Chapter 544: Chapter 497 Departure
"Qiao Sang is really making something of herself, eh? Only in her first year of high school and she already has three high-level pet beasts. Unlike your cousin, who only had his pet beast evolve to mid-level by his senior year."
"No kidding, I still remember holding you as a child, and now, just like that, you’ve grown up so much."
"I always said when I was watching TV back then, ’How come this kid looks so much like Qiao Sang?’ It turns out they were the same person. If it weren’t for your mother putting on this banquet, I wouldn’t have known."
"Champion of the National School Beast Taming League, and that’s in the senior division. Doesn’t that mean you’re the most powerful in the whole country among high schoolers?"
"I heard you’re going to Chao Su Star to become an intergalactic exchange student. What’s that school called, is it better than Shengshui Middle School?"
"Ever since you were little I knew you’d grow up to be successful, and look, you really have become someone."
The people around her chatted, each saying their piece.
Qiao Sang collected the red envelopes, maintaining a polite smile.
Actually, apart from her Third Aunt and Uncle, she had to search her memory for a good while to remember who the rest of the relatives were.
The relationship with relatives is quite a peculiar thing; you might not see each other all year round, but when you do, everyone acts as if they’re very familiar.
As long as someone in the family achieves fame, even the most distant relative couldn’t get distant enough to stop mentioning to others "my family’s so-and-so is that one," thereby basking in reflected glory.
Several waiters kept bustling to and fro, continuously bringing dishes and drinks to the tables.
As they served, they couldn’t help but sneak glances at the center of attention, wanting to see for themselves what the person who the hall-full of reporters wanted to interview was really like.
Unfortunately, the person of interest was surrounded by a throng of attentive people, and nothing could be seen.
As time went by, the guests eventually settled down in their seats.
Ye Xiangting, holding a wine glass, went from relative to relative for toasts and pleasantries.
From the grin she couldn’t suppress, it was obvious she was genuinely happy.
Qiao Sang hugged Yaobao and ate her meal.
A cousin sitting nearby asked, "Aren’t you going to put your Liaoxing Dog back into the Beast Taming Codex?"
"Yaobao!"
Yaobao turned its head to look at the speaking human and bared its teeth.
At that, the cousin stiffened up and rose to her feet, saying, "I’m going to use the restroom."
After speaking, she picked up her phone and scurried away.
Qiao Sang: "..."
"Don’t scare people," Qiao Sang said as she rubbed Yaobao’s head.
"Yaobao..."
Yaobao pouted.
It was just showing its teeth...
"Qiao Sang." At that moment, an elderly voice called out from behind.
Qiao Sang turned around and paused for a moment before standing up and calling out, "Grandma."
The relatives who were chatting at the table suddenly fell silent.
As the most accomplished child in the Ye family by now, even the distant relatives knew about the issues in Qiao Sang’s home.
Those eating and drinking were all from the Ye family, making the presence of anyone from the Qiao family suddenly turn the atmosphere inexplicably awkward.
The elderly lady with graying hair stared intently at her granddaughter, looking somewhat nervous.
"Can we talk over there?" the old lady asked.
Qiao Sang glanced in the direction of her mother.
She knew that if her mother hadn’t informed her, Grandma wouldn’t have known to come here.
"Sure," Qiao Sang nodded.
The two moved to the side, by the floor-to-ceiling window.
The eyes of those around followed them, but no one approached to disturb them.
"This is the Liaoxing Dog, isn’t it?" the old lady said with a smile as she petted Yaobao’s head. "It’s really good-looking."
"Yaobao."
Yaobao closed its eyes, enjoying the attention.
After a moment of petting, the old lady looked up and took a red envelope out of her bag, handing it over awkwardly, "I heard from your mom that you’re going to Chao Su Star. Here, take this. There’s 50,000 in here, the pin is your birthday."
Qiao Sang didn’t take it, calmly saying, "It’s not necessary, my mom gives me enough money."
To be honest, as a mature adult deep down, she really had no hard feelings toward her grandmother.
But perhaps due to leaning toward her mother, or maybe because Grandma hadn’t been around much during her upbringing, she genuinely couldn’t feel close to her.
In her previous life, her parents were divorced. As a child, she might have held out hope, but as she grew up, she got used to days without a father, without a grandmother.
Without the people from her father’s side, she still led a good life.
The old lady’s body stiffened, her expression turned a bit wistful, and after a brief silence of two or three seconds, she asked, "Did you block your dad?"
Qiao Sang replied, "Probably, I’ve been getting contact from people who never used to reach out to me, so I blocked any numbers I didn’t recognize."
The old lady’s body stiffened once more.
