Chapter 141: [The Corpse Collector] (17)

Silvanus strolled beneath the lake, calm and composed as if taking a stroll in his home.

The surface above was still and silent. He had been walking for a while but hadn’t seen anything. That shouldn’t have been the case—Ciel had seen the monster the moment he entered the water just the day before.

Just as that thought crossed Silvanus’s mind, a faint sound of water being disturbed suddenly echoed through the silence. His ears twitched slightly. He stopped in place, sensing a chill behind him. It was near—very near.

He could feel the danger closing in. This was different from Ciel’s encounter. This time, the monster wasn’t playing around.

"Whoosh!" A sharp sound tore through the water. Despite being underwater, the monster moved effortlessly.

Silvanus turned his head coldly, dodging the monster’s attack. At the same time, he finally got a clear look at the creature’s face.

It was precisely as Ciel had described. Ugly and grotesque—a small body with an enormous head covered in lesions that looked like jagged little mountains, constantly oozing foul red-black mucus.

Its gaping mouth was filled with shark-like teeth as it lunged at Silvanus. Its exposed intestines, squirming like living things, shot out toward him, trying to wrap around him.

Honestly, even the way this thing attacked was disturbingly disgusting to Silvanus.

He raised his hand, and the water before him twisted violently around the monster, forming a sphere that trapped the creature inside.

The writhing monster suddenly stiffened like it had been thrown into a vacuum. Its hollow eye sockets began oozing black sludge, and its wide-open mouth looked like it was screaming—yet no sound could escape the watery membrane surrounding it.

Silvanus lifted a finger, and the monster’s body floated up and followed him obediently. Its mouth moved nonstop, but not a single sound made it out.

The moment Silvanus surfaced, a loud, piercing scream echoed from the depths of the lake—like a furious woman wailing in rage.

But really, what did that have to do with him?

Right now, he’d just fished up a corpse.

Honestly, as long as his teammates didn’t notice anything unusual, this mission was much easier than he’d imagined.

Of course, there was still the matter of the strange appearances by Ryan, Lucian, and... Silas.

Silvanus suddenly widened his eyes and warily looked to his right.

When he saw someone lunging toward him, he finally loosened the fists he hadn’t realized were clenched.

"Thud!"

Silvanus’s body hit the ground hard. Silas threw his arms around him tightly, with a strength that felt like it could crush him.

Silas’s bright red eyes trembled uncontrollably. At this point, not only were his irises blood-red—his entire sclera was now webbed with crimson veins.

Silvanus grabbed a fistful of Silas’s hair and yanked his head back sharply, not caring whether it hurt.

"What the hell are you doing? It’s not time for you to gouge my eyes out yet."

Silas said nothing.

That’s right—only he was allowed to gouge out Silvanus’s eyes. Those beautiful eyes should’ve belonged to him, not be crushed by something hideous and foul!

Silas murmured, "I thought you had drowned."

At first, Silas believed he’d be able to find Silvanus easily. But he couldn’t see a thing—Silvanus seemed to have been pulled into another dimension entirely.

Silas thought he’d feel satisfied if Silvanus disappeared along with that flawless face.

But instead, all he felt was unbearable frustration.

That was when he realized just how deep his jealousy toward Silvanus ran. So deep that he wouldn’t be satisfied until he had everything Silvanus possessed.

"You deliberately pushed me into the water and still have the nerve to talk like that?" Silvanus sneered, kicking Silas away without holding back.

He kicked hard—Silas was sent flying, landing on the ground, clutching his stomach. He didn’t make a sound, just stared intently at Silvanus.

Silvanus only had to meet Silas’s gaze to know precisely what was going through his mind, which puzzled him a bit.

It wasn’t like Silas was bad-looking. He had a handsome face, and his albinism only made him look colder and more mysterious. Out in the world, he would no doubt be chased after by plenty of people. And yet he harbored such jealousy toward him, to the point of wanting to rip out his eyes.

Silvanus found it a little strange. He admitted he was remarkable but didn’t think Silas’s jealousy should run this deep. So there were only two possibilities: either Silas had something seriously wrong with his head, or there was something off about the jealousy itself—and its target.

Maybe even if his eyes were golden or blue or his hair were black or red, Silas would still be envious of him. It felt less like normal jealousy and more like a pre-programmed instinct.

Of course, that was just Silvanus’s speculation. Once they left this place, he wouldn’t see Silas ever again. So he didn’t dwell on it. Better to finish the mission quickly.

With a flick of his hand, the monster’s body—still stiff from the water membrane—was thrown toward Silas.

Silas caught it instinctively. His expression remained blank as he stared into the creature’s hollow eye sockets. He just looked at Silvanus, silently questioning him.

"This is one of the corpses I need to retrieve. Just toss it at your place."

Silvanus knew that the monsters still hadn’t knocked on Silas’s door.

Silas said nothing. Silvanus didn’t speak to him further either and headed toward the village.

Only now did he realize the sky had gone from gloomy to pitch dark—it was almost nightfall. And when he saw the firelight flickering from the village, he was sure of it. He’d been underwater from morning till night! Yet it had only felt like a short while!

At that moment, a large bonfire was blazing in the village center.

Thick logs had been stacked into the shape of a pointed tent. As soon as the fire was lit, flames roared to life like they had been doused in oil.

Villagers stood hand in hand around the fire, singing nonstop. Their humming voices sounded like a swarm of bees whispering, a droning headache-inducing noise.

Silvanus furrowed his brow. Something had happened in this village—something big enough to make these half-dead villagers celebrate like this?

"Well, look who finally came back. I never knew you were so hardworking. Can’t even swim—what were you doing near the lake in the first place?!"

Lucian’s mocking voice rang out. Silvanus looked over and saw him standing off to the side, far from the villagers, arms crossed and glaring at him with a prideful and angry gaze. Silvanus swore he hadn’t done anything to deserve that attitude. Truly, a hard man to figure out.

"Why did you come back so late? We were all worried about you!" Ryan said, rushing over to grab Silvanus’s hand.
