Chapter 145: [The Corpse Collector] (21)

Silvanus and the others ran away from the large bonfire, searching for any trace of Ciel in the darkness.

It was nighttime, and Ciel had just left his spot—yet Silvanus couldn’t see or hear a single sound from him, even though he had been shouting so loudly.

For some reason, Silvanus suddenly came to a halt. He turned his head to look back. Behind him, the bonfire still burned fiercely, casting a blinding light in the pitch-black night, bringing long-lost warmth to this desolate village.

The villagers were still devouring food ravenously. Even from afar, one could see the crazed joy on their faces, as if this was the happiest moment of their lives.

[Maybe Silvanus feels the same way I am—that this scene is grotesque and bizarre...]

[Silvanus isn’t as cowardly as some people, though, ha ha ha.]

[Even though the villagers seem pitiful right now, thinking about what they did in the past to that family makes it hard to feel much sympathy.]

[But the children are innocent, right? No one in this situation is genuinely in the right.]

[Sorry, but Bryan does have reasons and motives for revenge.]

[It’s all just a scripted performance—who knows, maybe once this dungeon ends, the two sides of monsters will gather and celebrate together. Are there really people who believe in the tragedy of these so-called monsters? Don’t be so laughably naive, ha ha ha.]

On the other side, the villagers kept gnawing at the meat in their hands, completely unaware that the meat was changing. Eventually, it turned into rotting bones with bits of flesh clinging to them.

They kept licking and sucking, their faces blissful, as they gleefully devoured the rotten meat and the worms inside.

It was as if no one noticed the putrid, nauseating stench in the air.

"Ha ha ha, so delicious, so delicious!"

"So tasty!"

They all laughed maniacally, mouths chewing and swallowing nonstop.

At that moment, the unbearable heat suddenly awakened a few of them. Their noses twitched, and they glanced at the meat in their hands.

The black, decaying meat was crawling with fat white maggots.

As if sensing their gaze, the large maggots abruptly stopped moving, then "turned" to look at the humans. Horrifyingly, the maggots had human faces!

Even though the faces were tiny, they were detailed—and shockingly, every one of them resembled someone from the village!

"Aaaaaaaa!"

A shrill scream pierced the night as if it could shake the entire village. Even the black crows in the forest were startled by the noise.

One person screamed, then two—soon, all of them were screaming as though facing something unimaginably terrifying. The cries echoed again and again, mixed with constant cursing and the frantic wailing of children.

The villagers descended into chaos, throwing the rotting meat everywhere.

Only now did they realize what had awakened them—the heat. All of them were standing in a sea of fire.

Fire! At some point, the raging flames had surrounded them without their noticing. Beneath their feet, the ground was glowing red with embers. Towering flames blazed upward, lighting the sky above them in crimson.

And the moment the villagers realized this, the searing flames immediately began to consume them.

"Aaaaa, it’s too hot, it hurts, help!"

"Help me! Please help me!"

"This isn’t me, I’m not a monster—what the hell is this?!"

What greeted their eyes were the mutated forms of their own family members. They all had transformed into fat, pale-white maggots with segmented bodies, writhing and squirming about. Black fluid oozed from their mouths. The heat of the flames caused their bodies to swell and blister, bubbles forming across their skin, then bursting with a hiss as yellowish pus sprayed outward.

The sight instantly twisted the villagers’ faces in horror. Their skin turned deathly pale, and some even died of fright before the fire could reach them.

And now, there were no longer any people left in the place where the villagers had once gathered—only the bonfire, roaring ever more fiercely, its flames rising at a terrifying speed.

The fire had now reached over three meters in height and rapidly spread outward.

Silvanus felt as though the world in front of him was shifting and warping. Bursts of fireworks exploded before his eyes. The water rose up from beneath his feet, gradually submerging him.

The fireworks kept bursting in his vision. The withered trees in the forest began to soften and melt into the ground like scoops of ice cream under the sun.

Even the earth beneath him seemed to turn soft, swelling, and rippling like waves.

The blazing fire continued to spread, racing toward him. It flowed over the water’s surface in elegant, sinuous movements, like a beautiful dance.

Why is fire burning on water like this... Silvanus thought vaguely.

"Return!"

At that moment, a thunderous voice rang out so loud it felt like it would tear Silvanus’s eardrums apart. Someone grabbed his hand—gripped it so tightly it felt like his bones might shatter. He actually heard the crack of something giving way.

But the pain also brought Silvanus a sliver of clarity.

Someone was dragging him—dragging him to run, fast—but the immense resistance from the water beneath them felt like it would rip his body apart.

He blinked rapidly, over and over, yet the world remained hazy before his eyes as if veiled by a thick fog. He could only see countless bright sparks, like fireworks. His entire world seemed to be exploding, becoming nothing but fireworks.

The ridiculous scene and the overwhelming density of explosions made it hard for Silvanus to breathe.

He opened his mouth to gasp for air, cold sweat drenching the sides of his hair, trickling down his handsome face.

His entire face was flushed red, his eyes dazed. Then, suddenly, the corners of his lips curled upward. Two streams of blood flowed from his nose, dripping down his chin, falling in thick drops to the ground.

Silvanus parted his lips, licking the blood that had run across them. A crazed smile bloomed on his face, his green eyes glowing with gold.

"I see... I see it... I saw it..."

He murmured suddenly.

[Light a candle for our fallen comrade... or maybe that wild sister from above.]

[Whoa, calm down! It’s not that serious! I swear I didn’t even take my pants off!]

[Nope, I’m taking Silvanus back to my cave! Even if I’m a female, I’ll bear the duty of raising my pack!]

[Yet another multi-species war breaking out in the comments...]

[Seriously though, didn’t anyone wonder what Silvanus actually saw? Can you all stop thinking with your lower halves and focus for once?]

[Let me confess right now: Silvanus saw the terrifying, colossal black dragon hidden in my pants.]

[Big talk. How many centimeters is that exactly?]

[Too scared to say it out loud, huh? Someone might get offended.]

Silvanus might have sighed that no one had ever taken things seriously here if he had been conscious enough to read the comments.

But right now, Silvanus was no longer in any condition to read anything. After mumbling to himself, his body suddenly collapsed, going limp. Blood kept dripping from his nose—only he knew what it was that he had seen.

Silas quickly caught his falling body.

Placing a hand over Silvanus’s nose, he felt the hot, fresh blood seeping into his palm, and his expression darkened.

Without hesitation, he carried Silvanus out of the lake. Like a multitude of giant hands with immense strength, the water kept trying to drag Silas back, but they had no effect on him.

He swiftly exited the lake. Behind him, the villagers were charging toward the water, flames clinging to their backs.

They were entirely out of their minds, beyond saving.

The raging fire devoured the surface of the lake, spread into the forest, and engulfed the entire village. By morning, there might be nothing left but ashes.

Silvanus only felt an intense heat in his body. The blinding light was so intense he couldn’t open his eyes.

He squinted, trying to blink. Reflexive tears welled up from the stinging. Then, a voice—faint and unpleasant—reached his ears.

"A newborn god, so weak and fragile... I could crush you with just one hand!"

A bright, arrogant voice rang out as if it belonged to the most powerful being in existence—peerless, unmatched under heaven.

Silvanus couldn’t help but think: What an arrogant and idiotic creature.

He blinked again. His vision was blurred with tears, but through the haze, he could vaguely make out a blinding red glow and magnificent golden wings unfurling in the light.

The figure approached the vast wings, partially blocking the glare, allowing Silvanus to open his eyes more.

Crimson hair and eyes like blazing fire... and that familiar mocking smile. Silvanus could clearly see his own reflection in those eyes.

His face still round and soft, babyish.

Three small pairs of wings sprouted from the back of his neck, half-hidden beneath golden hair brighter than the sun. His large emerald eyes shimmered with watery light, so adorable it hurt.

"Wanna come to hell with me, little godling?"
