husband’s silver.
With ten taels of silver tucked into her bosom, Nanzhi finally stepped out of her room.
Considering the three young children at home, they eventually decided to leave their father at home.
Watching the excited group leaving, he harrumphed before sinking back into his chair.
What was all that about? If he’d known they weren’t going to bring him along, would he have bothered getting dressed?
Such needless excitement.
Remembering his wife’s promise to bring back some pastries for him, he hunkered down in the chair with a few more grunts.
He’d watch the kids. After all, they were his grandchildren and grandnephews.
Seeing her mother and two sisters-in-law in tattered clothes, their faces even smeared with some dust, Nanzhi grabbed a handful of mud from the ground and as she rubbed it onto her own face, she asked, "Mother, is it okay not to bring father to the town?"
Mother Lin didn’t look at her, just smiled and said, "What’s so bad about it? Your father is just greedy for food, as long as we bring him back some pastries, he’s easy to appease."
Thinking of her husband’s character, Mother Lin’s smile deepened a bit.
Nanzhi understood.
So father was easy to appease.
"Your elder sister-in-law used to raise donkeys at home, she knows how to pick. Your second sister-in-law is good at bargaining. Let’s see if we can further bring down the price."
As Mother Lin spoke, she proudly gestured towards her two daughters-in-law.
Her daughters-in-law were all competent!
Nanzhi didn’t know about her sisters-in-law, but after hearing her mother’s words, she nodded.
Upon hearing her mother-in-law speak highly of her, Sun Cui couldn’t help but blush. Lin Ercheng saw his wife’s reddening ears and wrapped his arm around her.
Looking at his younger brother and sister-in-law, Lin Yicheng felt a little envious. He tried to hug Chen Qiulan, but she pushed him away.
"What are you doing? It’s so hot."
Chen Qiulan rolled her eyes and leaned against her mother-in-law.
Why did he have to stick to her in this heat?
Lin Yicheng sighed and followed once more.
The party of six arrived at the town amid laughter and chatter.
Compared to before, the town was less crowded now, and even the peddlers who had set up their stalls by the roadside were nowhere to be found.
"Mother."
Nanzhi called out in a low voice, somewhat worried by the sight of the town.
"No worries, let’s head for South Market. There are Yahang merchants there. With our silver, there’s no fear that we won’t be able to buy a donkey." Mother Lin spoke, leading them towards Yahang.
Due to the severe drought this year, there were very few people coming to buy livestock. Seeing the blank spaces in his ledger, Hu San felt anxious.
It was at this moment that Mother Lin led Nanzhi and the others into the yard.
"Madam, are you here to buy livestock?" Seeing potential business walk in, Hu San quickly put away his worried expression and put on his signature smile.
"We want to buy a donkey. Not sure if you have any." Mother Lin said, scrutinising Hu San.
The man before her was in his twenties, a little dark-skinned but with a decent face.
"Yes, yes." Hu San nodded, also pondering whether this deal could be made.
The leading woman looked to be in her mid-forties. Though dressed in tattered clothes, she didn’t appear to be starving.
When he tried to look at the others behind her, his view was blocked by two men.
Lin Yicheng and Lin Ercheng stood with their arms crossed, their faces fierce. Hu San could only laugh awkwardly and averted his gaze.
Shielded behind the others, Nanzhi felt a pang of familiarity with the man, but couldn’t place exactly who he was. She had no choice but to follow her brothers.
When they reached the stable filled with animals, Hu San finally spoke, "Auntie, all our donkeys are here. Take a look and see if any catch your eye. I assure you, we have the best deals in the entire town."
Mother Lin glanced around the animal stables, then nodded and asked her two sons and Chen Qiulan to choose a donkey. Meanwhile, she began discussing the price with Hu San.
Having run at a loss for two months, and with the animal feed expensing on every corner, Hu San was desperate to sell. He felt reassured at hearing that the woman in front of him wanted to buy two donkeys.
About two months ago, Hu San relied on his connections to join Yahang and had emptied his savings to buy around twenty donkeys. He sold sixteen at the start and made some silver. A month ago, an old man came to him, saying he couldn’t make ends meet and wanted to sell his donkey for grain. Hu San, thinking the donkey was rather good, bought it.
Thereafter, many people approached him one after another, and out of greed, he bought all their donkeys while the price was low.
He had bought the donkeys, but there had been no rain, and the crops in the fields had all died off. People struggled to eat, let alone buy livestock from him.
There were people who came by occasionally to look, but as of now, he still had around twenty donkeys in his stable!
The cost of the feed alone nearly offset the initial low price benefits he had gained.
If he could sell just two donkeys today, it would be a good opportunity to recoup some of his losses.
"Auntie, you can count on it, the donkeys here are the best! If you really want to buy them, I’ll give you this price," Hu San, while speaking, held up three fingers.
He had bought this batch of donkeys for one tael of silver and five hundred wen each. So even if she haggled and they agreed on a final price of two tael of silver and six hundred wen, accounting for the feed cost, he could still make a net profit of eight hundred wen per donkey.
Mother Lin, though, shook her head, looking towards Sun Cui on the side.
Understanding this, Hu San knew that his next negotiations had to be with Sun Cui.
Chen Qiulan examined each tethered donkey one by one, Lin Yicheng and Lin Ercheng trailing behind her, while Nanzhi’s attention was caught by a "donkey" in the corner.
This donkey was a bit different from the others, it seemed taller and more robust. It was shut in a small compartment, its gaze fixed on Nanzhi.
After locking eyes for a while, Nanzhi felt as if the donkey was beckoning her over.
She took two steps forward and the donkey nodded. Nanzhi found this rather magical and took two more steps toward it.
The donkey snorted excitedly from its nostrils. It wasn’t until Nanzhi was standing right in front of the stable that it let out a bray.
This commotion drew the attention from everyone, and they all turned to look.
Nanzhi gave an awkward smile. Only when they all went back to their own businesses did she let out a sigh of relief.
She thought this donkey seemed familiar initially. When it brayed just now, she remembered.
Isn’t this the donkey that pulled her in the dream?
After Chen Qiulan had gone a full round round the donkeys, she chose the best two and finally settled down.
"Mother, I’ve made my choice, those two," As Chen Qiulan spoke, she pointed in the direction of the two chosen donkeys.
"Alright, we’ll take those two," Mother Lin responded in agreement, looking towards Hu San.
They had already negotiated the price.
Two teal of silver and four hundred wen per donkey.
Hu San was smiling on the outside, but feeling bitter on the inside.
That was a loss of four hundred wen per donkey!
Just as they were about to make the payment, Nanzhi called out, "Mother, I want this one!"Hu San followed her gaze, his heart sinking.
That one was a mule and it had cost him two tael of silver just to buy it!
Taking another look at the woman who had just spoken, Hu San’s face turned stiff, she was an "old acquaintance".
Nanzhi, however, stepped forward: "Mother, I want to buy that one!"
That was the "donkey" that had shared her hardships!
